On Sean Payton, Dolphins called assistant G.M. Jeff Ireland, who said “don’t bother”

Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2022, 7:56 PM EST

Monday’s news that the Dolphins planned to pursue a package deal of Sean Payton and Tom Brady included a report, based on Dolphins sources, that Miami had actually called the Saints to seek permission to speak to Payton about becoming coach of the team, and that the Saints declined.

Per multiple league sources, the call wasn’t made to Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis or to team owner Gayle Benson. The Dolphins called Saints assistant G.M. Jeff Ireland, who previously served as the Miami General Manager. According to a Dolphins source, Ireland said he spoke to Loomis, and Ireland told the Dolphins, “Don’t bother.”

So why wouldn’t the Saints accept value for a coach who has left New Orleans and won’t return? It’s still not clear. The Dolphins, we’re told, developed the impression that the Saints weren’t comfortable with the optics of Payton leaving New Orleans and heading straight for Miami.

It’s unknown whether the Saints realized that the Dolphins intended to pursue Brady to play quarterback. (As explained Monday, Dolphins sources say only that the team has had internal discussions about Brady becoming a minority owner.) Regardless, Miami inquired about Payton, New Orleans (through Ireland) said no, and the Dolphins eventually hired Mike McDaniel to coach the team.

Whether the Saints say “yes” or “no” if/when a team calls in 2023 remains to be seen. At some point, however, New Orleans should welcome the opportunity to secure compensation for Payton, given that Payton has closed that chapter of his life and moved on.

Kliff deserved a 4 year extension ? Why? For taking one of the most talented rosters in the NFL to the post season for a blowout loss. Well done mate.

49ers hire Brian Griese as quarterbacks coach

Posted by Charean Williams on March 4, 2022, 7:46 PM EST

ESPN’s hiring of Troy Aikman as its Monday Night Football analyst means new jobs for Brian Griese and Louis Riddick after two seasons in the booth. Riddick interviewed for the Steelers’ General Manager job this week.

Griese already has found a job working in the NFL.

ESPN reports the 49ers have hired Griese as their quarterbacks coach. He replaces Rich Scangarello, who left to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky.

Griese has a long relationship with Kyle Shanahan, who was on the Bucs’ coaching staff when Griese played there. Griese played for the Broncos when Shanahan’s father, Mike, was the head coach. Griese’s rookie season of 1998 was John Elway’s final season.

Griese has never coached on any level.

He joined ESPN in 2009, the year after his NFL playing career ended.

Rams are expected to hire Ra’Shaad Samples as RBs coach

Posted by Myles Simmons on March 4, 2022, 10:06 AM EST

It looks like the Rams have found a new running backs coach.

According to multiple reports, Los Angeles is expected to hire Ra’Shaad Samples for the position.

Samples, 27, had been hired in November to be TC’s assistant head coach and running backs coach under new head coach Sonny Dykes. He spent the 2019-2021 seasons with SMU, rising from an offensive assistant to running backs coach and assistant head coach.

The Rams had a vacancy at RBs coach after promoting Thomas Brown to tight ends coach. Brown replaced Wes Phillips in that role, as Phillips left the organization to become the Vikings’ offensive coordinator under former Rams OC Kevin O’Connell.

L.A. head coach Sean McVay had said that Brown was heading the search for a new running backs coach.

Thomas Brown taking over as Rams TEs coach

After winning Super Bowl LVI, the Rams have made several shifts on their coaching staff after several assistants have moved on to other jobs.

Assistant head coach/running backs coach Thomas Brown has been promoted to tight ends coach, head coach Sean McVay said in a video conference on Wednesday. Brown replaces Wes Phillips in coaching tight ends, as Phillips left the organization to become Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. Brown will also lead the search for a new running backs coach.

McVay also said that Chris Beake will be Los Angeles’ inside linebackers coach, Skyler Jones will serve as assistant defensive line coach, and Jeremy Springer will be an assistant special teams coach.

As previously reported, Liam Coen was announced as the Rams’ new offensive coordinator. Jake Peetz and Greg Olson are also joining L.A. as offensive assistants.

The Rams lost six assistants from their 2021 staff — most prominently offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who is now the Vikings’ head coach.

Lions hire Cameron Davis as assistant defensive line coach

The Lions have added a coach to Dan Campbell’s staff.

Cameron Davis is going to be the team’s assistant defensive line coach for the 2022 season. The National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches announced the move.

Davis spent the last two seasons as the defensive line coach at Lamar. He previously worked at Kentucky, Rice, and Texas A&M. Davis also interned in the Raiders public relations department before getting into coaching.

Todd Wash returns for a second season as the Lions’ defensive line coach. The team did make other changes to the defensive staff with Kelvin Sheppard moving to work with inside linebackers and Dave Corrao taking over his former role as the outside linebackers coach.

49ers hire Brian Schneider as special teams coordinator, won’t have OC in 2022

Posted by Myles Simmons on March 7, 2022, 5:16 PM EST

After several coaching departures following an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers have formally announced their staffing changes for the 2022 season.

Among the revelations in San Francisco’s release are that Brian Schneider has been hired as the club’s special teams coordinator. And the 49ers won’t have a named offensive coordinator after Mike McDaniel left the club to be the Dolphins’ head coach.

Schneider was the Seahawks special teams coordinator from 2010-2020 and held the same position with the Jaguars from January to May of last year before stepping away from the team for personal reasons.

Because 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan calls the offensive plays, he is the team’s de facto coordinator for that unit. But offensive line coach Chris Foerster has added run game coordinator to his offensive line coach duties. And Bobby Slowik has been promoted to offensive passing game coordinator. He was previously an offensive passing game specialist.

The 49ers also formally announced that Anthony Lynn is the team’s new assistant head coach/running backs coach and Brian Griese will coach quarterbacks.
Brian Fleury is the tight ends coach, Leonard Hankerson is the receivers coach, Klay Kubiak is the assistant QBs coach, Joe Graves is the assistant OL coach, Stephen Adegoke is a defensive quality control coach, Asauni Rufus is an offensive quality control coach, Deuce Schwartz is an offensive quality control coach, and Nick Sorensen is a defensive assistant.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, Hard Rock recognized Ridley’s name and contacted Genius Sports Group, which oversees betting integrity for the NFL. The compliance company notified the NFL, which then began an investigation.

The NFL informed the Falcons of the investigation on Feb. 9.

Vikings part ways with longtime head trainer Eric Sugarman

Posted by Josh Alper on March 8, 2022, 6:56 AM EST

The changes to the Vikings this offseason will extend to the top of their training department.

Head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman is out after 16 years as the team reshapes itself around new General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell. Sugarman was hired when Brad Childress was the team’s head coach in 2006 and he remained on hand through the tenures of Leslie Frazier and Mike Zimmer.

“I am tremendously grateful to the Vikings and the Wilf family for the opportunity to spend 16 years in Minnesota and am proud of our collective efforts to keep players healthy and at their peak performance during that time,” Sugarman said in a statement, via Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “With the added role of infection control officer over the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, I took very seriously the responsibility of extending that same level of care to all Vikings staff members.”

The changes to the Vikings will continue with the start of free agency next week and the roster renovations may match the off-field ones as the Vikings kick off a new chapter in their history.

Vikings hire Tyler Williams as executive director of player health and performance

Posted by Josh Alper on March 9, 2022, 6:01 PM EST

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell looked to his previous team to find a new person to head up the team’s training staff.

The team announced the hiring of Tyler Williams as their executive director of player health and performance on Wednesday. Williams spent the last 15 seasons with the Rams, where O’Connell was the offensive coordinator, and was their director of sports science and an assistant athletic trainer in 2021.

“Tyler led the cutting-edge sports science efforts with the Rams that played a huge role in the success there,” O’Connell said in a statement. “He is extremely bright and a great leader. I’m excited about the positive impact he will make for the Minnesota Vikings.”

Eric Sugarman had been the team’s head trainer for 16 seasons before being let go earlier this week.

The Vikings also announced that they have hired Grant Udinski as assistant to the head coach/special projects. He was a coaching assistant with the Panthers the last two years.

Report: Commanders sign Scott Turner to multi-year extension

Posted by Charean Williams on March 13, 2022, 9:34 PM EDT

The Commanders are keeping their offensive coordinator long term.

The team and Scott Turner agreed to a contract extension Sunday, J.P. Finlay of NBCSportsWashington.com reports. Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post adds that it’s a three-year contract through the 2024 season.

Turner, 39, gets his seventh starting quarterback since he joined Washington in 2020. The Commanders agreed to a trade with the Colts for Carson Wentz. Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen started for the team at quarterback in 2020 and Taylor Heinicke, Ryan Fitpatrick and Garrett Gilbert were starters in 2021.

Turner, the son of Norv Turner, began his NFL coaching career in 2011 with Carolina as an offensive quality control coach. He coached the Browns receivers in 2013, the Vikings quarterbacks in 2014-16 and the Panthers quarterbacks in 2018-19 before going to Washington.

Bills hired Mike Shula as a senior offensive assistant.

Shula continues to bounce around the league after serving as Carolina's offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2017. He was most recently the Broncos' quarterbacks coach. With Buffalo, he'll have a hand in shaping one of the NFL's most explosive offenses.

Four teams propose delaying certain front-office hirings until after the draft

Posted by Mike Florio on March 16, 2022, 10:44 PM EDT

At a time when some want to delay the hiring of coaches until after the Super Bowl, four teams have proposed delaying the hiring of some front-office personnel until after the draft.

The Ravens, Bills, Eagles, and Buccaneers have proposed an amendment to the tampering policy that allows teams to decline permission for so-called “Secondary Football Executive” positions (e.g., assistant G.M.) until the draft has come and gone. After the draft and through June 30, the employer club would be required to grant permission for another club to interview and hire a non-high-level executive or non-secondary football executive for a secondary football executive position.

In the formal proposal, the teams that submitted it explain that it will allow “the employer club the choice to retain its player personnel staff” through the draft, and that after the draft “the employer club is required to grant permission for another club to interview and hire a non-high-level executive or non-secondary football executive for a secondary football executive position.”

The goal is to strike the balance between promoting opportunities and ensuring competitive integrity, given that employees who take jobs with new teams in January or February take with them a significant amount of institutional knowledge as to free agency and the draft.

Along with the various proposals to revise overtime, these are the only new rules proposed by any of the NFL’s teams in advance of the league meetings to be held later this month. The Competition Committee likely will have other proposals for ownership.
