Without being nasty, how does a 23 year old go straight from a country league straight to the AFL , bit of a slap in the face to those guys dominating the state leagues ,
Isaac Smith had quite the similar pathway IIRC - just two late VFL games prior to being drafted

Bulldogs almost rookied Anthony Scott straight from the Ammos - took him in the Footscray program then took him as a rookie one year later.

It's rare but it happens.

Scott Thompson spent a few games at Geelong VFL, but was mainly South Barwon.

Tom Stewart was similar.

TBH most of the major Vic local leagues are in line with the NT league in quality, people wouldn’t bat an eyelid if a 22 year old small forward was picked out of St Mary’s

Stewart played most of the season in vfl, think he may have placed in the b&f

Michael Barlow had 1 season at Werribee after dominating the GVFL for Shepp United.

St Kilda we’re going to draft him straight out of the GVFL with their last pick as Ross Lyon wanted him and Barlow was already training there, but it was the offseason where Gehrig came out of retirement days before the draft and gobbled up the last list spot.

He spent the year at Werribee and ended up at Freo with Lyon the year after.

David Teague went from the Ovens and Murray.

To even be in the frame through this particular pathway you need to be an elite self-motivator. AFL clubs consider that a great quality to have.

Also, he dominated playing for the premiers in one of the strongest country leagues in Australia. He has an extended highlight video on YouTube and it's worth watching. I think he can be a player at the top level.

I’d say 90% chance they want Humphrey
Phillipou could easily be on the board at pick 9 still.
The teams between 4-10 aren’t really more likely to trade back than Essendon are, and there’s a risk someone else might trade up in to one of those picks.

Sitting back and waiting at every pick between 4-9 isn’t a way to get the guaranteed result.

Outside of maybe a swap of 14-10 with St Kilda if they prefer Hewett and don’t think he’ll last to 15 there’s not too many teams looking at moving.

If he’s still on the board at west coasts pick, they would be silly to not do that deal then, if it’s going to land Melbourne the player that you think.

Not sure I can remember a draft that had this much talk around trading picks in the 1st round. I think we should open it up further by letting clubs trade 2 years in advance

Should be like the NBA, and teams can trade players on the night too lol. Would actually make deals so much easier if you could trade more future picks.

The clubs want less restrictions on trading picks.
Reckon it will open up a bit, but will be interesting to see what the AFL decides to do.

Would also create a skill gap, the better trading teams will be noticeable.

Up to clubs to be better run then. I just want to see a team draft a player then trade him 10 mins later!

No reason it can't be the NBA system it's ridiculous that it isn't at the moment it's typical AFL doing something half right. If you want future picks, let the clubs trade them, who cares if they are 2-3-4 years down the track

There was an article about this around trade period (I think maybe by Jake Niall, can't remember), that the clubs want more freedom (eg trade picks from 2 years in advance), but the AFL was more inclined to just allow you to trade more picks from 1 year in advance (ie F1 + other F picks).

It seems it will change but might be more slowly, or more restrictive, than most want

I'm hoping the AFL adopt an NBA style protection rule. Like, for example for future firsts, if adopted could be:

Year 1 top 10 protected
Year 2 top 5 protected
Year 3 unprotected

Nba has a whole lot of rules involved in future picks though. Not as simple as just allowing of trading multiple years into the future.

I'm not fully across the 'protected' rules, but it seems antithetical to Futures trading.
The whole point is risk/reward.

Nah, you get the farcical situation where a player is presented with their new jumper only to be wearing a different one come the end of the night. Didn't some kid get traded mid-interview one year?

They at least should be able to do 2 years. I mean how much quicker would the JHF deal have been? Would have been done in 2 days!

Hey least it's entertaining, if they want to make it go 3 hours least make it fun with live trades everywhere!

Correct, some futures are protected. That is fine and should come in, maybe you protect a top 5 selection.
