Laughable that strugglers like GWS and North who already operate with significant inherent disadvantages to most other clubs for a variety of reasons, would feel pressured into being “good blokes” and not bidding on a player that is already heading to a club that is at the top end of the ladder for a discount and is by fairly solid consensus the best player in the draft.
Wtf is wrong with them? Why shouldn’t they bid on him with pick 1?
GWS, a club that has been r*ped and pillaged for talent from the first moment they existed, suddenly should do a favour to the likes of brisbane or Collingwood?
More Humiliation for them.

If he gets there surely WCE are all over him

Hard to know but wce are in good shape for key backs their midfield is barer. Id assume they would look to take ginbey at 8 and either allan or hewett at 12 but you never know. I do think 7-15 is busslingers range though either a club like us or bulldogs or wce will pick him up.

Probably need a key forward more than a key defender.

I still think there might've been a 'wink wink' agreement between GWS and Brisbane when they made that trade involving Brisbane's pick 15.

If you're GWS, surely you rather make a deal that serves you as opposed to not making a deal and bidding just so it pleases other clubs.

McGovern is hardly a spring chicken though

Not really.

The club might legitimately have had JHF at #1 on their board.

The club might legitimately have Wardlaw at #1 on their board.

Fans get caught up on bidding for the sake of it etc, but I don’t think clubs at all view it that way.

Listen to every recruiter interviewed this week, draft night is quite simple for them, they simply tick off names in order. They’ve already weighted the player rankings for their list needs where applicable.

So if you have a player higher than another, why would you bid?
Yep to all that.

GWS bid on Sam Darcy last year at pick 2 and traded heavily for pick 1 this year to grab Cadman. They obviously rate KPPs at the pointy end as they're harder to get, and weight their order accordingly.

Ticking names off in order is what a few managers have actually admitted happens on draft night.

If they don’t rate him at 1, why on earth bid. Clubs like GWS would have done no work into Ashcroft anyway. They will take Cadman

Yeah I have no issue when teams bid. Who cares if there’s a bid at 4 or a bid at 1, it literally makes zero difference. If I were to guess you’ll bid at 3. Take Wardlaw at 2, then bid. Shezel at 4.
It makes a difference to whether our first pick next year is a second round pick, or a fifth round pick.

GWS don’t need mids as good as Ashcroft is. Cadman at 1, lock it in.
That’s beside the point I was making, and GWS lost 3 mids this trade period, so the idea they don’t need any new ones developing is nonsense.

To a point but they already couldn’t fit these mids in. They will rightfully take the tall

We lost mids because we had too many mids. Replacing them with more mids ... isn't that the definition of folly?

Listen to McCartney's previous words around having a limited range of players to target from the draft pool, and it means that the GWS draft order list will look different to other clubs' lists. We also can't trade in much more than role players, so have to grow everyone in a talent position from the draft. From media reporting, it would therefore not be hard to see them having Aaron Cadman at #1 for the aggregation of all those reasons.

Also, look to our past record. We'll bid where we see someone fits in (list and talent-wise) but not gratuitously. Hence bids on Darcy, Blakey & Quaynor in recent years, but not on Daicos.

I don't know whether GWS will or won't bid, but if not, it will be because we simply have Cadman ahead of Ashcroft.

And the pick swap we did with Brisbane wasn't in our favour IMHO, so I don't think it would have created any degree of quid pro quo.

Probably need a key forward more than a key defender.

They do but honestly theres no key forward worth picking in r1 of this draft imo (besides cadman) so wce might only fill that need with later or rookie picks.

McGovern is hardly a spring chicken though

Barass is signed for 5 or 6 years edwards is young and i rate bazzo who they drafted last year, plus rotham as a 3rd tall and maybe williams. They are ok for kpd stock.

WC should really be taking the best available out of one of the mids that slides, then Hewett with their next pick if still available.

It will be an interesting watch if Allen, Hewett & Busslinger are all there at the 2nd pick. Sliding doors moment for the club, unsure which way they go.

Possibly Gold Coast?

Goldy Give:
F1 ~7
ADE F3 ~44

Get:
14
17

throw in a few later pick swaps?
They’d be better off giving up this years first rounder and they won’t do that. Why would you give up a probably top 10 pick in a very strong 2023 draft for 2 picks Sydney don’t really rate? I can’t see anyone offering next year first rounders for Sydney’s firsts this year.
