Where do you work and are they hiring?

Just think , you could sit round watching Junior footy all year, then at the pointy end you google what Knightmare and Twomey are saying, then choose an appropriate player.

I'd like us to be aggressive & use next years 1st to get another 1st this year.

Reckon we'll have a few on the trade table next year after Ross has had a season to assess them.
I can understand people wanting to be aggressive this year, but we have to weigh up the long term benefits. We will get a good quality midfielder with this years first, so we are are getting to the point where we will have enough mid options. I believe the next key piece in our list build is another top quality key forward.

If there was a key forward worthy of moving up for this year, it might be viable? Some might suggest Jefferson is a top 15 key forward, but I think in any another year with more KPP's he would be top 30 only.

We may get lucky and get Keeler, Lemney or Foster with our 2nd draft pick, who could go on to become the key forward we need? So next years draft we can then look at other options or best available.

Then consider next years draft qualty is looking deeper and more broad ranging, there will be a lot more key forward options.

The other consideration is who are we going to release to get us back into the 1st round? Clark was shopped around this year and although North were interested they werent prepared to give up a top 10 pick for him.

If he has a breakout year as a mid this year, I doubt the club would want to lose him. If he doesnt and gets injured again I can see his trade value dropping significantly.

Yeah you're spot on. I guess I just think that getting bulk of mids makes it more likely you'll end up with a star. Much more so than talls who are notoriously hard to pick at junior level.
I think you will find we drafted 3 x last year in Windhager, Owens & Wanganeen-Milera. Add McKenzie/Phillipou/Ginbey this year and we are looking pretty good.

He is a mid, but he is not as good as the others. WC only pick him if they are worried about the "go home" risk of the others. That means they accept a quality hit up front. W, and they did. That ill they do that though?

Remember when the Saints gambled that WC would not take Judd, but they did? That gamble arguably cost us a flag or two.

Could of cost us as many as four Flags.

A fit and firing Chris Judd could have been the difference in 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010.

We definitely win 2009 and 2010 if he played for us.

This muted trade with Essendon is a massive decision to make if it’s true. I hope we get it right.

Agreed. I don't buy the next year's a superdraft BS, if there's a player we want this year then we should go after him.
"Superdrafts" aren't very super unless you're bottom third of the ladder so eff that.
That said, I'd love to get West Coasts future 1st in the bank if they want to snaffle up the WA kids this year.

Have to agree with Chris Doerre re Kobe Ryan. Had a terrific year except for a slight hiccup during the nationals. Missed the first week with covid and the games against Vic Metro and Vic Country was totally mis-managed. He attacks the ball hard, very quick clean hands, runs and carries and can kick goals. He is courageously tough, works hard, no nonsense and runs all day. He is an absolute ball magnet, is a genuine all rounder mid but can also play back and forward. Apparently a down to earth lad who has excellent leadership skills, always in the leadership groups, captain or vice captain, well respected by his peers and fellow players. Was vice captain of the SA side.

We’ve been saying that for a decade.

There's an old thought experiment about tossing coins. Get 1000 people, get them all to toss a coin ten times and call it in the air, if they get it wrong any time then they're out. After ten tosses you'll have one or two left. Are those one or two genius coin tossers? Or are they just lucky? Same applies to most areas of life where luck holds sway.

Obviously in drafting there's a bit more skill involved but there's still a huge amount that can go right or wrong unpredictably.
Ok, so because the most successful clubs have drafted completely differently to how you are suggesting clubs should, you are putting their success down to mostly luck...

If we draft as poorly as we have in the past it really doesn't matter what position we target though unfortunately

We've taken a heap of mids it that time and haven't been able to produce an A grader, sake thing with our key position players until we landed King

Hopefully! And yet NWM could be gone in a year, any of Windy/Owens/McKenzie might not make it for some reason, others of them might top out at B grade rather than A grade.

We always think players look good for the first couple of years after we draft them (except Matty Allison). Billings + Dunstan + Acres looked like a pretty good haul until it wasn't any more. Dunstan was going to be a star from day one when he got a Rising Star nomination, Billings always looked like silk and then he beat Carlton single-handedly, Acres - well, I guess he was always a bit enigmatic.

I love the look of our group from last year, but there's still a lot of uncertainty with them.

No, some recruiters are definitely better than others. Wells, Beatson, etc. I just don't know if we've got one who's actually good - and neither does the club. The club thought Trout and Libba were good enough for head recruiter.

The easiest way to manage the risk that you might have a mediocre recruiter is to ask him to pick mids and that way if he's actually good, we'll get a great midfield. And if he's just ok then we'll still get a chance at a good midfield.

Essendon are listening to offers for their No.4, knowing South Australia’s Mattaes Phillipou may be available down the order, but recruiters who spoke to The Age believe none of the top-10 choices will change hands.

The asking price, if a trade does eventuate, will differ depending on whom the Bombers engage in discussions, but industry sources said a future second-round selection may be enough if they go back only one to three spots.

I wouldn't mind if we did that. Still getting 2 first round players in.

I just don't want us to trade our F1 to move up in the order and leave with 1 player.

My crack at the Top 10

1. GWS - Aaron Cadman - KPF
2. Bris - (bid) Will Ashcroft - mid
3. NM - Harry Sheezel - forw
4. NM - George Wardlaw - mid
5. Ess - Mattaes Phillipou - forw/mid
6. GC - Bailey Humphrey - mid/forw
7. Haw - Elijah Tsatas - mid
8. Geel - Jhye Clark - mid
9. WCE - Reuben Ginbey - mid
10. StK - Cam Mackenzie - mid

We're in a sweet spot for one of: Mackenzie, Tsatas, Humphrey or Phillipou. No need to pick swap.

If Allan or Busslinger push into the Top 10 on Draft night, throw the sink at Carlton for P11. Two of the above "sweet spot" list would be unreal under RTB for a year.

Yep that’s my top 10 too.

To me the top 3 looks like it will produce three guns then there is a pool of good even talent that is a dice roll until about 10, then they get a bit speculative. Basically the move up would give us first choice in an even pool. Not worth a two for one to do that. If there was a star type at 5 you'd certainly think about it but it's probably Tsatas over Phillipou....I'd rather be the Dons in that deal. Could end up with two stars for one pick for a player they would have taken at 5 anyway.

We don't need numbers, we need top end. Trading out of next year is the opposite of good management. You are giving up a ticket in the lottery.

There are so many factors impacting on successful recruitment outside of the recruiters decisions. Injuries, development, coaching, the other areas of the club.
