Alarm bells : Started the year as a key defender yet recently has been moved into the middle and is getting good numbers.
Is he linked to Norf?
I assume North will take him at 1 or 2 because they've drafted a lot of midfielders at the last few drafts, but there is no way he gets passed Essendon at pick 4/5Is he linked to Norf?

Latest ranking have MacKenzie at pick 12Being our academy’s player aside, I think cam Mackenzie would be the perfect fit for our future midfield. He is more your spread hard from the stoppage and run two ways like a Bailey smith/sam Walsh. Add that to your “petracca” style of explosive mid in windy, and your hybrid crash and bash mid of mitchi. Imagine that starting centre bounce in 3 years time with nas on a win
I would take ESPN's rankings with a grain of salt.Latest ranking have MacKenzie at pick 12
Ashcroft 1
Phillipou 2
Sheezel 3
Wardlaw 4
Tsatas 5
Cadman 6
Busslinger 7
Humphrey 8
Hustwaite 9
Hewitt 10
Clarke 11
They are all about the same till pick 8 , so we are still a very good chance to secure him at 9.I would take ESPN's rankings with a grain of salt.
He has Casey Voss (who was looked over in this mid season draft) at 14. Also had Schlensog at 16 this time last year who never got picked up.
Twomey has him at 6, draft central at 7They are all about the same till pick 8 , so we are still a very good chance to secure him at 9.
Instead we took Kyle :/McKenzie was only 21 days off being eligible for last year's draft
Probably would been able to get him as a rookie last year...
It was a free hit and well worth the risk IMO. The kid had some talentInstead we took Kyle :/
It was rumoured a while ago that he wanted to come back to Melbourne. Haven't heard anything beyond that.Where has the Bruhn talk come from. Have heard nothing at all, and would cost plenty.
Rather just keep Bytel.

We don’t have a crystal ball no one sore him coming on like thisInstead we took Kyle :/
That was a great read, very informative intro to this draft group. Looking forward to hearing more in the lead up!We are in an interesting spot in the Draft bit like last year we are at the tail end of the 2nd tier of players
There are probably a couple of tiers to the first round of the draft with what looks like a clear top 4 distancing themselves from the rest.
- Ashcroft
- Wardlaw
- Sheezel
- Tsatis
Wardlaw has injury concerns so he could drop from 1-2 down to 4 or even a couple of picks lower if clubs are really spooked but he is arguably the best player in the draft so he won't slip too far. Sheezel and Tsatis are lighting it up in the Nab League showing they are a level up on that comp. I won't waste time on them as they will all definitely be gone by out pick.
The only wrinkle in the. top 4 lock is GWS who might decide they need to take a punt on Cadman as a Key Forward given they desperately need a forward if they don't you would imagine Essendon would.
5. Cadman
He probably deserves a spot all on his own given key forwards are hard to find I suspect someone will go early on him and frankly if we had pick 5 I probably would as well. Sets up our Forward line with him and King pretty complimentary types. Cadman has the workrate will present time and time again is physically a big solid kid as opposed to Kings lean athleticism. I like the idea of them working in tandem. But he will be gone before we get to pick so GWS or Dons I think.
Then there is the bunch of players we will end up being a chance to pick up that I would be really stoked to get but might end up being temptingly out of reach.
6. Phillipou
7. McKenzie
8. Buslinger
Phillipou is a big kid who is really young for this draft doesn't turn 18 till Dec his first 20 minutes v Victoria he was dynamic winning contests inside and getting space outside before he hurt his back and slowed up. He can play forward is a bit like Owens in that respect a midfielder who can be a target forward it is still a bit of a projection to see what he will be at AFL level but could be the best of the lot. He is not super fast but is a good mover one of those players you can easily pick out on the footy field by the way he moves I am not as convinced as some in this thread on his kicking he is not a bad kick just not a stand out feature of his game. He can roost it though the highlight goal he kicked against Vic Metro was a bomb. I would have said with Adelaide and Port ahead of us on draft night he is very unlikely to make it through but Adelaide will be giving up their Pick to GC for Rankine which just leaves Port so things might change
McKenzie is the safest bet he is just a quality player taller midfielder who gets you most with his run and carry and good disposal and decision making. Nothing too flashy good pace not electric clean disposal not mecurial smart and hardworking big possession winner who makes them count. Question mark is, he played in a pretty dominant midfield for Vic Metro, so was he part of the reason they were dominant or the lucky recipient of a dominant inside group. My read is he was part of the reason they just out ran their opponents particularly him and Ashcroft. A bit like Daicos and Ward last year. Has a bigger frame than Ashcroft and Wardlaw and Tsatis too that will help at the next level. The fact he is a St Kilda NGA is unlikely to influence us too much I think those programs are overstated in how much contact and influence we have on his development. More compelling will be the rumours Nas is talking about going home after 12 months with Phillipou and Buslinger also interstaters we might be a little more inclined to pick the local.
Buslinger I have seen less of but he is the pick of the key backs has both the defensive game and the intercept and rebounding skill would be a key piece in a premiership defence. We have a real need for this kind of player and they are thin on the ground. Modern defence requires players to be more than stoppers and while there are a few I like that fit this mould he can be the genuine key back with this skill. Is debatable if this is the biggest need on the list but if the other 7 are gone and he is still there at our pick I am pretty sure we would jump at the chance to solve that problem long term.
The only caveat to that is Bailey Humphrey he is the one that is making the late charge up the lists and could make me change my mind about the above
9. Bailey Humphrey
Humphrey was injured for the champs to date but is posting up huge numbers and lots of goals (and lots of points) in the Nab League. I really haven't seen enough to have him added to the list above but am really keen to see how he goes in Vic Metro v Country game in Grand Final week. His kicking is a bit sloppy particularly set shots from what little I have seen and read but he is a pretty potent mix of mid and forward powerful explosive DeGoey type I think. If he has a big game in the final champs game and shows he can have a similar impact at that level that he has at Nab League he will jump up if he is a flop in that game he probably drifts outside our pick so a wait and see on him as it is he is still ninth on my wish list currently which still means he is gone before our pick.
Hopefully one or more of these are still there at pick 10 but from my point of view while there are still good players after this currently I would be frustrated if we missed out on the ones I rated. Hopefully a few clubs are keener on some of the next batch than I am.
10. Jhye Clark is very good and a decent chance of going early but to me is a bit like Ben Hobbs last year has all the stats on the board to be top ten but might not project as high end at AFL as the players in the list above still if all the players above are gone I would take Clark
11. Matt Jefferson some one might be tempted as key forwards are tough to find and go early personally I am not convinced, he is pretty skinny and not super fast or tall will take a long time to be AFL ready IMO. Don't think he is a good match with King he is a shorter less talented version of the same player.
12. Elijah Hewitt some might prefer him over McKenzie he is more inside a bit more power at this stage Hawks for example might think McKenzie is too much like Ward and McDonald that they picked up last year and Hewitt provides a point of difference (equally true for Clark)
13. Brayden George - Has been injured for most of the season just making it back now like Humphrey a big tail end and a good showing in the Country v Metrro game could elevate him
Bit to play out yet including the combine but by my reckoning pick 10 is right on the cusp of the players I rate at the top end of the draft.

What do you mean that's not how it works? How?
That's not how it works.

McKenzie is a St Kilda NGA player
He was born on the 21st of January, meaning he was just 21 days off being eligible for last year's draft
He only really burst onto the scene early this year. If he was in last year's crop he wouldn't have gone top 20, meaning we could have matched with late picks like we did with Windhager/Owens or taken him first up in the rookie draft like we did Peris and Kyle.
Yeah we got unlucky with McKenzie. That's really s**t timing. Imagine if we'd snaffled him with a late or rookie pick. That hurts when the Dogs get a pick 1 for zilch.
Sorry I thought you were saying that he could have been eligible for the rookie draft last year. What do you mean that's not how it works?
