Yeah we got unlucky with McKenzie.

Even if it were the old rules we could have traded away our first this year and still got him.

Dogs did have to give up their whole draft hand to match that bid though, so whilst it did get them top end talent it leaves them out of the rest of the draft.

Still a win for them though.

I just hope we look back at Windhager and Owens and think we were bloody lucky in 10 years time.

We used pick 57 to get Windhager and he would go top 10 now

Did the Dogs trade out all their picks because they were getting him? Was that how they got Treloar? Good value if it was. 2 stars for a bag of picks.

They gave up their 1st round pick and a future 2nd for Treloar and picks they put towards JUH.

I think in total they used 4 picks inside the 42 on him, so whilst it was a good deal for them they didn't just get him for free.

They basically used a 1st, 2nd and 2 3rds to get JUH and Treloar I think.

It's a tad confusing looking back at it.

North won't bid. Nothing to gain.

Teams bid because it means the club has to match by using up other picks. Therefore everyone else's picks move forward by those picks used up.

The thing is though they end up getting the top draft pick , well before the struggling team's and really it is all about getting a pick in the top 5 or 10.
It pushed our pick down one and it means a lot when you only get one good pick in the first round.

The whole issue is that the system didn't make teams give up their first round pick.
System says if someone bids pick one, you have to use your best pick. If its going to be predictable you can trade out your earlier picks and make up points with later picks ( we did it with our second rounder with Owens and Windhager - basically 2 secondrounders for the price of one.).

They don't give up their early picks, they trade them and get something worthy of those picks, so they get the equivalent to a priority pick without deserving it.
