Cameron Mackenzie

Midfielder , VIC

Age: 21/01/04
Weight: 80kg
Height: 187cm
Club: Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons/Beaumaris FC/Brighton Grammar
2022 National Champs 112 ranking points, 26.3 disposals, 4.7 inside 50s, 3.7 marks, 4 clearances, 0.3 goals, 2.3 tackles (three games)
An early draft bolter this year, Mackenzie’s NAB League club Sandringham Dragons did not know where he sat at the start of pre-season. But by June, the ball-winning midfielder was widely considered to be a first-round prospect in this year’s draft. Mackenzie started the year by playing some strong football with both the Dragons and Brighton Grammar, before dominating a Vic Metro trial game in early June. He logged 32 disposals, eight clearances and kicked a goal in that match to be firmly on the radar of AFL recruiters. Mackenzie has gone on to produce an eye-catching under-18 national championships campaign with Vic Metro, including the side’s second match against Western Australia when he logged 28 disposals, five clearances and a goal. Part of St Kilda’s Next Generation Academy because his father was born in South Africa, Mackenzie has great speed and composure, while also being a neat disposer of the ball.
You are just teasing ,will be gone by our pick I reckon

Jedd Busslinger

Defender, WA

Age: 11/03/04
Weight: 82kg
Height: 196cm
Club: East Perth/Coolbinia
WAFL U18s 132 ranking points, 23.8 disposals, 11.3 intercepts, 5.5 intercept marks 2022 National Champs 97 ranking points, 22 disposals, 5.5 intercepts, 3 intercept marks
Just like Denver Grainger-Barras two years ago, the best young intercept defender in the draft is from Western Australia, with Busslinger proving impenetrable at WAFL Colts level for East Perth. He was equally as impressive for WA at the national carnival, before going in for season-ending shoulder surgery, following a 26-disposals, six-intercept performance against the Allies. Busslinger reads the play well, backs himself in the air and doesn’t look like a typical 196cm big man when he’s kicking, such is his control by foot. Very much in the top-10 mix.
Tyrell Dewar

Tyrell DewarForward/defender

Tyrell Dewar

George Wardlaw

Midfielder, VIC

Age: 18/07/04
Weight: 82kg
Height: 182cm
Club: Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers/St Peters FC/ St Kevin’s College
2022 National Champs N/A
Considered a top-three draft prospect entering the year, Wardlaw has kept that tag despite playing limited football this season due to injury. Wardlaw took the chocolates from a head-to-head midfield battle against fellow highly-rated prospect Will Ashcroft in the opening round of the NAB League, logging 24 disposals, five marks, four clearances, eight tackles and one goal in a best-on-ground display. The AFL Academy member went on to be named best afield for the Australian under-18s side in its exhibition match against Collingwood’s VFL team in May, recording 18 disposals that day. However, his impressive season came to a halt not long after, with a hamstring injury – which then had a further setback – seeing Wardlaw sidelined for Vic Metro’s first three games of the national championships. Regardless, recruiters have seen that the medium midfielder is a competitive beast in the contest and will attack any ball in dispute whether it be in the air or at ground level. He has good speed, a good leap and is a power athlete who can often be found bursting away from stoppages. Wardlaw models his game on Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver.

Could you do Jhye Clark?
Potentially a sliding gun midfielder

Jhye Clark

Midfielder, VIC

Age: 23/07/04
Weight: 77kg
Height: 180cm
Club: Vic Country/Geelong Falcons/Queenscliff FC/St Ignatius Drysdale
2022 National Champs 121 ranking points, 24.7 disposals, 3.7 inside 50s, 9 marks, 4.3 clearances, 7.7 score involvements, 4 tackles (three games)
A small midfielder who attacks the ball fiercely, Clark distributes it neatly by both hand and foot on either side of his body. He is an aggressive tackler who is one of the standout two-way runners in this year’s draft pool and he has performed consistently at a high level throughout the year. The Geelong Falcons captain in the NAB League, Clark was also picked to captain Vic Country in the under-18 national championships and has led from the front throughout the tournament both on and off the field. He brings other players into the game in his role through the midfield and also has an ability to go forward and hit the scoreboard. Given all his attributes, Clark has been likened to a young Joel Selwood. Clark’s year top-age season has come on the back of him being named the best player for Vic Country’s under-17s last year. An AFL Academy member, he also played for the Australian under-18 team against Collingwood’s VFL side in May and was one of his side’s best as he gathered 19 possessions. Clark’s father, Steve, is a well-known Geelong Football League identity, having coached Leopold to a premiership in 2016 and played for Geelong’s under-19s in his younger years.

Bailey Humphrey

Midfielder/Forward, VIC

Age: 11/09/04
Weight: 86kg
Height: 184cm
Club: Vic Country/Gippsland Power/ Moe NFC/ Lowanna College
2022 National Champs N/A
A powerful midfielder-forward, Humphrey has excited recruiters despite missing a significant chunk of football this year. He is a real competitor who attacks the ball ferociously, has seriously quick breakaway speed from stoppages and is a neat kick on both feet. When playing forward, he is a strong mark in the contest and is dangerous around goals. Humphrey suffered a meniscus tear in his knee in May, which meant he missed Vic Country’s first three games of the under-18 national championships. However, he made a stunning return to the field for Gippsland Power in the NAB League in Round 14, logging 31 disposals (14 contested), 12 marks, 14 score involvements and four goals and kicked another four goals in the final home-and-away round.
Starting to really warm to this kid…

Barry looks like he'll be a ripper. In that game where he had 31 disposals (14 contested), 12 marks, 14 score involvements and four goals....he also kicked 5 behinds. He's absolutely ridiculous. Sheezel looks a gun too but doubt he's in our range.

Humphrey and Phillipou the two that excite me the most, can fill that De Goey role for us, and maybe take a look at Hayes if we end up with a later pick

Mattaes Phillipou

Forward/midfielder, SA

Age: 27/12/2004
Weight: 83kg
Height: 190cm
Club: Eagles/PHOS Camden
2022 SANFL U18s 144 ranking points, 28 disposals, 12.3 contested possessions, 12 goals (total) 2022 National Champs 102 ranking points, 16.5 disposals, 8 contested possessions, 4 goals (total)
The son of former Eagles SANFL star and three-game Western Bulldogs forward Sam Phillipou, Mattaes now looks set to be the first SA player taken in this year’s draft. His hands are great at the contest, but they’re even better in the air, with the 18-year-old switching between tough, clean on-baller to high-marking, goalkicking forward with damaging effect. Phillipou tallied 23 disposals and three goals in Round 2 against the Roosters, before following it up a week later with 26 and three against West Adelaide. The long-kicking left-footer had another 33 and three in Round 8, before exploding in the national carnival opener to finish with 181 ranking points against the Allies. Phillipou was dominant at times as a bottom-ager last year and recruiters are excited about his scope for further improvement.

This guy uses the ball so well.

This guy uses the ball so well.
Seeing as so many young mids start on the HFF, I’m all for him too.

Give me most of the mooted top 15 or so, as long as they’re mids or mid/fwds…

Would love if Jhye Clark fit to us. Gives off Andy Brayshaw vibes to me. Smaller midfielder who people may say Is vanilla, but Brayshaw just won the mvp. Two way runner who brings others into the game and captain material. Does everything to a Hight standard without the glitz and glamour.

Exactly what I was thinking. If he falls to us, while unlikely, we'd be stupid to not take him

Are there any KPPs that'll get picked up early and push some mids towards us?

There's normally 1 or 2 that get picked in the top 10, even if they are a bit of a reach.

On CPH2145 using BigFooty.com mobile app
Busslinger and Cadman seem to be the 2 talls that'll go top 10 with Jefferson in and around the edges of it as well.
Both should go before our pick which should get us a quality mid like Hewett, Humphry or Clark.

10. St Kilda - Jedd Busslinger
The most advanced key defender in this draft, Busslinger is an elite intercept mark who reads the ball earlier in flight, attacks the ball aerially and plucks the ball out of the air. With ball in hand, Busslinger is a composed and reliable ball user while defensively he is competitive and able to curb the influence of his direct opponent.

From Chris Doerre, a reputable draft guy on ESPN. This is his early first round draft prediction

I was right into him…..until I saw him play. His disposal is very ordinary.

He looks good at Colts level but you'd want to watch him against those good forwards like Cadman and Jefferson to get a better idea. I still hate taking KPBs with first round picks. We really need a big stopper and guys like Phillips from the VFL could do that.

Without checking back (cos I can’t be bothered) I’m sure that is a common theme amongst posters leading up to every draft.

Still doesn’t stop many on here moaning we didn’t take Aaron Naughton, who despite his current role in the forward line, was being sold in the 2017 draft showroom as a backman.

His dispsoal doesn't look too poor here, though I haven't watched him often enough to make a call.

It's not poor exactly but he's not great at moving it to the next player. The others in his range are a lot more clean and look like they have more time. Elijah Hewett and Phillipou look a class above with both kicking and time and space. Clark looks a prospect regardless, but when you're talking top 15 picks you are getting into the pedantic stuff.

I was impressed with Sheezel but I’m not paying mid prices for a half forward. Not all positions are of equal worth Imo which is why Adelaide’s offer to rankine is just crazy. Best available sounds great but I don’t see that as a sound strategy in practice. Nfl teams have players bracketed together but they’re weighted by several factors including position.

Think he looks a bit more proper mid/forward than some. Looks quite good when he goes on ball but definitely more dangerous around goal.
