his kicking is terrible, but to my eyes he looks a much better mover and decision maker (in close) than mckenzie.. I haven't been following this draft at all so I don't know where they're gonna go, but humphrey looks like a legit centre square mid, just tell him to kick it long

I'm gunning for the mover in Hustwaite who is up to position 12 in that list. He's better then both in my opinion with his height making him an Adam Goodes type. Lot will come down to the Vic Metro v Country final game in two and a half weeks. Will have a major impact on the draft order methinks.

At the moment i am expecting the club to take our NGA if he's available.

If we do draft Humphrey i won't hate it. He has some excellent traits but i also think he may be a turnover king at AFL level. The club has to weigh that up.

The midfield is always the toughest line to pick, and it was hardly any different this year with such a stacked group of on-ballers in the NAB League. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, leading AFL Draft prospect Will Ashcroft features at the heart of midfield, roving next to Vic Country and Geelong adversary, Jhye Clark.

Set to lock horns in this month’s National Championship decider, the pair skippered their respective NAB League regions in remarkably consistent campaigns. Dandenong’s Henry Hustwaite rounds out the centre bounce mix alongside Murray ruck Toby Murray, who was an automatic entrant for his repeat team of the week nominations.

There’s some excitement on the outside too. Oakleigh jet Elijah Tsatas, who starred in that position early in the season, features on the opposite wing to Tasmanian Colby McKercher. The speedy midfielder is the first bottom-ager in our side and like Tsatas, can also play on the inside.

It all hinges on what game plan we play. Back in 2020 our players with iffy disposal looked good because it was all based on speed and gaining meterage, whereas now that we're playing a more possession based style, it really shows when your disposal isn't fantastic. Personally, I think we should take Humphrey.

Without checking back (cos I can’t be bothered) I’m sure that is a common theme amongst posters leading up to every draft.

Still doesn’t stop many on here moaning we didn’t take Aaron Naughton, who despite his current role in the forward line, was being sold in the 2017 draft showroom as a backman.
It's funny but in my honest opinion if Naughton was playing back he would be a triple All Australian by now. I completely understand why the Bulldogs have him up front, I just think he is a marginally better player as a backman, and that is where he would really hit his straps individually.

Lewis Hayes with our 2nd pick?

Lewis Hayes with our 2nd pick?

Lewis Hayes has staked his claim as the next best key defender in the crop, having stood up on the big stage during this year’s National Championships. The brother of Port Adelaide ruck Sam stands at 197cm, and reads the play beautifully across centre half-back. He took on the kick-in duties for Eastern and can certainly rack up possessions, using them efficiently by foot.

While Hayes will be pushing into top 20 contention, there are not too many genuine key defensive options in the same range. One of the more solid operators out there is James Van Es, the Vic Country full back. Also a 197cm prospect, he is much more physically developed compared to Hayes, and has a clear one-wood with his intercept marking in one-on-one duels. He’ll be a chance down the order.

Cal Twomey has him at pick 19. Van Es the next best key defender appears to be the one that is more gettable?

Rob Harvey was a fairly shithouse kick if he had to do anything over 25 metres.

Lenny the same.

His action doesn’t look all that awful to me, just a bit stiff.

It's his first kick on goal that goes OOTF that freaks people I think. The guy is a beast, I'd have him in a second. I've watched a lot of the videos and even the god kicks look pretty ordinary.

Phillipou was the only one that I thought looked outstanding by foot but he's a lefty so no real surprise. Elijah Hewett looks a great kick but occasionally shanked them. I really like him, his ceiling looks Shai Bolton, his bottom looks a bit Sam Powell-Pepper though.

Is this draft any good?

Not bad. The top 5 or so look a step up but then really even group through the next lot. I think there will be a few guns in this one. We should get someone pretty good. I think the second rounders even look good.

Thoughts on Elijah Hewitt?

Looks a gun but would West Coast pull the trigger on him at Pick 2 (3 after Ashcroft)?

Could be around our pick

Of course Freo has a pick after us

I like him, has some real go. There is a bit of a hint of Winmar in him to me.

No Mackenzie? Must be picked by a Saints fan.

We’re going to get a fairly decent player at our (current) pick.

I think people just have draft-related PTSD.

Majority of our draft haul midfielders for the next 2 years in Rounds 1 & 2 need to be skilled midfielders with leadership.

Choose a mix of height and a mix of build but all need to be able to be smart footballers, well skilled and with leadership.

Look at the change NWM, Owens and Windhager brought in one season. Repeat x2 and we'll have a gun young core.

Just had a look at the draft player's again:
As we picked up Owens, Peris? Wanganeen-Milera & Windhager- all midfielders, in the last draft.

This year I think we should pick up KPP's, as next year, seems to be a strong depth draft, with abundant midfielders.

So with pick 10, Henry Hustwaite & hope he can become a KPP, currently a tall midfielder.

Pick 27. Either I.Keeler (Paddy Ryder clone) or Max Gruzewski (David Sierakowski clone?).

I reckon we take whichever one of Mckenzie/Humphrey/Busslinger falls to our first pick. If all taken then probably go Hewitt.

Second rounder should probably go towards a tall or a sliding mid like Sonsie did last year. Hayes/Keeler could be potentially at 27. Wouldn't mind trading up a couple spots to secure one of them. Lemmey as a 3rd rounder would be a good pick up as well, if we can develop him and show why he was rated as a top 5 pick before this year.

If Harvey Gallagher falls to the rookie draft, I'd love for him to be picked up as a back flanker especially if Hill is traded. His form since moving back has been outstanding and he is only a few months older than Ashcroft so being an overager isn't a huge deal.

The "experts" have said that this draft is rubbish, clubs want to trade out their top picks, only 40-50 odd picks to be taken.

Is this for real? Trust us to finally go to the draft when it's a rubbish crop. We missed the boat in the last few years, apart from the obvious academy kids.

The top end of the this draft is very good like all drafts are. This one might not have the depth of others.

Where has anything been said from the club that we will collect late draft picks to get some of those rubbish prospects?
