Imagine what it was like for people who immigrated to Australia in the 1960s. It was a long ship ride, with Airlines mainly for the wealthy. Some of them would never see some of their friends and family ever again.
International phonecalls were hideous, it was mostly letters.

Even in the 1990's my wife and i had $300 phone bills because we moved to Perth from Victoria.
Air fares back then would have been a hinderance even to AFL players.

Now they can Zoom or talk or text whenever they want.

I don't know what its like nowdays for armed forces, but the Navy in particular used to be long periods away from home.

AFL players are meant to be tough. Fine go home to mummy, but don't complain if i call you buttercup.

Pick 10, St. Kilda: Cameron Mackenzie (SD, 187/80, IM). Mackenzie is a St. Kilda next generation academy player but with them not getting rights to him until after pick 40 I'd expect them to take him here after investing time into him. Mackenzie adds to St. Kilda's midfield stocks and will be one to possibly have an immediate impact for next year.
Others considered: Matthew Jefferson, Olli Hotton

Pick 35, St. Kilda: Max Gruzewski (OC, 192/84, Utility)

I didn't realise Max Gruzewski was more of a defender. I thought he looked good playing forward in the Metro v Country game.

I just went off the draft central write up of him. Wouldn't be a bad pick up and seems to have some very good attributes but their description of him as a third tall and someone not having a stand out position is a bit off putting given what we already have.

He reminded a lot of Mitch Georgiades in Champs final. Looked like a key forward in that game, but its a very small sample size.

I think if he's relying on his leap he's probably more likely to make it as a genuine key position player up the front end rather than back

Think we need a line-breaking, run & carry small defender- Darcy Jones who is really a utility player at this stage.
Elijah Hewett- probably fits your burst mid.
Harry Lemmey, Jovan Petric- Tall Forward

Jaiden Magor- med. Forward./mid.

I like the sound of Konstanty, but he'll probably go between our first and second picks.

Lewis Hayes , a bottom age 197cm defender may be there at our second pick or even our third.
Van Es, maybe our third or even our forth Pick.
Then there is Phillips from Port Melbourne, maybe available at our 4th Pick.

Greater Western Sydney is yet to decide whether it will bid on Brisbane father-son Will Ashcroft after securing the No.1 pick as part of a bumper draft hand.
The Giants hold four of the top 20 draft picks this year after the completion of the AFL trade period, with selections 1, 15, 18 and 19 putting them in an enviable position.

GWS traded up the order to secure the No.1 pick from North Melbourne, and it is expected to use it on Vic Country key forward Aaron Cadman.

However, a bid on Ashcroft – who is widely viewed as the top underage talent this year – has not been ruled out.

“We’ve obviously only had pick 1 for a couple of days and I think it’s closer to the draft that we’ll make that sort of decision,” GWS recruiting manager Adrian Caruso said.

“We’re going to go through the process and our order and ultimately it comes back to our order and that will be the determining factor on whether we bid, more than anything else.

“There’s still six weeks to go, so we just want to take our time with it all.”

The Giants received pick 15 from Brisbane as part of a pick swap, pick 18 from Geelong in exchange for Tanner Bruhn and pick 19 as part of the trade that saw Tim Taranto move to Richmond.

Brisbane did its best to load up on some draft points during the trade period, securing four second-round selections in anticipation of an early bid on classy midfielder Ashcroft.

The Lions also have Jaspa Fletcher as a Next Generation Academy prospect, who is expected to be a top-20 pick.

Richmond had four top-40 draft picks entering the trade period but now have none, with the Tigers’ first selection being at pick 53 after raids on GWS pair Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto.

West Coast holds picks 8 and 12 after handing over its pick 2 during the trade period as part of the Junior Rioli and Jason Horne-Francis mega-trade.

Those mid-first round picks will allow the Eagles to target some home-grown West Australian talent around that mark like Rueben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett and Jedd Busslinger.

“It’s not about WA talent, as such,” Eagles list manager Rohan O’Brien said.

“We’re thinking that they’re two really good picks. Eight and 12 in any draft should be a really good result and to have access to those picks, we’re really pleased.”

Multiple clubs are still trying to move up the draft order ahead of the event on November 28, with the belief that the top six or seven players in this year’s draft sit a rung above the rest.

St Kilda is one such club weighing up its options, with the Saints currently holding picks 9, 28, 32 and 47.

“We’ve got the ability to trade picks for another four weeks, I suppose,” St Kilda list manager James Gallagher said.

“The picks in the first 25 or 30, they’re being really tightly held and again in the first half a dozen. So (it’s) easier said than done.

“We’ll try and come in if we feel like we need to – or want to. But you’ve got to be willing to give something up. So we’ll work that out.”

Who could be available at first pick: Bailey Humphrey, Cam Mackenzie (NGA), Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Matthew Jefferson

Who’s in the mix after that: Brayden George, Charlie Clarke, Jaiden Magor, Bailey Macdonald

The under-fire Saints desperately need of matchwinners, and there’s several who could come into calculations with their first choice. Bailey Humphrey, who has shades of Jordan De Goey, would be a perfect fit but he may be off the board by then. They won’t have first dibs on their Next Generation Academy star Cam Mackenzie – bids inside the top 40 are protected - but taking him would make a lot of sense. His incredible poise, elite ball-use and speed can boost a lacklustre midfield group, and taller midfield option Mattaes Phillipou is also in that range as a dynamic midfielder-forward. Other gamebreaking forwards who could enter the frame with their next two selections include the powerful Brayden George, who will be sidelined for all of 2023 with injury, SA forward-midfielder Jaiden Magor and Sandringham livewire Charlie Clarke. Draft bolter Bailey Macdonald is raw but has electric speed which could help add to Jack Sinclair’s run off halfback in time.

Latest word: If you’ve been living under a rock, St Kilda is currently coachless after their club review. List boss James Gallagher said last week the club isn’t interested in finishing sixth, so they appear set to hit the draft hard in the coming years.

Mattaes Phillipou: I think I‘d have to say myself, just because I think if you’re not going to back yourself, you probably don’t have the confidence required to play in the league,” he said.

“Whether I think I’m the best right now, I would probably say yes as well. But look at the end of the day, it‘s what clubs need and I might not be the best fit for a club. But if I had Pick 1, I’d definitely be taking myself

Stack is definitely the only Delistee I'd want to have us look at as an immediate pick up, presuming RTB is on his way and could kick metaphorical butt.

Then maybe leave a list spot open and have one or two of blokes like Stocker, Narkle and RCD (along with a state leaguer) put in a preseason and see what they have to offer in terms of effort and cohesion.

I just don't see the reason we'd bring in a 29 year old depth player unless it's a back up ruck.
