It means they’re in front as long as our 2023 pick is earlier than pick 18.

And they get 2 cracks at it in the 2023 1st round.

They most likely get a pick around the same number they are giving up and give up a years development on a kid

If Stkilda was offered the same deal as we are talking about offering Carlton , I would be disappointed if took that

Carlton also took the punt on their future first to get Liam Stocker (which did not work out well at all) so who knows how that might have impacted any future decisions they make in that regard

List managers do NOT gamble on where other teams are going to finish.
Add to that , they value a pick this year higher than the equivalent pick next year.

If you got to have Garry Ablett Jr this year or next year , you prefer him this year.

Which is the scenario whenever a club trades out for a future pick.

Yet it has happened plenty of times.

Based on that theory no team has or ever will trade a 1st rounder for a future 1st.

Hmmmm....

Unless they think next years draft is better (which seems to be the consensus).

Of course you take Gary Ablett when you can get him but if you could have pick 3 in the 01 draft or pick 3 in the 02 draft which one would you prefer?

If you sweeten the deal they will.
1st and a player for future 1st.
1st and a second for future 1st.

Exception: Father/son or academy stuff at play, but there will be less of it with academy players in future.
Even then a smart club would have already traded out the pick they don't want the previous year.

Fremantle traded picks 1. 17, 20 and 36 out of 2001.
I'm not sure if they knew what they had at the time.

Hi Mum would be a breath work practitioner and cacao ceremony facilitator, also selling crystal infused water on the side
You forgot running art lectures at the local university and African themed music classes on weekends.

Anything to charge the sacred chakras 🔮

Jarred McVeigh arguably better than Luke Ball.

The deal I suggested was sweetened.

The 2023 & #47 for #11 values our 2023 pick at #18. So we don't win the flag & the deal is already in the positive for Carlton. I'd suggest that most opposition clubs would consider our 2023 pick would be significantly earlier than 18...

Not to mention that clubs seem to rate next year's draft higher than this one.

It was just a hypothetical in response to the discussion about Sydney's picks being a potential target anyway.

Post career probably but pre draft absolutely not.

Pick 3 in 02 was Jared Brennan anyway and pick 3 in 01 was Judd not ball.

Not all drafts are equal is my point and if you said you can have pick 10 in a "meh" draft or pick 10 (or better) in a "super" draft youre certainly not dismissing the question out of hand.

If the draft remains the same that turns into

Hodge, Kelly, Elstone (meh) and Sam Mitchell...

Jeeeeeeezus what a whiff.

To rub salt in, Croad went back after 2 seasons, they got a lousy 2003 draft pick.

Yeah, it's a negotiation and clubs have to sell it to members. If you deal with GWS or Gold Coast it's easier to get a deal because they have no fans to deal with. Not many do a straight swap of a future first for a current first unless it's club up the ladder speculating on a side saying shit or something.

Unless they have a FS the points don't mean much. They would be hoping that we finish bottom 8 if they give up a pick for a future pick. If we gave our pick 10 to Carlton for pick 47 and a future first, I would be in the shits about it.
