I know nothing about this draft, but just tuned in to see Ashcroft taken pick 2 and everyone saying "you've known for some time you'd be at Brisbane" etc. Given this, why wouldn't GWS place a bid on him? What's to lose for them (and the rest of the competition) in making Brisbane give up more pick value? It's a net gain for 17 clubs other than Brisbane, without risk that they wouldn't match.

He signed a contract months ago for 4 years. Brisbane had an under table agreement not to bid despite the AFL "cracking down" on it

GWS and Brisbane made a trade earlier, there's often a handshake deal attached.
