A couple of questions:
  • What could we potential milk out of Essendon if we threaten a bid on Davey? Would they throw in a F3 (maybe get a F4 back) to swap picks #24 and #25?
  • How high a selection could we realistically get our hands on for pick #39 + F2 (tied to Brisbane). Potentially Sydney’s #27?
I reckon that Davey situation could potentially be bigger than a F3.

Let's say no bids come for him by 24 (only 2 picks away).

If we let it be known to Bombres we're going to bid on him, they'll basically lose 25 in matching and be left with a few rubbish picks at 50+.

If we trade 24 for 25 they'll get a George, Cowan, Hayes or similar as well as Davey.

That is worth a lot to them, if we also chuck in our lower picks (we won't be using )to help match the eventual Davey bid, it could be worth Bombres F2 to them.

Sacrificing 1 pick place and some useless low picks in exchange for a 20-24 pick in a strong year would be a nice result.

Taking 3 picks inside 24 in a hot draft next year would be pretty good.

For those in the know, what is the negative on Hustwait?
Not sure there's any major flaws there, just a lack of real weapons. He's very composed with the ball in hand, can navigate through traffic and is a tidy user by hand and foot but not overly damaging and not a real hard inside ball winner. He's obviously a good size but that's not really a weapon in it's own right.

Seems a bit of a jack of all trades master of none.

Wouldn't mind us doing a Sydney and bidding on a few and trading slightly further back if we can do so and still get Clarke

Anyone else catch Darcy Jones being likened to Caleb Daniel in last nights fox footy broadcast? He's exactly like Caleb except he plays a different position, is extremely fast and aggressive, has a great leap and is only an average ball user. In their defence he is short and wears a helmet.

Trying to think if a worse player comparison has ever been made.

Yeah some of their comments in the trade thread were stupid. "Oh how will Busslinger feel knowing he wasn't the Dogs first choice" "Why would he want to be there"

Ummm, pretty sure Busslinger wouldn't give a Fk? Unless you're taken in the first three picks, then just about every player picked most likely wasn't the clubs first choice on the leader board. Gosh the reach for some stupid sheet.

I still think they are one of the most overrated teams in the league and will win nothing with the current group.
I love how they call us “minnows”, after all they are such a powerhouse

Think it’s a pretty reasonable to assume GWS May pick George or trade out the pick for someone else to get him.

Who do we think the Eagles will pick? Seem to need a ruck, maybe Barnett?

I don't understand why GWS didn't do more to dance around the Rowston bid match.
Surely they could have traded out 17, 19 and 20 for some 2023 first and second rounders and gotten back some late picks to match the bid.
They could always try to trade back in to this draft after the match. They really pissed away that pick 17.

The plastics have interviewed Clarke a number of times. They also wanted Konstanty so they're in the market for a small forward.

I think you will be near spot on, Ruck would make sense for the Eagles since their ruck and tall forward brigade is lacking.

GWS were linked to George, so it may come down to him or Clarke. Even though im not totally sold they will go for Clarke due to taking Jones who I think will be more a FWD, to FWD/MID, than a full time MID. They have a truck load of picks this year, so they can afford to take a chance on George. Though Demons want the Giants first pick. So not sure who the Demons might have an eye on? Think they were keen on Barnett too.

Yeah George seems like the obvious target someone will trade for.

There's also the possibility that GWS had two players they wanted in that range and that after losing a pick on Rowston they are now less inclined to trade that remaining pick.
Clarke could be that player for GWS - they were heavily linked to Clarke and Konstanty as pressure forwards pre-draft.

That makes sense. Might come down to if they get a really good offer for their pick. Seems to be pretty even from here so they may not get the usual haul

Couple mature age defensive options.

Ethan Phillips won the VFL medal for best young talent and was in the VFL team of the year. Turns 23 this year and is 196cm. Genuine full back option.

Stats

Rhett Montgomerie is 22 years old and 190cm. Has a state combine invite so a few clubs are keen. Plays as a 3rd tall.

Stats

Both good players. I have mentioned Montgomerie on here before. Great intercept Mark with no regard for his safety and great clean disposal too. Very handy 3rd tall.

We have drafted well for the picks we have had available for a sustained period and think this will continue with Jed and who we get next. Our main problem is we cannot attract high profile players like the cats and tigers have been able to do. Treloar being the exception who sort fell into our lap.

All this talk about George...

...does Kemp not make anyone else extremely nervous?

Its a long road back. I don't like the idea at all.
That's why he slid from top 10 to 20+ but there are plenty of teenage ACL successful recovery stories too. Max King and Riley Garcia come readily to mind.

If it was no risk he'd be off the board by now. We are in a position to afford that sort of risk.

Would avoid. Same knee, twice already majorly injured, do not like that gamble.

I'd be looking to somehow bring that 39 pick of ours forward to something in the 20ties, get Clark, get Hayse/Van Es and be done with this draft.

I don’t think we can take another tall defender. We have other list needs that need to be addressed.

If Busslinger doesn’t develop a one on one game a trade is the best bet in a year or two once Keath and Jones are wrapping up.

For the lurking Brisbane supporters...

Number of premierships won by Fagan - 0

Number of premierships won by Beveridge - 1

Number of grand finals made by Fagan - 0

Number of grand finals made by Beveridge - 2

Number of racial inquiries faced by fagan - well at least you can win something.

Dud coach is dud

Hey, now come on. Number of flags won by the Bears on paper -1 - and that's before the season even begins 😂

Agreed not worth another early pick this year. Keath, Jones, Gards, Darcy, Buss, TOB, Buku is more than enough to not worry early.

Would be going a late/rookie pick for a swingman however to develop

I'd have taken Weddle if available, because he's a more versatile type of defender who plays on smalls as well as talls. With him not available though I'm more inclined towards Clarke than anyone else. Luke Teal might be a good option at 39 if we want a medium lockdown defender.

I’m just not convinced they’d outright part with a F2 (likely pick 19-25 next year) to get an extra player in the same range this year.

I’d do it for their F3 and a wink-wink that they’re not allowed to pick the next player we want.

I’d then try to package Essendon’s (early) F3 with our pick #39 to move up the order.
