I am not seeing a great level of depth for this draft class.

Maybe 55 prospects worth a list spot. Talking to a recruiter (not ours), he mentions that there are 14/55 of the prospects who look great but are not going to develop much further due to attitude and motivation. He thinks that some clubs won’t have about 10/55 on their draft boards. Some players we think are good will end up at teams who aren’t ready to deal with them.

This makes me hugely wary of trading down. Smythe did a phantom with us trading down from 12 to 19 for pick 32. I don’t think it would be worth moving 12 for 15 for pick 32 and a future third…. In fact, I like the idea of trading pick 39 up about 8 spots for Binns using our future second round pick.

Trading down from 12 we really need a good return, as the draft isn’t deep.

Very interesting LG.
This time of year I pour through as much vision as I can looking for our next shiny new toy.
Gotta say this batch leaves me extremely underwhelmed.

You would think there are diamonds around our first pick , so I am with you we need to keep 12.
So far for me Philipou then Weddle.
Not yet convinced by Hollands , but some that have seen him play live might be able to change my mind.

I think we're in a pretty good spot for a slider. The only way I'd consider trading down is to gain and extra top 20 pick (e.g. Swans for 14 & 17) as we know they don't rate this year's draft.

Pick 39 should move up ~5 spots too after bids are matched. I wouldn't mind a 'hail mary' late pick on a small forward or ruck, as (particularly rucks) you can find a couple of good ones every year who make it to the rookie draft. In 2016 when we took English, the Big O was a rookie pick.

Phillipou is best case, seems like we get, one of busslinger Hewitt or hollands,

I highly doubt we trade up or down Sam is staunch and will only do so if its massively in our favour,

Waddle at 21

And small forward Clarke would be pretty sweet

I think we realistically can only get one of them. 21 seems a bridge too far.
Do people think 12 is too early for Weddle ?
We desperately need his profile on our list in my opinion.
Phillipou at 11 and Weddle at 21 not impossible but we'll probably just miss out with both 😭

Draft write-ups have Weddle 20-30 but also note a lack of defenders means a good chance he'll go earlier. He also did really well at the combine

Weddle at pick 21 is what I hope for. I think Weddle will go ~pick 18…. So Clarke will still be there and we have to take him.

After that, our last pick should be a ruck, small forward, Binns or Philips (VFL KPD). Not much else excites me at that point.

Weddle isn’t a reach at 12. Hollands is the other one I like at that pick.
Philipou should be gone unfortunately and I don’t like taking ACL returners like George with this early a pick. Humphrey frequently takes the wrong options, so unless we think we can take that out of his game, then he would be a wasted pick.

Trading back:
Pick 12 and pick 22 for pick 15 & 17 from the Swans.
Pick 12 (plus 39 & F2) for picks 19&20 from GWS.

I think trading up this draft is going to be at a premium, as I see the pool as shallow and I think clubs do too.

Ideally you want a player who can play 2023 OR become a top line KPP for a first round pick.

I don’t see many players in this pool as being able to do that. At Pick 12, there are probably 8 left that could:
Weddle
Hollands
Clarke
Konstanty
Hewitt
Hayes
Gruzewski
Cowan
(Fletcher)
(Davey)

At pick 24 (3 FS gone by then), I can only see Clarke maybe being on the board. The pick is just slightly too late for my liking…. About 3 picks too late.

Which is why I am still super mad with the Lions and their selfishness.

11-20 is the range that everyone gets wrong in phantoms etc because the boards change dramatically, especially in bad drafts. Wouldn't be looking to phantoms to tell if someone is a reach at 11 or not. Lots of guys get taken in that range when they're consensus 30+ picks on the internet.

Weddle being looked at by the Swans. Don’t know with what pick but he’s their type of player.
Probably the 2 biggest busts in Dalrymple's otherwise top notch career have been solidly built undersized kpds; Kieran Collins and Will Gould.

Would be ballsy of him to go for a 3rd one in that top 25 range.

Weddle isn’t slow…. Those other two are.
I think he learnt his lesson and will make the right call.

I can't see Weddle making it past Sydney's second pick. Obviously if he's there at 21 then we jump on him but he's got the athletic qualities that Collins and Gould lacked which means that him being undersized won't matter anywhere near as much.

Only a slight reach and is an incredible list fit so I personally would be ok if Sammy pulled the trigger at 12

More 'contested' style of play too. He's not 'just a defender', he seems to really hate being beaten. That's a good sign.

If Phillipou isn't there at 11 then I'd try and see if Sydney would take 11 and something for 14 and 19. Use those picks to take Charlie Clarke and Weddle and that would be a really good move. Preferably we'd keep 21 and part with the 2023 f2, three hits in the top 25 is big.

Might depend on the sliders. If we get word that clubs are gun-shy on George, I'd pull the trigger on him at 14. The risk/reward factor for him is outstanding.
