Once the draft opens, they can trade out any pick for multiple picks. There are no requirements at that point to only have picks you have list spots.

There is nothing stopping North from trading up into those picks and Lions getting a pick surplus back. It’s what they will do on draft night.
I’m pretty sure that loophole has been closed.

Lots of Lions fans think that it hasn’t. Many Phantom drafts appear to have traded out these picks too….

I am hoping it has been changed but that may not be the case.
The requirement was suspended for two years (luckily, one of those years was the Marra draft).
You can have as many picks as you want, but for matching NGA/FS bids the rule has gone back to only using picks that correspond with free list spots.

They may be getting confused because after a bid is matched you can trade back into the draft (the Swans famously exploited that loophole a few years ago with a West Coast Eagles pick swap)

So if they have say 5 spots available they could use 5 picks for Ashcroft then 4 picks for Fletcher. That would make a significant difference compared to needing 9 spots for both.

Using your example:
The Lions can trade the picks for more points but can only use 5 picks at a time. They could on trade night for example, trade pick 32 for day pick 40 & 41. Use the pick 40 for the first FS and the pick 41 for the second FS.

My understanding is the rules for this year run like this:

Picks are used up sequentially so if Ashcroft gets a bid at pick one, Brisbane get to match but if they have 5 list spots open, their first 5 picks will be used up to and including the total value of that pick minus a 20% discount (subject to pick trading).
They can trade picks after the bid, but their first 5 picks will be allocated (if needed). After that a deficit will be applied to their first pick in 2023 (currently a 2nd rounder).

Brisbane can trade back into the early part of the draft at that point, but they will likely then have to account for a bid on Jaspa Fletcher (e.g. pick 15ish is his range). Any picks vs list spots not used on the first (Ashcroft) bid can be used to make up points for Fletcher, with any deficit applied to Brisbane's first pick in 2023 (currently a 2nd rounder). If the deficit is greater than the value of thier first pick, the points come off their next pick, and so on.

In the above example Brisbane still have 3 open list spots to draft players in, and if they wish they can trade one (or more) of those picks back up the order this year after the bidding process is complete.

This feels like the makings of a draft that will piss you off. Where you want said player or so at our next pick, and someone takes them the pick before. So far from everything I have seen about our links for around Pick 21.

Dogs need a defender. Pies are now said to be interested in Hayes before our pick.
Dogs apparently into Clarke. Next minute GWS are apparently keen on him, have picks before us.
Dogs really keen on George. Next minute West Coast are also apparently into him with the pick before ours.

Wonder who we get linked to next, that will quickly be followed by a rumoured interest by a team ahead of us?

I'm a fan, but serious question, why wasn't Ethan Phillips considered by any team in the mid season draft?

Did he nominate? I've looked at all the articles and Phantoms and his name doesn't feature?

WC have multiple WA players rated about 20. No way do they pass on those guys for George. WC can pay WA players less and have found it difficult to get WA players home IF they passed on them at the draft.

A lot of his AFL level games came after the mid-season draft

I feel with both our first picks we end up with the last left of the consensus groupings , it seems Busslinger will be the one at our first and any of weddle Clarke george hayes at our second,

Im happy with this, id even be happy with Busslinger and barnett, i even prefer barnett to any in that second group, then we dont need to think about a ruckman for the next ten years

Seriously folks, we need to chill. How often do the pundits get the whole top 10 right?
The first five or six yes, you'd expect a high success rate but it gets very iffy after that. And once one club departs from the predicted script it ripples right through the draft - because of sliders.

Lots of clubs will play their draft cards close to their chest so the only thing we should be fairly sure of is a few surprises.

Que sera ... sera. We'll get somebody good.

It’s the Bulldog way, to worry ourselves sick about something that hasn’t happened yet, is unlikely to happen and won’t happen. We are just not a confident supporter base.

This draft is pretty open after the first 4-5 selections so at a guess, first round predictions will be even less accurate this year.
Even Tsitas - a top 4 consensus pick - looks like he'd slide back a fair bit.

I'd still be very comfortable with pulling the trigger on George at pick 11, and I expect I'm in the minority there.

We should get a very good player at 12. Our first rounders have all been hits for quite a few years now. I’m more hesitant about 21 and 39.
I wouldn't be surprised if we trade 21 to Adelaide for a future second

We will be upgrading khamis and sweet which would count towards the minimum of 3 selections.
"Live" selections - Khamis and Sweet aren't included in the three.

Milesi confirmed we’re taking three picks plus upgrading those two
I do remember hearing that. I do expect a shuffling of picks in some aspect though next years draft is looking to be the best since the B.smith draft

I wouldn't hate it, he's probably in the 12-13 players I could get behind at pick 11
