Whilst I’d love to trade for experienced players, the thought of taking one of 8/11 to the draft and splitting the other for two later firsts is sounding pretty enticing, could really fill some holes
Go on then, give us your 3 selections for the first round…

What about Lions first this year plus next? Gives us 2 firsts this year and 2 firsts next year (maybe to offer to GWS for Callaghan)

Would you take Ginbey at 8 if we got it from Port?
I suspect the position there is we take Ginbey with our pick #12 and pick #9 (post Ashcroft) was traded for 2 x later picks which allow us to take Hayes and Weedle. I would hold pick #9 to draft night to see if Busslinger gets to that pick. If he does then I'd gladly take Busslinger at pick #9 and Ginbey at pick #12 and if Busslinger is gone then move down to try to get Hayes plus extra (pick #12 a reach for Hayes).

If we did the trade with Brisbane for this year and next years first you probably miss out on Weedle but have a first rounder next year - which I think I prefer to the Ginbey, Hayes, Weedle combination especially given Weedle might even slide to our 2nd rounder.

I don’t know the draft this year tbh 😂

But I agree hold the top pick til draft night to see if Buss is there and if not happy to downgrade and take say Hayes & Konstanty or similar. A mix of Key defender, forward & Mid would be loveeely with Lobb & Jones as experience

I’d prefer Brissy got us two picks this year as their pick next year will be pretty shit but supposedly a strong draft so might be best we can ask for? Still holding out hope for sports pick 8 though

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Draft Picks: 11, 29, 37, 65, 83
List needs:
Key defender, key forward, ruckman
Who could be available at first pick:
Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Matthew Jefferson

The Bulldogs are well-stocked with midfielders and smaller players, but would be looking to add some key position players to their list for the short-term and long-term in this year’s draft.

West Australian key defender Jedd Busslinger will be in the mix for the Bulldogs’ first pick, as could be exciting South Australian midfielder-forward Mattaes Phillipou. Busslinger is a 196cm intercepting defender while Phillipou is the son of Sam Phillipou, who played three games for Footscray in 1995. Oakleigh Chargers key forward Matthew Jefferson could also come into consideration if he slides outside the top-10. The Bulldogs only have two ruckman on their list in Tim English (25) and Jordan Sweet (24), so may also be on the lookout for a young big man to develop, although Rory Lobb’s expected recruitment will give them cover there in the coming years.

Latest moves: Expect the Bulldogs to land former Western Bulldogs and Carlton defender Liam Jones as a free agent, who is allowed back in the competition after being forced out of the Blues due to Covid-19 vaccine mandates. The Bulldogs are also poised to land Fremantle forward-ruckman Rory Lobb, who will help boost the other end.

I am praying we don't get another bunch of 185-190cm "utilities" and actually draft some genuine KPP to develop

Who are the main candidates in the picks above us to want to take a KPD in Busslinger vs other needs - and I get some will just say “best available” but can we just put that to the side for a moment.

at around our pick I like Busslinger (obviously) and if he's gone Philipou or Ginbey would be great. If we have Brisbane's pick and we missed Busslinger I'd prioritise Hayes for that late first rounder. Would be slightly worried these tall backs are both going to go earlier than predicted though. They're proving rare commodities and a lot of teams are looking for them.

Hopefully Bevo will have less input in the recruitment of mature age battling vfl midfielders and we rookie a couple of project type key defenders. Nothing against Sullivan but he is not a need.

Skillful outside midfielders with speed is another need. i am confident when West builds up his tank he will become an A grader. His skills are surprisingly better than most in our team, hits targets and weights the ball well on both feet. His hands are elite as well as his agility and strength. Garcia and Smith can also play inside so we are still well stocked for next few years.

Not many of the elite key defenders are high picks so hopefully we invest heavily with our later picks in this area.

Would you prefer Garner instead?

I’d prefer neither but Garner’s game much more likely to translate to AFL at an acceptable standard than Sullivan.

If Sullivan gets picked up what odds do you give him being on the list in 2025?

Does Hayes have a late birthday? His rate of progression has been impressive.

I just watched Garner's highlights when he played for port. I have no idea why they delisted him but I guess it was simply behind so many others. He reads the ball and kicks so well at afl level.
