Busslinger is a bit slow. None of the others are necessarily the best field kicks.
Thanks. Collins vibes with Buss? I hope his nickname is The Bus.

A shame re: skills. We really do need a greater proportion of guys with nice footskills in the front half of the ground.

Thanks all. Assuming we don't go for Bus, how do things look for KPDs further down the order? Any state leaguers stand out as being worth a go?

The top four young key defenders would be

Busslinger
Weddle
Hayes
Van Es

There's also Ethan Phillips from Port Melbourne who won the Round-Forthergill-Mitchell medal for best young player in the VFL who would be a huge pick up for us.

Big no to trading our future 1st personally. Supposed to be a very good draft and while we still "should" be a top 8 team next year, a lot of other teams have improved and a bit of bad luck and we are trading say pick 7-9 in a loaded draft. May need that pick if we are targeting a big fish also, rather than just getting another pick in the teens for it this year.

Thanks. Looks like a couple of these guys will be around at our pick in the 20s. Maybe worth going a mid early.

Weddle is interesting as he’s not quite key size but you do get a more adventurous player who is willing to take the game on.

I'm not fussed about height. I feel we have an okay handle on tall key forwards these days. It's small forwards, wingers and resting mids that seem to screw us over big time goal wise. As long as he has the atheltic ability to play the medium and small roles like Morris did well, then he will be perfect. Doc cannot do it all alone.

Weddle is undersized at 192 but he's a competitive player with a great athletic profile who can also play against smaller forwards. I wouldn't be too worried about him giving up some height.

Bus is an intercepting third tall. With good kicking and may become a KPD. He has the height and his family are well built, so he should become a KPD but there are no guarantees.

Write up on Phillips.

He just turned 23. With his exposed form, I'd almost prioritise a mid with our early picks then snap him up. Some phantoms don’t have him going till 4th round, if at all, but with the scarcity of KPD, he may go early.

Interesting that he’s grown a couple inches since his draft year.

Ethan Phillips

Height: 196cm / 198cm??? Listed as both on various sites?

Weight: 90kg

D.O.B: 17-07-1999

Leagues: Vfl, NAB League Boys

STRENGTHS: Kicking, strength, play reading, footy smarts
IMPROVEMENTS: Vertical leap, speed

Phillips has had a breakout campaign for Port Melbourne, where he leads the VFL for intercepts per game (11.5) and intercept marks per game (5.1). Earlier in the year against the Northern Bullants, the 198cm key defender racked up a staggering 24 intercept possessions and 12 intercept marks in a single game. Borough coach Adam Skrobalak said Phillips’ marking and reading of the play is as good as he has seen in the VFL, and he has been able to maintain his intercept game while playing on AFL-listed forwards. Phillips’ athleticism and kicking are areas for improvement but with intercepting such a crucial part of the game and key defenders in short supply, Phillips shapes as a mature-age option who can make an impact right away.

I'll take 3

Having read the various scenarios, the one somewhat realistic one I like best is that GWS have a hard on for someone available at 11 on the night and offer us 15, 18 and 19 for 11 and 21.

3 picks in the top 20 and a 4th at 39, followed up with 2 1sts the year after would be a slick piece of list management.

Would be seriously tempted to nab Ethan Phillips with 19.

Weddle is more Dale Morris size but might be considered with our pick 11. Beat Cadman who probably goes no 1.
Ethan Phillips if we want a state league prospect who can 'do a job' (I'd be comfortable with our pick 39 being used)

Not really enthused by KPD prospects this year. Busslinger doesn't take the no 1 opposition forward at u18 state level, he's not doing it at AFL and if we want a tall intercept defender - boy, do I have a Sam Darcy for you (read it better, more mobile, excellent skills for a 209.5cm player). Van Es has some fans but had a poor to ok champs.

TBH I think there's every chance The Swans do too. By rumour, they don't rate this draft so would trade up to 11 and trade out of other picks.
I suspect we take it to draft on the slim hope Phillipou falls to 11.

My overall hopes for the draft are:

Pick 11: Cameron Mackenzie
Pick 21: Bid on Davey JR - matched- Jaspa Fletcher Bid matched James Van Es
Pick 39: Max Gruzewski
Pick 69: Anthony Munkara

I'd be surprised if GWS did that trade but 11 for 18 and 19 is more feasible, perhaps with some future pick swaps.
That would still put us in a good range to get some good players who would fill list needs
