His numbers in the WAFL colts are pretty impressive but I’m not sure on the standard, I’d be keen on going back and watching his champs game which I’ll do at some stage.

He only played the last champs game and was pretty average. He was coming back from a stress fracture in his back, so hard to judge him based on that.

I haven't seen much of him either. U18 WAFL games are very hard to watch because the standard is pretty poor.

Yeah thought that’d be the case, would be a real potential pick then - maybe if we end up with an extra pick in the range then we could be a good club to take the risk; otherwise there will probably be safer picks at 21

Some articles from the state combine. Not a heap of info that I could find.

Baxter Phillip did super well, there's a lot of upside with him.

South Fremantle mature-aged prospect Toby McQuilkin has credited a training stint at West Coast for his career-best season after boosting his draft credentials with an impressive combine on Sunday.

The 21-year-old blitzed the agility test with a time of 7.8 seconds, equal-fourth fastest in history, while also winning the 2km time trial (6:40) by one second ahead of Perth midfielder Baxter Philip (6:41) with Claremont’s Conrad Williams (6:42) in third.

McQuilkin, who finished second in the Bulldogs’ WJ Hughes Medal count on Friday night, was the oldest of the 12 West Aussies invited to the state combine and made the most of his first opportunity to test in front of AFL recruiters.

The medium-sized defender said the Eagles had given him a couple of things to work on after he was overlooked for a rookie spot as part of the pre-season supplementary selection period - and that’s exactly what he did.

“It was probably more the strength side of things,” McQuilkin told The West Australian.

“I’m lean built so just to put a few kegs on, and just my 2km time trial as well, I tried to drop that down a fair bit but that were two of the main points.

“After the season I’ve been smashing the workouts so hopefully it shows in my 2km.”

McQuilkin said he had learned a lot from his time at West Coast which helped him take his game to another level this year as he looks to become the latest mature-aged success story from South Fremantle after Tim Kelly, Marlion Pickett and Matty Parker.

“It was a bloody good experience, I’ll tell you that for free,” McQuilkin said.

“Just to get in the system and see what those blokes do on a day-to-day basis gives me the confidence to say ‘I can be there and I can do that’.

“It showed me what the big dogs do, and what workload they put in and if I just head down, tail up and just work hard I’ll back myself at training.

“Obviously I was overlooked but I felt like I had a pretty consistent year. I’m just taking everything as it comes and whatever happens, happens.”

McQuilkin said there wasn’t “a hell of a lot” of AFL interest, but hopes that will change after his combine result.

“Not a hell of a lot but there’s little talks here and there and being a mature-ager there’s not too much coming up to this but hopefully there’s a couple of little talks after this,” he said.

Only nine of the 12 players invited took part in the physical testing with West Perth colts captain Kane Bevan (ankle), his teammate Jasper Scaife (foot) and Perth midfielder Connor McDonald (back) sitting out.

East Fremantle utility Kaleb Smith topped the 20m sprint with a blistering time of 2.888 seconds, edging out Philip (2.911) and Fremantle Next Generation Academy talent Williams (2.986).

Hello, our board has a rumour you guys want to swap 11, Brisbane's 2023r1 for 5 to get Jyhe Clarke? Do you think this is true?

I doubt it. We'd still be able to get a good mid at 11 if we want one, potentially a Phillipou or Hollands, or Busslinger. I've seen talk about some clubs wanting to trade up into the top 6, but not us. Can't imagine us trading up and paying big for a short mid.

Jeez, that Baxter kid has a fair athletic profile. How are his skills and size?

He plays a bit all over, half back, forward, wing. Pretty good skills, I rate him. Played some WAFL senior footy this year. Will take a while though as he is very skinny. He's currently listed at 181cm and 61kg. He doesn't get a huge amount of ball at this stage.

Kyle Marshall also did ok in the combine. 198cm, Key defender. I would be ok if we took a punt on him in the rookie draft. He's a bit more of a traditional style defender, but he has also shown he can intercept.

I wonder what GC could be dumb enough to trade us pick 5 for? Theyd prefer picks next year by the looks of things - could they be silly enough to trade us for a F1 & 21 or F2?

I’d definitely be asking the question they seem hellbent on destroying themselves 😂

Who would we even take at 5 I wonder, definitely wouldn’t be Clark. I really do think we want another pick this year, whether that’s trading back into the draft or splitting a pick I’m not sure but I reckon we have something in mind

Would be way better off splitting our pick 11 than trying to move up. 18, 19, 21 could be really good.

I know it seems that way based on highly positive phantoms etc...but the word is that almost every club is trying to move up and nobody is biting. It's not a good sign.

You would think that the offers will increase closer to the draft.

I worry that the better performed players this year were just average because the rest were below average. It appears that the clubs think that way too, otherwise we would have had more pick swaps done by now.

I wonder how much this year's crop has been impacted by 2 years of minimal footy through COVID.

Is this a poor crop, or are these kids just a little less developed than other years?

Maybe recruiters are less confident because they have a smaller body of work from which to assess and rank the talent?

Reckon there will prove to be a few diamonds in the rough. Will be a good test of the recruiters' skill

I’m not sure players like Hewett, Hotton and Hollands would crack the first round most years.

For example, are those guys projecting to be better than Robertson, Sharp or Rivers were before the draft in 2019? They all went second round, pick 22 and after.

Hollands Is the only of those three I would see going first round.

Highly improbable. We'd want to sack Sam Power if he did that.
That's not our typical MO anyway. Especially after hollowing out our draft hand the last two years to get Ugle-Hagan and Darcy. If it's at all possible we would like a good spread of picks in the 10-25 range so we would be more likely to split our pick 11 than to trade up into the top 10.

Besides haven't Gold Coast got that pick 5? If anybody should be giving them charity right now I reckon it should be the Cats. They would have been giggling with glee over that crazy Bowes deal.

Goldcoast could be running after Hollands and pick 5 is a big stretch of getting him there when he's rated at dogs pick. I bet if gets them more future picks they'll do a deal with around his range. But I agree 11 and F1 is overs for dogs even if they want Jhye when they can get hollands and another player next year.

Would be pretty surprising if we’d trade up to take Clark. Could understand if we’d want to trade into 5 if Clark is already taken, leaving one of Tsatas or Sheezel available. But would North or Essendon really take him ahead of either of those two? And presumably wouldn’t GC rather take one of them?
