I’m warming up to Jefferson. He has played as a defender at times up until this year. So there’s possibility for that switch.
He’s such a smooth mover, reads the game well, good leap and is a threat in the air.

If we are going best available, he may just be it.

I asked the question this week to PMB on his draft thread as was thinking similarly.

Question: how stupid an idea would it be to select Jefferson with a view to developing him as a defender? Appreciate you’ll view that he’ll have more upside as a forward but what about as a comparison to reaching for Weddle or Hayes ahead of him?

Answer: Id take Weddle or Busslinger if you're that keen for a KPD, even with Weddle a touch short I think he's the best of the bunch after Buss

When is the draft? Not for a while, is it? I don’t keep up with these things, sorry ☺️.

In Smythe's draft thread a Saints poster asked if Jefferson could become a KPD
So it's obviously on a few people's minds, liked what I saw of him in the Champs game had a very good ground game for a tall.
Wouldn't be disappointed if available at 11 if we took him, with a view to develop him as a Defender

Think his skill set would translate really well as a defender. I read he was planning on working on his intercept marking as a defender this year however he then was played solely forward.

Hate the idea of taking Jefferson as a defender just so because we feel like we have to grab a player who is a consensus early teens pick.

There are 4 players ahead of him as far as runs on the board as a key defender and I’d be taking any one of them before Jefferson.
Agree, I’d “reach” for Hayes before Jefferson if we want a defender. The club will just go best available player though.

I could see Jefferson’s versatility appealing to us. He’s played forward (and has shown elite traits) as well as abit of back / wing previously.

But all depends where these players are on our draft board, as we’ve stated we’ll go best available regardless.

I’m almost certain we will take Jefferson.
He screams John Butcher to me

Was sold on us taking a defender early on, but now think we’ll take midfielders with our first 2 picks and best available defender with our 3rd.

Best available mids at 11 and 21. Ed Allen looks like a sneaky draft riser. Having a look at some footage, has a bit of Bont about him. Can play tall, inside and out etc. Would be a good get at 21.

Phillips could be the defender at 39. Does anyone know what his draft position is likely to be?

Two mids with our first two picks seems really risky to me. I understand patching future needs but that'd just be ignoring our current list holes, and focusing on midfield without fixing issues elsewhere has been the cause of our finals losses.
On the flip side, McComb played 15 games last season despite having Dunkley, and Libba/McLean/Treloar could break at any moment. This board loves West and Garcia but there is 0 evidence that either can play mid at AFL level.

We have a need to fill both positions with youngsters, so best available is fine. If it's two mids, so be it. A drafted KPD is unlikely to change our fortunes down back for some time anyway.

Ed Allen at 21 also a huge reach. Using a high pick on someone who blitzed the combine but hasn't shown much in terms of actual footy is worrying.

Bont didn’t show a lot in his draft year. His numbers and contested work were poor. His late rise was because of his huge potential.
Allen not on Bonts level, but you can see the talent’s there.

If we don’t move on midfielders this year or next, it’ll come to the point we’re we have an ageing midfield at late 20’s, early 30’s and the next bunch are 18/19 year olds. That’s bad list managment. I just don’t see us not taking at least one mid with our first two picks. I personally see us taking two.

You can say the same for our defenders, but historically, defenders are taken with later picks, or specifically in our case, brought in via trade.

2 mids, 1 defender is how I see it playing out. Defender with a later pick. Or... possibly a Weddle type at 21 if he’s still there.

I'd be hoping for a mid, a defender, and a small forward. All on board with bringing in a good mid with our first or second pick, but both feels wasteful, and I'd really want to be spending a high pick on someone who we know can play footy rather than being blinded by testing numbers. Allen has pace in a straight 20m but you can't see it in his game and if that's what we're drafting on it feels likely to be a bust.

A recent draft pick I'm thinking of is Riley Collier-Dawkins. Went at pick 20 on potential. "Could be anything". Turned out the anything he became was "not very good". Surely there's someone with exposed form at that high a pick.
