You could nearly throw a blanket over 15 players such is the evenness of the draft beyond the top 5.
I rate Jones inside the top ten and he will only fall due to height.
We need speed skills and ball movement which is thankfully available this year.
We also need lockdown defenders both tall and small.
I would want to grab the slider with our top pick. (I don't rate buss that highly)
If philipou (dunkley replacement) is taken earlier and there is no other obvious slider I wouldn't mind "reaching" for Jones (wing/HF) but would ideally get him at 21
I'd target a tall with our last pick as I rate them just as highly as the ones that'd go earlier. Philips and Van Es.
Other players of interest with question marks only recruiters could answer are Hewett (flight risk), Allan (best position/ ability to apply his athleticism), weddle (play tall or small), cowan (lockdown ability), Teal(exposed form).

Yer it’s a hard draft to predict.

Im also hoping Carlton don’t choose hollands

Hollands and jones = wings sorted

Id be pretty stoked with Holland, Jones/Allan & Van es with our picks. As you mentioned wings sorted (which I think is such a huge weakness for us currently) and at least one key defender to develop

Something tells me though that we shouldn’t also pass up on Hewett.

The write up on him mentions to take more notice of his late state form against the mature bodies as compared to the underage 18’s.

I have this gut feel that we will trade for a additional first round pick.

Holland/Philipou/George
+
Hewett
+
Jones

Who will be able to stop the run and carry in the side with Smith, Holland, Hewett, Jones, Dale, Treloar (Hewett will replace him in time) and Richards??

Anyone who gets it into our backline.

I'd love to get another early 20s pick in.
Phillipou
Jones/hewett
Weddle
Philips/Van Es
It'd pretty much cover all bases

You still don’t get it.

Due to our inability to hit up forwards constantly (thanks to Mcoumb, Rourke Smith etc playing on wings) means that opposition teams rebound it at will against us, which means that our defense is in a very difficult position.

It doesn’t matter who we play in our defense when the ball is rebounded out of our forward line at will.

So with this in mind, in addition to fixing our wing position, the next priority should be pressure small forwards, so that we can KEEP it near our goals, which is the BEST form of defense….

Why even have defenders on the list then, I guess? All we gotta do is stock up on wingers and forwards and the ball will never even go into our backline. Premiership won.

It doesn’t matter who we play in our defense when the ball is rebounded out of our forward line at will.

It does matter because in every game, no matter how well we play, we will eventually lose momentum, and having a defence that competently deal with the ball coming in at a rate of knots can only be a good thing for our performance overall.

I do agree with your overall premise that our ball movement, speed and inability to keep the ball locked in our forward 50 is our biggest weakness, but it's not our only weakness, by any means. And the fact is we have no idea what level either Keath or Jones will be playing at in 2023, let alone beyond that, and without them we literally only have Gardner and O'Brien.

Hewett isn't what I'd call a model of effective delivery inside 50.

Isn’t Hewett considered a flight risk hence the slide?

Regardless doubt he gets past WC second rounder. That’s before ours.

Do we need a medium forward?
We draft for talent in the first round, not needs.
Where a player starts their career may not be where he finishes it anyway

It’s 2024. George and Weightman fly for the same mark, spoiling both each other and Naughton. Repeat ad nauseum.
Too bad we took those flankers Bontempelli and Macrae then...

Don’t get me wrong, George could become a really good player, and I wouldn’t be against taking him if he’s around at our second rounder. But I’m very cautious that his repeat major knee injuries could have hobbled one of his biggest attributes in his speed, and I think taking a marking forward who’s coming off an ACL with a first rounder is a lot more risk than reward. If he recovers fully, retains his speed, and transitions to the midfield, he’d be worth that pick in hindsight, but when we have major holes in our side that could be filled with that pick with much less risk, I wouldn’t like to see us take that gamble.

Of course we still need to have a sound back line!!

My point was that ANY teams defense in the comp would struggle if the opposition kept rebounding out of their forward line.

You watch how Geelong continuously either spots up their forwards, or locks the ball in the forward half….therefore ensuring their defenders aren’t caught out of position and made to look silly.

Since last season Geelong realized that it’s speed of ball movement in forward half that helps this happen!

You watch how much better our defenders will look if we improve our efficiency going into the forward line….

It’s also not as if we haven’t done anything so far for our back end, we have brought in Liam Jones.
- in terms of draft assets, I wouldn’t be using high draft picks for the back line as well, since historically it’s proven that defenders can be found late in draft….

Was just listening to the Herald Sun Footy podcast 22:49 mark they said we are fans of Max Michalanney

Makes sense, from what I've heard you put him on a forward and that forward's influence stops.

Place a Bid at 23 make the crows pay full price on the kid

Honestly I'd bid on all of Fletcher, Michelanney, and Davey if they were there at our second pick.. Screw Brisbane for the Dunkley trade, screw Adelaide for bidding on JUH at pick 1, screw Essendon just because.

If we get another pick in the teens I'd look at a Fletcher bid there anyway - wing is a position of need and it would be close to his range
