I think we just need best available. Key defenders and silky outside-leaning types should get a bonus in their draft board placement, but then I would stay faithful to the board. Aside from key forwards, there isn't really a position that we're overstocked in.
Id say we're well stocked for inside mids. We have treloar, B.smith, West, McLean and garcia playing on the flanks/wings we've even seen bont libba and macrea moved around at stages.

I wouldn't mind one to develop. West, Garcia, and McLean are all small, one more big-bodied mid developing in the twos wouldn't be a bad thing. Not a high priority though.

In terms of the name tall defenders in the draft, he seems like the rawest of them all but his combine results mean that he has a ton of potential.
Kyle Marshall would be the rawest and projects as a project rookie pick. Some scope to ruck, SA Combine results were outstanding. If we miss out on a KPD in the regular draft I hope we pick up him (or someone similar)

Some of the first round projected kids who have played forward a fair bit we may consider (e.g. Phillipou, George) also have midfield scope as well

I don't think West or Garcia ever make that leap. Treloar is in the latter stages of his career, has a disgusting injury history, and without knowing him personally I think it's fair to say that footy isn't everything to him and he could pull up stumps at any stage. McLean is an unknown until he puts together a string of AFL form. I wouldn't be at all disappointed to take an inside mid.

Interesting take on West Dannnnnnnnn, I think many see him progressing or hopefully progressing into the midfield at some point? I have concerns around his fitness/work rate at times but do believe he has the chops. What is it that concerns you?

One of the most important skills for an inside mid is consistency. You have to stay in the game at all times. From contest to contest you have to be consistent, and if you're not hunting the ball you need to be minding and following your man. Other positions on the ground are more forgiving, but inside mids need to back up again and again and again. There is both a physical component to this (i.e., supreme fitness) and a mental one (i.e., being locked in and keeping that focus all game).

For mine, West really struggles with both elements of this. His effort from contest to contest and game to game is really inconsistent. His off-the-ball minding of his opponent is hit or miss. His tackling pressure comes and goes. Sometimes he gets to the drop of the ball really well and other times he is way out of position. I don't know what goes on within the four walls of the club, but my guess is that this is what saw him dropped, and what explains the discrepancy between the way the coaches seem to rate him and how many on here rate him.

When you add to this his athletic and skill limitations and the fact that he has at times been a bit of a ball hog, there are significant question marks for mine on how well he can play that role at AFL level.

Full disclosure, I have never been a huge West fan. His forward play this year really surprised me - I didn't think he had that in him. Fingers crossed that he continues to prove me wrong. At any rate, though, I don't think we have enough evidence of the contrary for it to stop us picking an inside mid. I've said this before, but fans (myself included) are diabolically bad at projecting ahead what a team needs years in advance. We all melted when we picked Naughton because we had too many key defenders - that did not go well.

Guys like Phillipou and at a lower pick George I'd be more then happy to pick up and develop given they have genuine ability in other positions.
I wish Ginbey would slide to us. Would play in our back line round 1, and has real defensive nous whether he's a defender or mid.
Ginbey worries me. He is very physically developed and appears to me that he mainly dominated for that reason. Not sure he has many more steps in his development.

Great take Dannnn..... I felt the same and just thought it was due to fitness however I do believe there's an element of laziness involved as well. I think he took huge steps this season and showed just how impactful he can be when he's firing on all cylinders albeit as a small forward. I think he's matured and not so selfish anymore, just hope he busts a gut over the preseaon and takes another step.

Tom McCallum

Key defender, Tasmania Devils/Allies
Draft range: 25-50
The lack of quality talls in the pool could see McCallum off the board inside the second round, which would have been out of the question before the national championships. A late inclusion in the first match for the Allies, the Tasmanian hauled in three intercept marks against South Australia – and it didn’t stop there. The 192cm key defender finished the championships with the second-most intercept marks, with the carnival elevating his draft standing. McCallum didn’t test at the combine through injury but his speed and endurance allows him to match up on a variety of opponents, with his reading of the play and strong overhead marking his major strengths. The Clarence product has attracted a lot of interest from clubs, including Carlton, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs.

Bailey Macdonald

Defender, Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Draft range: 40+

It’s been a rapid rise for Macdonald, making his NAB League debut mid-year after a hot start to the school footy season for Wesley College. The 182cm halfback has line-breaking speed off the mark, which is no surprise given he has competed in 100m, long jump and triple jump at a national level. A rush of late interest earned him a call-up for Vic Metro late in the year, where he had just the 10 touches, but his electrifying run certainly caught the eye. Macdonald is also a pinpoint kick, going at an elite 90 per kicking efficiency in his four games for the Chargers. Macdonald has definite upside as a later draft selection or rookie pick and the Western Bulldogs, Sydney, Hawthorn, St Kilda and Richmond are in the mix.

Could always do with another Bailey, but a running half back wouldn’t be what I’d call a list need.

I want. Sounds like a shorter version of Easton Wood. Or maybe another JJ. Athletic, fast, can jump, line breaker, and above all he’s a great kick.
Who wouldn’t want another JJ? How often have we complained about delivery i50?

Especially if we can get him with a late pick.
The Bailey bit just seals the deal.

Could we shuffle him slightly forward onto a wing ?? Speed and delivery I50 would be nice - and we could certainly get the ball to him !!

He gets it 10 times a game, we may as well stick with Williams
We rookied JJ who averaged less.
Honeychurch averaged more touches than Bontempelli at u18 level.

Stats don't tell the full story, even less so for draftees.

By small defender I assume you mean someone with pace who can take a small forward like Charlie Cameron, Toby Greene, Tom Papley?
Most pressing needs are a genuine wing and small forward IMO. Wing was a need before Lachie Hunter went to melbourne. Williams could develop but with Dunkley leaving Bailey Smith will need more inside mid minutes and the need for a someone to run hard all day, a lot of the time unrewarded to give us an outlet and spread the opponents.

Small pressure forward to lock the ball in and is still handy for a goal or two a game. Not suggesting that these need to be met by pick 11 however.

Other needs that are less pressing are developing key defender (can trade for an established one), developing hybrid defender capable of taking smalls and talls who is athletically elite and can distribute effectively (Josh Weddle)

Appreciate an inside mid will be needed in 3 years or so. Not against it if wing and small forward are also taken care of
