Wingman and small defender are the biggest needs for mine

I have wingman & small forward as top two, then small defender prior to KPD.

I know others have KPD as top need but I have decided that the others are more important for the next two years.

I hope we draft a KPD but would be happy to get one late draft or rookie draft.

In two years, most likely, the only KPD on our list will be Gardner. Do we want Jones and Keath to be replaced by a skinny kid we draft at the end of 2024 when there’s literally nobody else on our list to play the role, or someone we’ve been developing for two years? I’m not counting on us attracting anyone in a trade period. We’re not a destination club.

Now list our small defenders once Doc is done

I'm all for picking up a key defender to develope. Just don't want to blow pick 12 on one

Bailey MacDonald does look good. Some of his runs in the champs decider was JJ like.

I’ve seen him listed as wingman / defender so probably has the ability to roll onto the wing as well.

There's a lot of reasons I'd prioritise a KPD over a small defender
  • KPDs take longer to develop. We can draft a tall this year and a small defender in two years and have them both develop into AFL level at the same time.
  • Small defenders are easier to find. They can be traded pretty cheaply, picked up at VFL level, or sometimes transition a midfielder into one.
  • Small defenders aren't as structurally important. Key forwards are almost always the biggest goal threat, and even in the teams where they aren't getting someone to mark the ball before it can hit the ground is easier than shutting down a small 1v1.
  • It's easier for a taller player to shut down a small than it is for a smaller player to shut down a tall. If a smalls main threats are ground level skills and pace, a medium sized defender can often be just as fast and have almost as good ground skills. We've done alright with Crozier and Williams playing on dangerous smalls before.

Yes but we need q lockdown small now. We had hannan and Scott playing as lockdown smalls this year and it wasn't pretty.

I'm with you.
Unlike most other drafts I think we need to prioritise the immediate future and there is a glaring deficiency in those wing and small forward roles which could feasibly be addressed in this draft.
In most years a prospect like Hollands would have me yawning, but he could realistically contribute to our 2023 flag hopes.

I would love to know what the clubs plan is for the wings next year. Are they bullish on Bedendo? Is there a role switch on the cards? Is there a DFA we are looking at?
We have gone from one genuine winner to zero so something has to happen.

“Prioritise right now at the expense of the future” reminds me a lot of the poster who was determined that we not match the bid on Sam Darcy because he wouldn’t help us win the 2022 flag. Hugely short-sighted.
Same argument could be applied to you advocating for us reaching for a KPD in a draft completely lacking quality talls.

...reminds me of Geelong...

I agree we need a smaller defender more than a tall lumbering one or tall intercept defender. A few good defenders in the more medium 185cm - 194cm range.

1. Small players are the ones who wrecked us big time in many games, including the grand final, for the most part in recent months. We shut Geelongs game down in the first quarter down at the Cattery. So they flipped the game plan and pulled the bigger players out of the forward arc at times, and let their small mids and forwards run us off our feet over the back when we turned it over. How many times did we see small players standing all by themselves when Melbourne toyed with us in the Grand Final? We are very slow on our feet down back for the most part.

2. We are stacked with talls right now. It is inevitable that one of the forward hybrids will drop back this year. Naughton, Lobb and Jamarra will be up front. Which leaves Darcy sweeping the back, and if Bruce becomes hot again, we may end up with Naughton down the back as well. So even if we drafted a tall, they are not getting a game or covering an instant need. We need that hybrid medium sized defender with reasonable athleticism that can play on both smalls and taller players like Morris did.

When Doc goes down, we are pretty much effed. Crozier has lost a step, Dale doesn't defend that well, Richards works hard, but he pushes up the field when we attack and isn't a defence first role like Doc does. Keath if freed of a man can revert to his intercept role he did well at Adelaide, Darcy can intercept, Naughton can too, English has done okay when dropped back to help defend. It is the smaller types we need help shutting down with.

Hence the probable rumors of us bidding on Max Michalanney. Throw in Weddle and Van E's. I would pick them all ahead of Busslinger and Hayes if all were available to be picked.

So who’s that pick 12 elite small defender?
Ideally I would go wingman with our first or a genuine slider (always best available first round) luckily plenty fit the bill. Then a weddle/phillips/van es the next 2. Another key defender and a small forward as Rookies.
No reason we can't fill all our needs whilst still going best available.

Lot more sensible than "there are literally zero key defenders worth taking in this year's draft and years beyond 2023 don't exist". It's not like I'm calling for us to get five key defenders with our five list spots. I'm saying that it's a big hole on our list that we need to finally address after four years of ignoring. I don't get why that makes me some short-sighted ignoramus.
