Yes but we need q lockdown small now. We had hannan and Scott playing as lockdown smalls this year and it wasn't pretty.

In the combined 12 games they played as lockdown smalls, an opposition small kicked more than a tall in 4. Win/loss was 50/50 in those games. So overall you can say a small defender may have cost us 2 games (Brisbane and Sydney). Compared to Curnow, Cameron, Walker, Lobb, Lynch all being the difference in games we lost this year, I don't see it as a major problem.

I don't believe that there's an objective ranking of best available and taking the player objectively ranked 15 instead of the one ranked 12 is a waste. Every team is different. If Matthew Jefferson was considered objectively best available at our 12, would we take him? Or would he not be the best for us, specifically, in our team?

A fair chunk of the leagues best and current defenders were not picked early. Some were even rookies. A few taken early have not lived up to expectations despite being talked up leading to the draft. McAsey, Gould, DGB (he is not a bust, but has not set world on fire) as a couple of more recent ones as examples. I'm sure many of us here wanted the Dogs to draft them if we could. Today we would be talking about who we should have drafted instead, and why we wasted a pick.

In this years draft crop, the forwards are pretty meh to be honest. They were mostly skinny bean poles that did not have anyone on the physical side to test them most weeks. None besides Cadman scream out potential elite AFL forward. So it is hard to get a good read on most of the defenders in this years draft given the lack of quality they faced. There is all odds on chance that many of the key defenders picked this year may not make the grade at AFL level.

We do not need to reach at any pick for one. We just need smart recruitment, like the Cats are able to pull off regularly. Below is where many of the best defenders in the AFL have been found pick wise.

May? Zone selection?
Ballard 42
Tom Stewart 40
Barass Pick 43
Jones 32 (solid one on one)
Collins 55
Ryan 66
Maynard 30
Grimes Pick 2 in Preseason draft
Andrews 61

Haynes, Weitering, Moore were picked high.

It shows that the majority of the leagues best defenders were picked after pick 30. There have been heaps of misses with defenders drafted inside the first round, compared to hits. Pick best available early, then go and find our own Tom Stewart.

As a team you need to back in your rankings. If Jefferson was best available you have to back in your rankings and take the player who you view has the best chance at making it. Luckily for us though with the addition of live trading there is also the chance Jefferson is also the clear best available for Melbourne and they offer something that will still allow us to take the player we rank at 15 who also happens to fill a need aswell as boosting our draft hand

Richards defensive ability has improved incredibly over the last twelve months. I’d be comfortable giving him the a more lockdown role when it’s needed.
No reason Clearly cannot play the attacking rebounder should we place Richards in a more defensive role. I still rate him.

This is a forum about opinions. Everybody is allowed to have one and no amount of yelling at someone else or belittling them and their opinion will change their mind. It is tedious and disrespectful to subject other forum members to these childish ... or should I say Trumpish... tantrums that some on here think is ok. It's not ok.

Are there rules about unnecessary and ham fisted political references?

If we went with a inside mid or Wing with our 1st selection. Who could we cut a deal with to get an early 30ish selection to pick up Van Es? And what would we need to give up on top of 39 a f4?

If you're the club seeking out a trade you always need to pay a premium. Probably costs a F3

Van Es looks a pretty solid KPD prospect from what I’ve seen.

Why is he going in the 30’s in a draft that looks to be pretty weak, especially on KPD?

A cursory glance at the draft, I would like us to get Phillopou, Hayes and Barnett.

We need players developing in the VFL, and Phillopou’s overhead marking is something we lack. We don’t want to be caught without a ruck going forward, and a developing Key defender to replace Jones/Keath later on.

Surely we couldn't be that tight? With performance incentives being an unknown amount, I doubt any club lets themselves get that close.
With the money we offered Josh Dunkley you would think we are not that tight. Jones wouldn’t be on much.

Cal twomey Has linked us to Ed Allen.

He said Geelong is considering him, with us and west coast a chance within first dozen selections.

His highlights don’t show much ability though.. but something to keep in mind.
