I think he still could have played the last 2-3 VFL games but played for Ballarat instead. Maybe to get finals eligible.

Probably, our season was dead and buried at that point so not much point bringing him back in with only a handful of games left.

So atm what are we predicting?

Pick 1, Brisbane - Ashcroft
Pick2, Giants - Cadman
Pick 3, Kangas - Sheezel
Pick 4, Kangas - Wardlaw
Pick 5, Bombers - Phillipou
Pick 6, Suns - Ginbey
Pick 7, Hawks - Humphrey
Pick 8, Geelong - Clark
Pick 9, West coast - Busslinger
Pick 10, Saints - Mackenzie
Pick 11, Carlton - Hollands
Pick 12, Bulldogs - Wait a minute.. Tsatas is available!!

I predict that something unexpected like this will end up happening.

I can see either Tsatas or Humphrey sliding..

I’d be staggered if Tsatas isn’t in the top 9.

Seems likely that we would take whoever may slide out of the expected top 10, but doesn’t it also seem likely that the 2 highest rated KPD’s will be gone by our next pick? Perhaps we would pull the trigger on Weddle if he was still available at our 2nd

Teams most likely to take Busslinger ahead of us at 12. Cats, Eagles and Blues. I would not rule him out of being on the Saints draft board either.

Before our pick 21, Collingwood has been talked up as an interested party in Hayes. And both Swans and GWS have two picks squeezed in there as well. Would not surprise me if Weddle is in consideration for either of them, or Hayes.

I feel if anyone will slip to us, it might be Weddle at this stage. I felt like it was more likely to be Hayes two weeks ago. But he seems to be getting a bit of talk and moving up the boards lately. Odds are against us to land any one of the three, so we will have wait and see what plays out.

I think I will be more invested in each teams picks before us, than our picks themselves. "Please don't pick him, please don't pick him" "Dammit, one pick before ours rages"

With rumors Adelaide might use their F1 to trade back in and get Phillipou if he slides. If he is there at our pick 12, and Adelaide offered their F1 for 12. Would anyone here take it?

Will leave us with 21 as our only decent pick this year, but give us three first round picks next year in a much stronger draft

I think he’ll be off the board by our pick anyway but I’d rather draft Phillipou vs. having Adelaide’s F1. Worth remembering Phillipou is super young and only qualifies for this years draft by 4 days or something.

If he was born 5 days later he’d be a consensus top 2-3 projection for next years crop and I don’t think you give that up for just a F1 (even if you’re banking on Crows being shit again).

I could be tempted by either their own F2 or the F2 tied to North being included along with us throwing in our F2 (which is tied to Brisbane).

FYI - this was PMBanger's answer (mid-October) to a relevant question in his draft thread:

Question: How does Phillipou compare to next years draft class ..especially for SA kids. Could someone like the Crows be interested to trade up to get him?

Answer: Very favourably, he'd sit in my top 5 for next year if he was in that class. The top SA prospect for next year in Ashton Moir is a similar sort of player imo with more class and is dual sided, but they'd be pretty close and Moir is sitting at Number 2 in 2023 for me. With the Crows willing to move Pick 5 for Rankine I think it's safe to assume they think there's alot of natural improvement for them next year, if they back that in then I think they'd be trying very hard to move up for Phillipou using that future first.

BF seems to have fallen off him but I’d be stoked, he’ll never hold down FB but we need all sorts of defenders and he’s best in the draft, with the view that Darcy goes forward post Lobb there’s a gaping hole for an interceptor at CHB and he looks like he’ll be an absolute gun in that role IMO

If we could potentially land Buss and Weddle we’ve set up our defence for years and our spine is looking bloody juicy, then hit the midfield hard next year and our list will be primed to peak together
Those two would be good to get, one plays like Grimes the other like Lever

coming around to the idea of Hewett at 11. Allen at 11 is an interesting prospect, probably the biggest gamble but could be the winger we are hoping for with real point of difference.

Who do people like out of Hollands / Allen?

With regards to weddle and hayes i would prefer weddle. My worry is that both get absorbed in those 5 picks from Sydney teams. Really hope we are trying to get gws pick 19 or Essendon 22.

Didn’t really explain myself about Hewett but he played with men all year. Tested elite for agility and strength and think his ‘’lack of consistency’ is a bit overrated. Seems like a ripping human too.

Afl website reminding us about the power and speed of Hewett!

Definitely love the way he plays. His highlights are the best from the players we can possibly grab with pick 12.

Some star players have been picked up later in the draft as “Steels of the draft” since they has attitude problems at the time.

It’s as much the flight risk back to WA than the chat about his attitude.

How’s he a consensus top 3 pick in a much stronger draft though if he’s only just a top 10 lock in this one? From all reports the top end this year sucks

I don’t know why everyone’s so worked up about future picks, I don’t want 3 picks next year - we should be trying to trade into this draft, we have a severe lack of young talent on the list which needs to be addressed sooner rather than later and this draft suits our needs to a tee

I could be wrong but my understanding is that the view that next years crop is better than this year is largely based on projected continued improvement rather than current levels. Somewhat similar to comparing how those kids are now vs how this years crop was 12 months ago. I don’t think it’s based on their actual performance levels to date - the U18 Champs and NAB League teams of the year were hardly dominated by the 2023 cohort.

I accept that in 12 months time you could argue that Phillipou is older than all the other kids and discount him based on that.

He also just qualified for this year's draft having a late December birthday.

I don't think the "best available" argument is particularly clear at our pick 12 this year. You could make an argument for half a dozen players at that spot. The margin between the options is going to be pretty slender, almost to the point where you could pick for need and still get someone that's arguably "best available" or near enough to it.

Yeah okay I getcha if we’re talking actual production levels that makes sense
