He's one I think could slid IF Geelong pick someone else. He's a gun but lacking burst/pace which is something I'm hoping for.

I'd take him purely for his combative nature. Something that as a club we don't have enough of and Libba is getting closer to the end. If he is there I would be all over him IMO

Claremont defender Hugh Davies has been tasked with tough asks down back, but offers value as a sound interceptor.

Davies has many of the attributes that clubs are looking for in the prototypical intercept defender. His best attribute is his ability to read the ball in flight and launch into a contest to impact, either through intercept marking or spoiling. He has good courage when flying for the ball and will often back himself to take the mark despite being the defensive player.

Davies does his best work as a higher defender, where he can roam up the field and get himself into a proactive position to intercept. A smart reader of the play, Davies is good at putting himself in a position where he is the loose man to chop off the incoming ball and springboard defence into attack. As a result of his aggressive positioning, Davies is also able to get involved offensively and is often the beneficiary of receiving a switch of play on the open side of the ground.

Davies is also an adept user of the football and is calm in a crisis, showing good composure when he has ball in hand under pressure deep in defence by opting to assess his options instead of just clearing the ball aimlessly. These traits help him accumulate good numbers for a key defender, having averaging 19 disposals for Claremont and having some games in the high twenties at school level.

While Davies is a damaging player when he can free himself higher up the ground, at this stage, he is more vulnerable when forced to defend one-on-one. In West Australian colours, with Jedd Busslinger the primary intercepter, Davies was forced to play a more accountable role on some of the country’s best key forwards. While he performed admirably against a high volume of entries and showed flashes of his intercepting skills, he showed he still has some work to do when forced to play back shoulder on a dangerous forward.

He would also look to add to his frame over the next few pre-seasons to get himself physically ready to matchup on the big forwards at senior level. Naturally, that would also lift his ability to compete in one-on-one tussles.

Would prefer Jed Adams

A strong and versatile key defender, Adams is one of many players who came into 2022 with limited exposure and impressed immensely. Level headed and a smart defender, Adams is just as important to his side off the field as he is on it. He has proven in 2022 that he can perform strongly as the lockdown defender taking on the most dangerous key forward on many occasions and shutting them down more often than not.

Averaging a tick over five marks per game, including a monster 11-mark outing early in the season, Adams took many impressive contested grabs. Though, his smarts to know when it’s best to forgo the mark and kill the ball with his fist or take his man out with good body use is one of his best assets.

His role as a leader and general in defence is one that is harder to catch if you’re not looking for it, but it’s importance cannot be understated. Be it the respect he has earned off the field as a person, or due to the merits of his own defending, he makes the calls when he needs his teammates to set up better and they listen - an under-appreciated role in the backline.

His ability to play as an intercept defender is perhaps overshadowed by his lockdown work, but it is not uncommon to see him leave his man and pluck to an errant ball or fly in front of the pack to take one uncontested. He is a smart user of the footy out of defence, often taking the safe, possession holding option if there isn’t a clear avenue to go forward, resulting in very few turnovers.

It would be a pretty steep price since we're only taking the three players in the draft but making them all in the 10-20 range is very tempting.

in the past I have been able to make up a wish list after scouring the highlights packages.
Blokes I got very hot for in the past were Stringer , Richards and Williams. Was wrapped we ended up drafting them at the time.

This batch are not doing it for me !

Yeah I'm yet to see a highlights package that's made me excited. In past years I've hit on McCluggage, Rozee, and Richards as well, very quickly based on their highlights, sometimes you can just tell. None of that this year though.

I mean he shouldn’t be, but a lot of posts of links suggesting after North that there might be some draft bolters snatched up

What gets me is, a player plays 5 to maybe 10 good games and gets a nasty injury. Doesn’t play for the rest of the year (but oh he has a higher scope for improvement) vs a guy who has killed it the whole year

Yes Dav I would be all in on McKenzie , but there looks to be little chance he lasts to us.
