Certainly sounds like 17 is up for grabs.

I would be comfortable trading brisbanes future first rounder for it if the right players were still there.

11, 17, 21

Trade them future first and 39 for 17?

With all the talk of teams asking the afl for more flexibility at the trade table with regards to future picks (eg trade future 1st and 2nd out). Did anything actually change?

Normally you pay a premium to move future picks into the current draft but I’m not sure that will play out this year given perceived strength and depth of talent next year.

I think Sydney would possibly even do #17 and F2 (currently #36) for Brisbane F1 (currently #15) and #39. I’m not convinced they actually get a better deal than that.

We had the misfortune to have picks 1 and 4 in the 2003 ND. I say misfortune because it was probably our best draft hand ever, but coincided with one of the worst drafts ever. What saved it for us was Adam Cooney who was a standout at pick #1.

The point of this historical digression is that we took Farren Ray at pick #4 in that draft and he was a late convert from soccer just like Konstanty. Ray left us after 75 games and played most of his career at St Kilda as a bland, handy player who was never outstanding. Somehow he managed to rack up over 200 games but across his whole career got only 9 Brownlow votes, so you'd have to say that's a disappointing return for a running small player at pick #4.

I can see the appeal of Konstanty as a latecomer to AFL, suggesting that he is still only part way up a big improvement curve. This same hope however never materialised into any great improvement for Ray. If we did end up drafting Konstanty as an early second rounder I'd just hope that he has more strings to his bow (such as his tackling) and turns out better than Ray did.

Wouldn't be completely against him at pick 21 but I'd be a bit nervous.
Farren Ray did play a very handy Elimination Final in 2006 against the Pies with 29 possessions and 2 goals. Otherwise I agree he was super lacklustre for a pick #4 (although a different even in a different era or drafting).

For all the complaints about tanking and priority picks in that era we really didn’t get much on-field from Farren Ray and Tom Williams (we would have drafted Cooney and Griffen even without priority picks).

FROM THE FOXSPORTS PHANTOM DRAFT LINKED ABOVE

PICK 13: WESTERN BULLDOGS — JEDD BUSSLINGER

Position:
Key defender

Size: 196cm, 82kg

Clubs: East Perth/Coolbinia/WA

AFL player comparison: Darcy Moore

A rangy 195cm defender who reads the ball superbly in the air and has great defensive nous and composure, Busslinger is widely regarded as the best tall back in this year’s talent pool. He made the All-Australian team — despite playing just two champs games after undergoing shoulder surgery — as he showed off his intercept, rebound and ball-winning abilities against Vic Metro and the Allies. Busslinger might take some time to mature physically at AFL level — especially after his shoulder surgery — but his height and footy smarts have recruiters excited about his potential.

In the mix: The word is the Dogs are weighing up between a key defender and a midfielder with their first pick — and they’re more likely to get a higher-quality defender with their first selection rather than their second-rounder (Pick 21). But if they go for a midfield/hybrid type, Oliver Hollands would be a strong chance to go should the Blues not pounce on him with the previous pick. The Dogs have also put a lot of work into WA bolter Ed Allan, who was a standout at October’s national combine after an injury-interrupted 2022 campaign. If they opt for a different key defender to Busslinger, Lewis Hayes or Josh Weddle would be their best options. There’s even been a few whispers top Tasmanian prospect Lachie Cowan — a rebounding defender in the Bailey Dale mould — is in the Dogs’ sights, but that could be more likely with their second-rounder.

LATER IN THE DRAFT

The Western Bulldogs this week suggested they wouldn’t be picking on ‘needs’ during the draft, with list boss Dom Milesi suggesting they’d instead opt for best available talent. Rival clubs wouldn’t be shocked if the Bulldogs again dipped into their VFL program — like they did in 2018 and 2021 to select Will Hayes and Robbie McComb respectively — and recruited Footscray captain Lachie Sullivan, who won the team’s best and fairest award after averaging 28 disposals, seven clearances, six tackles and five inside 50s per game. Gun Port Melbourne defender Ethan Phillips is the other VFL prospect that could be taken by an AFL club on the second night of the draft.

Hence key word "apparently" Just went off what the Lions list manager gave off in his cheeky little post trade period chat.

Either way my main point was the 4th rounders are useless, so no idea why we loaded up on so many of them when we likely won't use them and they have no trade up value. Was hoping we could use them to package up for a trade up next year, and saw they have zero points value just about, much to my disappointment.
Normally I’d agree and I’m not saying this is the reasoning but one possible theory …

It’s suggested that this years draft will have a very small number of players selected vs. previous years, with most clubs only picking up 2-3 players. With a supposedly strong and deep draft next year, we may see the opposite with much heavier cuts to lists vs. usual and clubs using 5-6 selections*. In that scenario there is actually some value in having multiple 4th in that it might bring your 4th-6th selections forward by 18-36 spots (if the 5th and 6th round picks aren’t just all passes like normal).

* Looking at our own list of players coming out of contract there’s >10 that I wouldn’t feel confident betting will still be on the list in 2024.

Jedd Busslinger at our first pick is gaining a lot of traction from various phantom drafts, should make a few of you on here very happy no doubt

Was it English or Naughton who was similar? I remember one of them was rated quiet highly on the drat boards and rankings post season, but started slipping down the boards the closer it got to the draft. Eventuallly ending up at our pick. Could be a repeat with Busslinger should he reach us.

It was English he was highly rated but no one wanted to go early on a ruck. So we had won a premiership and got to take him with our 1st at pick 18/19 don't remember exactly what number but was the last pick of the first round.

A little harsh perhaps, but he’s probably shown why. 25 years old and still not imposing himself in games often enough. The talent is there, clearly. I really hope it clicks for him this year.

He is just to nice. I want to see him be a real A hole, short of Greene levels of cause. Use that physicality and size to his advantage. Where Grundy would throw him on the ground at a stoppage in defence, grab the ball and snap the goal untouched. I want English to be that person instead.

The majority of the leagues Rucks are not overly athletic, He really should be getting his hands on it first more often than he does.

I reckon if he doesn't get KO'd by Naughton this year, he will be more consistent. Something about headknocks that seems to take the confidence out of him. Started the last season very well. Was not the same when he came back.

That being said. We have English, Sweet as main rucks. Still waiting for English to peak, Sweet needs to find the ball more and impact around the ground. Lobb and Darcy are FWD/Relief rucks. The latter not yet proven at this level at all

If Barnett (hypothetical) or Keller is there at 39. Would anyone take a stab at one to develop in the VFL? If we did not have Lobb I would say lets grab one to develop for sure. But I feel we will be a little top heavy to grab another just now.

That’s an absolutely awful trade for us. I’d argue they should be sending us something back if we’re sending back a F1 given they want to move to next years ‘stronger draft’.

Realistically we're taking three ND picks, Lachie Sullivan as a rookie, and Oskar Baker as a SSP player. Sullivan doesn't fill a need and isn't a long-term project player. Feels wasteful when we could try out a high risk high reward player in a position of need.

This was from the advertiser article about South Australian prospects

Shaun Bennier

North Adelaide, defender

Brisbane and the Bulldogs have shown some interest.

Adam D’Aloia

Woodville-West Torrens, midfielder

Expected to get taken somewhere around pick 40 to 50. The Western Bulldogs (39), Hawthorn (41, 48, 50), Essendon (54) and Fremantle (43, 44) all have picks in that range and are understood to be in the mix.

Rhett Montgomerie

Central District, defender

Montgomerie is ready to go and is believed to have caught the eye of the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Essendon.

Max Michalanney

Norwood, defender

Sydney, the Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Collingwood and West Coast are looming as the likeliest clubs to bid on the Crows father-son prospect. There is a decent chance it now happens on the first night. The Swans have 14 and 17, Bulldogs have 11 and 21, Kangaroos have 23, Magpies have 16 and 25, and Eagles have 12, 20 and 26.

Bennier has strong Will Gould vibes.

I'd offer our future first 21 and 39 for 14, 17 and a future third. Skewed in our favour but not unreasonable considering the Swans want to trade out.
The Fox article also said that Melbourne want to trade ahead of West Coasts second pick so we might be able to get a premium for 11 if they're desperate.

Think his draft profile pic is misleading. Looked super fit at the SA combine and got 2nd for agility and 3 min 2km.

So many weeks, so little to fill up the media space with.

Is there anybody remotely connected with footy who hasn’t done a phantom draft yet?

None of which should have the slightest bearing on what name Dom Milesi calls out on draft night. He would have his draft board pretty much sorted by now and no amount of phantom drafts is going to change that.

The last few years we’ve had at least one name pop up where we’ve all said “WHO?” and gone searching the draft write ups to find out who this kid that nobody has talked about really is. Players like Garcia, Vandermeer, Butler, Arthur Jones and so on.

I reckon there’s a strong chance we pull another of those out at pick 39. I’m looking forward to looking backward to see who got close to nailing our actual draft picks. The first two shouldn’t be too hard (with a few stabs) but the third one could be anybody.
