Luuk De Jong getting a run is telling. Garbage.
The only telling thing is who the manager is. LVG loves Luuk for some reason.
No idea why he was picked- particularly in a season where he has missed most of it with a calf injury and isn't even starting at the Dutch side he captains.
Why not pick Donyell Malen? - the very slippery Dortmund attacker. Or Arnaut Danjuma - the pacy winger/forward at Villereal? Hell, if you want to pick someone else from the Dutch league, why not go Brian Brobbey, the 20 year old who was fantastic last season and has scored 8 goals from 9 starts this year?
The biggest omission, however, in my view is actually in midfield, with Ryan Gravenberch missing out. The boy wonder dominated the Dutch league and is now getting more and more minutes at Bayern Munich as a 20 year midfield maestro. Deserved to be in the squad and get some early exposure.
Anyway, the only reason I can think that they would pick de Jong is that many of the available strikers play similarly. Fast, technical, good feet but not a significant aerial threat. de Jong is often used as a sub option late in games to try a headed goal from crosses/long balls/set pieces (when the usual options are not working). That's his one trick he's good at - even last season at Barca he seemed to have a knack of bobbing up for the semi-regular goal when he was only seeing 6-8 minutes of game time.
With all that said, LVG has Weghorst in the squad who is 197cm tall and a significant aerial threat. He is also younger and has 6 goals and 4 assists already this season for Besiktas. So I spose back to I have no idea why LDJ is the squad.
