Iran USA will be a spicy meatball.

It's rumored that Iran will be using kamikaze drones for the match. US will respond by sabotaging the concessions stands preventing Iranians from getting a drink. It'll be brutal.

While England should get through the group, if Southgate continues to start Mcguire while leaving someone like Alexander-Arnold on the bench, they will be a comical and spectacular failure.

England and Wales for mine

I think we'll escape the group, though Iran are the only team I'm certain we'll beat.

USA/Wales is the wildcard match. Can't predict it.

If he even picks Maguire for the squad, it will proof Southgate has completely lost the plot.

I think England fans everywhere will generally agree that when unshackled, we play better. The likes of Saka, Foden, Rashford etc benefit more from a pacy game. I fear Southgate won't go for that.

Iran are being discussed as easy beats and whilst I agree they are the most likely to finish 4th, they've proven for a long time to be pretty organised in defence and not a walkover.

Working against them is they haven't played many quality teams in a long time but they have only been beaten twice in the last 2+ years (16 wins, 2 draws). In their last 2 games (in September) they beat Uruguay and drew with Senegal.

Last world cup they beat Morocco, were a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 to Spain and then drew with Portugal.

The world cup before they drew with Nigeria and it took a 93rd minute bit of Messi magic at his peak for Argentina to beat them 1-0.

I don't put much stock in rankings but they are ranked 20th, only 1 spot behind Wales (and 4 behind the US).

They may yet make me look silly and completely capitulate but I wouldn't be surprised if they offered at least as much nuisance value as Wales. Certianly not the clear easy beats of the group as I think is being made out.

That midfield is atrocious behind rice and Bellingham
I'm not concerned about the midfield, with the exception of a Kalvin Phillips who can't possibly be match fit. Picking an out-of-form Sterling when Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney are available is baffling. None of the decisions come close to the atrocity of Maguire.

I'd be concerned about midfield depth, one injury and that midfield is woeful. Henderson, Gallagher and Phillips are not up to International level. It is not surprise that the best midfielders in the PL are all overseas players.

I'm not gonna agree RE quality assessments, but taking players who haven't played much isn't smart.

He didn't choose Tammy apparently because he "lost form at the wrong time"

So if he had been like Maguire and lost it early in the season he would have been OK?

Bloke is just a fackwit.

Nah. Tammy would have needed to be terrible for the last 18 months, like Harry Maguire.

Would've Toney been overlooked because of the betting scandal hanging over his head? It's the only reason I can think of, or it could be Southgate not letting go of experienced international players despite form. Maguire over Tomori :tearsofjoy:.

Form is more relevant for a striker than a CB. I think Maguire is fine, not hugely different to us taking Souttar. You take the players that suit your system and back them to perform over a tournament of 7 games. Same logic for Phillips who should be fit now after starting for City.

Gallagher is the head scratcher for me. Surely you take JWP instead.
