I don't disagree but next year you are going to have a chunk of those players on the wrong side of 30

Edwards will be 33
Cotchin will be 32
Martin will be31
Lambert will be30
Lynch will be 30
Prestia will be 30

That doesn't mean they are guaranteed to fall away but it is a big possibility

Add to that the below players who are all best 22 will be 30 or over next year too

Reiwoldt will be 33
Tarrant will be 33
Astubry will be 31
Grimes will be 31
Pickett will be 30
Caddy will be 30 (not sure if he is still contracted though)

I think Richmond should bounce back up but that is half your best 22 being 30 or over it is far from guaranteed imo. I can se why you guys have gone to the draft with a strong draft hand to start replenishing the list
Yeh we'll have to wait and see. I dont see us winning the flag necessarily, but fairly confident we'll make 5th-8th.

Either way, it's good we will get a good start on the future core with a good handful of decent picks.

Yeah for sure.

It will be interesting to see the rebound and how Richmond go next year.

Finals for:

Melbourne, Bulldogs, Brisbane, Geelong, Fremantle, Essendon (and win a final), Carlton and Richmond - no real order here.

Will go close-ish and not be complete s**t:

Sydney, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Gold Coast, GWS

The arse completely falls out of:

Port, West Coast, St Kilda

and the rest either cellar dwellers or no man’s land:

North, Adelaide

In summary..

So I have Port, GWS and Sydney replaced by Carlton, Fremantle and Richmond.

Adam Simpson leaves West Coast - takes on North Melbourne for 2023

Nic Naitanui joins Bulldogs as a Free Agent for a flag chase in 2023 after they work out that Stef Martin is knackered and Tim English is a limp noodle.

Lock it in.

We worked that out in 2020 it's just that we have no options lmao.

Kudos to our previous list managers in the late 2000s for their expert drafting of key position players. Imagine if we had to rely on a 21 year old tall forward to carry the forward line!

I think if we get a good run with no injuries and perform at our best I think we can finish anyway between 12 to 16 on the ladder.

I think Carlton need a proper middling year. I don’t think it’s a bad thing but a bit like us in 2017 a year where they finish 9th or 10th with a few rounds in the top 8 seems more likely to me than leaping straight in there

Is it better to be in 'No Man's Land' or be a spoon contender?

Depends. I think North and Adelaide are more advanced in their rebuild than the bottom 3 but they’re both still at least 2 years away from genuine finals contention imo. I have the Eagles and maybe even the Cats for that matter as the worst placed sides in the comp in regards to winning a flag as both are yet to begin their inevitable rebuilds.

I think Port have reached that no man's land where they are not quite good enough to win a flag, but far too good to bottom out.

I dont see them bombing to the level you predict though.

Melbourne (1946) = -63 (finished 6th in 1947)
Carlton (1949) = -73 (finished 8th in 1950)
Collingwood (1956) = -73 (finished 5th in 1957)
Collingwood (1980) = -81 (finished 2nd in 1981)
Essendon (1983) = -83 (finished 1st in 1984)
Hawthorn (1985) = -78 (finished 1st in 1986)
Melbourne (1988) = -96 (finished 4th in 1989)
Geelong (1994) = -80 (finished 2nd in 1995)
Geelong (1995) = -61 (finished 7th in 1996)
Melbourne (2000) = -60 (finished 11th in 2001)
Port Adelaide (2007) = -119 (finished 13th in 2008)
Sydney (2014) = -63 (finished 4th in 2015)
GWS (2019) = -89 (finished 10th in 2020)
Western Bulldogs (2021) = -74 (?)

It’s happened twice. Essendon and Hawthorn in the 80s.

Would you say 1954 wasn’t a spanking? Dogs doubled Melbourne’s score and won by 51 points. Melbourne won 1955.

This is almost impossible exercise. The competition is so equal it’s not funny. As usual, injuries will play a major part, some clubs don’t have a depth to cover for them. Just for fun here is my ladder.

1. Melbourne – They are simply primed for 3-4 years period of success.
2. WB – Similar to Melbourne they will be a force 3-4 years. The ruck issue is still there.
3. Brisbane – They finally got injuries in 2021 which hurt them. The list looks good, still not convinced that their midfield can compete with the best in finals.
4. Port – The loss to WB in finals will haunt them for a long time. They still make finals by I can’t see them winning it and some old players are reaching the end of journey.
5. Giants – If they can stay relatively healthy which they never do I see them playing in finals. A lot of talent on that list.
6. Swans – The young brigade will only get better complemented by mature players.
7. Cats – Still make finals but go out again. The re-build cliff is getting closer and closer.
8. Tigers – They should bounce back but I am not overly confident. No team can stay on top forever. Key players getting older, are banged up. They could be replaced by 3-5 teams below.
9. Essendon – Some impressive game style in 2021. Could easily jump into top 8. Forward line is still the issue.
10. St Kilda – With Marshall and Ryder they are a different team. Can they stay on the park?
11. Carlton – On paper they should make top 8. Can Voss teach them how to play as a team? Still not convinced about their midfield.
12. Suns – My team, so I am biased. Surely having a ruck should help to start climbing the ladder. A lot of talent reached 50+ games and should make a difference.
13. Fremantle – I am not impressed by their forward line and I don’t see depth in the middle. Always extensive injury list does not help.
14. Eagles – They looked broken in some games in 2021. I can’t see them improving.
15. Hawks – A decent team on the paper. It could end up in no man’s land re-build.
16. North – A lot of talent by also still holes on the list, not a lot of depth. A couple of injuries to key players like Cunnington, Goldstein would hurt them badly.
17. Crows – I like their pressure. Like North, re-build in early stage, holes on the list, limited depth.
18. Collingwood – Could swap place with North or Crows. Re-build. Some aging players, holes on the list, hardly scary forward line, limited depth.

I suspect Sydney won't be as good next year as we were in 2021 but we will still be on the cusp of the 8.

Aye.

I am surprised by the numbers of posters who have them in the 8. Dawson and Hewett are major losses. I have them in the 10-12 range.
