Analysis 2022 List, Game Plan and Best 22?

I don't think you are far off the money.
This list is coming together nicely.

Definite outs
Kennedy
Sinclair
Naismith
Taylor
Probable Outs
Reid-Amartey and McLean need to put up or shut up. Need consistent performances.
Clarke-I don't mind him but he is not the future. Hit his ceiling. Stephens, Campbell, Sheldrick, Roberts, C Warner are the future.

Ins-we have 2 pick 1s and a 2 and a 4.
KPD-because we need one
Mid-to replace Kennedy
Ruck-to replace Sinclair and Naismith. We need 4 on the list. Billy King is in the academy.
Forward-to replace Taylor or Reid. Tye Gander is in the academy. Do we need another KPD? see Reid.

The core of the list will be young and developing with a core headed by Heeney at 26 and a loyal group staggered just below him by age.

Buddy is on his last year at $1m. I reckon he goes around again by his form this year. Cap space opens up.

The future is bright.
I think that most here are putting too much on both Amartey and McLean.
They may get little game time next year but that's okay.
These two will definitely be needed when Buddy and Hickey are no longer running around.
A list is built for a 5 year period. They are not all expected to play next year.

Re Mamartey and McLean. I'm not saying they are out. All I'm saying is that I would like to see improvement and more consistency. They are both 23 so have yet to hit their peak. They will both be not first choices in their positions in 22. A good time to improve under the radar and step up when needed.

I agree, but I'd go one step further... I think it's much harder to win back to back GFs than just one... the fact the Hawks and Tigers have done so well in recent times is muddling everyone's thinking imo. I think it's unlikely that Melbourne will win back to back... just too hard to do!

But on the contrary, I think examples like Richmond's capitulation in 2018 and the Bulldogs non-flag in 2016 have muddled everyone into thinking that the unexpected often happens in footy. It does not, hence it is unexpected...

Contrary Unexpected expectancy. I'm in new territory. This is getting too 3D for me. My mind cannot cope.

Interesting whether King is seen as a forward, a ruck or a ruck/forward. Of course, no decision needs to be made immediately. Also interesting where King, Gander and any other Academy kids are rated in the draft. We may well get at least one first rounder before them.
I wouldn't die of surprise if Sinclair got another year if Hickey is healthy and playing well. He can still mentor McAndrew and then King, though he might start more as a forward if McAndrew is shaping up.
Surely Naismith retires. Surely.
I think this will be a make or break season for a few guys, not just Amartey and McLean. Clarke, Taylor, Bell, Stephens, Gould, O'Connor, Fox and maybe COR are all playing for their futures.

Then again, a team going from 17th to premier in the space of 2 years is also unexpected.

Not necessarily. It would depend on how much one thought their 2018 season was a false dawn. I guess every dynasty has started with many doubting it's potential. I suppose I fall into the 'believer' category, though that perhaps flatters the Demons as I'm not THAT into them (I don't hate them either though.) The problem with being sold on a rival team's dynasty potential is that in theory it cancels out your own team's prospects of having a dynasty, so it is easier to be skeptical of it in hope, than to be convinced by it. However I'm of the belief that we are still a few seasons away from that anyway, so I think there's still time for Melbourne to have their turn before we kindly take the reins.

Getting the impression we're going to see most of the list over the course of the year given covid protocol

Our young mids are going to get a lot of time

it was a bit unexpected that the Swans won 15 games, finishing equal 4th last season also. Just as it was unexpected that we won bugger all games in 2020.. I think injuries played a big part in the Swans 2020 ladder position. I guess,, unexpected injuries..
In a competition that is set up to be even,, the unexpected will happen every year.
Expect the unexpected!?..?!

Melbourne looks a very strong team, but I reckon there are a few very over-rated players in that team. A few injuries to key players and theres no reason why the Demons won't miss the finals.
fingers crossed for the Swans 1st round pick that the D's miss the finals.

I still think it was a blessing in disguise.
Loosing a final = a blessing in disguise? Absolutely disagree!
and Im certain every person involved in the Swans footy club would also disagree
Loosing a final is NEVER a good thing. The players, Coaches and entire club work their asses off every year to Not lose games let alone finals.

Every chance we win against the Cats in the 2nd final.. maybe we win the next one.. maybe we win the granny??
where ever the loss comes (if at all), that loss will be used as motivation to take an extra step next season.

It's so easy to look at every team that wins the flag has the potential for it to start a dynasty. It could have been said of us in the early 2010s after winning it in 2012. Sure, we played in a further 2 grand finals but did not win another one. It is certainly expected that Melbourne will be a top team next year but in my opinion it is unexpected that they will win it again.
There are far too many variables.
Injuries, of which they had very few last year, will play a big part in any teams aspirations.
Matches that are won by less than a goal have a huge impact if they become losses instead.
Other teams now know that it is possible to make that quantum leap from an ok side to a premier and confidence and self belief can do some amazing things.
As premier, they are now the hunted rather than the hunter. This can play a role.
Even though they won the GF easily, it was achieved in 40 minutes of brilliant footy. Half way through the third quarter it appeared as if the Dogs were going to run away with it. This proves that you are only as good as you play on any given day. They, along with any side, are capable of having an off day. That could come on prelim day, assuming they make it.

We're going round and round in circles and it's a bit pointless because if you look at my original post, nowhere do I say Melbourne are guaranteed to win it. I literally started it with "It's not certain", and also say "Stranger things have happened" and "Melbourne might have an off night."

It's not certain, but it's going to take a mighty effort for someone else to win it, given that A) Melbourne were miles ahead of any other team this year, so everyone else basically has to play catch-up just to get level with them, and B) It will most likely require actually beating Melbourne to do it, and they have the most comprehensive and well-rounded team in the comp.

Stranger things have happened, but in most cases (ie. not 2018), the best team of the year does usually end up winning the flag. Melbourne might have an off night, but who is going to be better than them next year?

Anyway, though I don't mind the Demons as a team, I don't like them anywhere near enough to think they are worth spending any more energy discussing them. FWIW I think if we can avoid taking a backwards step (something that I'm not yet confident of), then I reckon we will be their biggest challengers, and that in itself is exciting.

This is my biggest issue with believing that Melbourne are going to have a dynasty. As illogical as it is, it's hard for me to think anyone but the swans will win next year hahaha.

Sydney Swans 2022 Season Preview - The Big Questions

Don Pyke has apparently supervised training for the four WA lads - LMac, Sheldrick and the two Warners. IIRC they are due in Sydney this week to resume training with the main group (how Covid ravaged the squad remains an open question).

The four should have had a solid pre-season and I expect, advanced tutorials on the game plan and specialised drills. Body and brain wise they should be geared to join and add energy to the main group.

I'm pretty bullish on our recruits.
Sheldrick. I read something somewhere that when he steps up a level he improves. I think it was an interview with Dalrymple. I might be wrong. With Kennedy moving on he has a year to learn the Sydney system and game plan and have an opportunity to impress.
Roberts. Another solid on baller like Sheldrick but also can play forward. Was rated much higher than his pick by some. With Taylor, Ronke, Reid not looking like solids in 2023 he has opportunities. Again we have a pretty good 22 this year so barring injuries he may not get many opportunities to play in the top grade. Not a bad thing as there is plenty to learn.
Cory Warner. From his junior games I watched he has that self assurance and class like his brother. I think I'm going to like what he eventually contributes.
Rankin. I'm a little bullish on him if he turns out a defender. Looks like he could fill in for Cunningham or Lloyd or any small to medium defender. Which we have little depth.

I'm still not sold on Lamborg playing more mid time as I think we have plenty of mids, especially inside. Last year we could not fit Hewett in and now there is somehow a spot available. Lamborg is a much more dangerous forward.

Clarke and Bell' I don't see much game time for them. Hopefully Stephens has a big preseason and fulfils his potential and plays significant contiguous games.

Reckon you're not a mile off the mark.
I think all the newbies will get a good solid year together in the VFL side (COVID permitting!) learning the system and training in the group with the senior guys.
I think Taylor and Clarke have shown themselves team first and are very solid at VFL level. They'll help and at least one or two of the "stars" will be playing VFL if everyone's fit. Be interesting to see what roles they are given. I reckon for sure we'll see Angus inside and Corey outside but the others not sure at all.
I too doubt we'll see much of Heeney on the inside but maybe on the outside? That's where he generally hangs when the ball is forward - on the edge, rather than in the middle extracting.
Still struggling to see where Stephens fits in this team. Not that he's a bad player, just that it seems someone else does his skills better. Hope he proves me wrong.

Hi all.

A couple of things.

1 - Guessing by the likes on the quoted post you guys liked the content. Really pleased to see that, as I pour a fair bit into giving in-depth coverage. It's why I started the site - I reckon it is missing in the legacy media.

2 - I didn't "drag" George Hewett anywhere, anytime. I stated on multiple occasions he would not be with Sydney following 2021 as he could see the writing on the wall with the young talent coming through and the chance to earn good coin elsewhere. Of course, Carlton came to the party - he is a very good player.

3 - Whilst I am appreciative of those who get our articles out there, copying and pasting members-only articles is a really shitty move. Not even linking back to it... same thing. We're not a huge organisation. I run this by myself. This was akin to buying something at a Mum and Pop shop and shoplifting seven other things to hand out to your mates while you're at it. Sure, they're happy they too got something for nothing, but you're ripping off the small business. Leave that to Murdoch and his mates - go nuts with them!

Anyway, don't want to have to much of a whine - been putting in the hard yards for a while, and if this is seen as one of those victimless actions, I understand... only I am the victim, here :)

Caesar88, I'd appreciate if you could take a moment before you decide to do this again. It's a bit of a kick in the guts to someone who is definitely not one of the big boys, trying to make a fist of things writing about AFL...

I wouldn't know. All I know is that the last five players we've drafted from the SANFL have played an average of 3 games in their first two seasons. So I don't subscribe to the idea that playing SANFL makes you more prepared for AFL.
Dawson, Hewett, Stephens no good?

Sometimes players take a bit of time to develop into their roles. Take Dawson & Hewett.

Matty Nicks, Marty Mattner, Fearless Fosdyke were all great AFL players.

Gould has time to develop. Pink was a project player at 58 in the Rookie Draft. Rose had plenty of talent but was disappointing.

Will Hayward has not done too badly. He played 40 in his first 2 seasons. He, I believe would be in the last 5 players from SA drafted.

Dawson is an absolute star. He could have played, should have played, earlier. We played some shite, from Victoria and WA and left him in the reserves. He should have played in his first season. He was good enough. He will win the Brownlow for Adelaide, playing where he is best, mids.

But if you look at all the players we sent back to Victoria the numbers are far greater and many were drafted higher the the SA boys. Alternatively, until Dawson, the go he factor has not been as high for SA or WA boys as it has for Victorians. The VFL is too big. Too many teams which cuts down the quality. The fact Southport could waltz in from the NEAFL and stay top for most of the year should tell you something about the standard.

I was looking at the costs of becoming a Mungrel Punt member recently and it showed 3 category options. One of $6, one of $12 and one of $25.
Are these figures one off annual fees or are they to be paid monthly?

I would expect monthly. I reckon the $6 would be great value. I've actually tried to subscribe twice and it's spat me out. Compared to most of the rubbish out there worth every cent IMO.

Hi HB,

First up - cheers for all your hard work on TMP. I know many of our posters often read & quote your work (myself included). So congrats on establishing the site & brand. I wish you every success. Keep it up!

Next up - I completely agree with you here. Not only is it in very bad taste but there are site rules around posting media articles & content. If you want to quote a sentence here or there, sure... But a whole article? No way. Just give a brief rundown & use the link function to instead re-direct posters to the source so they can access it themselves.

Thanks all,

Gtg.
