I was unaware that the Lions were this well regarded in the "most supported AFL team" list
We did however drop -5.9% this year but still in 5th place
Still it's a little hard to believe we sit in this high position
Maybe why our membership has had a decent increase over the years along with winning of course

I actually expected GWS to be a bit higher, given they have all of Canberra and a fair chunk of western Sydney.

I guess part of the problem is the "GWS" branding, whereas a Western Sydney brand would've been a lot clearer.

These "supporter" surveys basically ring up and give people a list of the AFL clubs and ask them which they support. They could know absolutely zero about AFL, but hear "Brisbane" or "Sydney" and choose that based off where they live. It's why those teams are perpetually overachieving on these compared to membership numbers, even when we were crap.

GWS specifically going after rugby league territory and those type of supporters are more used to watching games on TV, and also Rugby league isn't really a heavily membership driven game AFAIK, not nearly as much attention is put on membership numbers.

Email about membership numbers also mentioned home crowd numbers

"284,000 Total Gabba crowd. Our best attended AFL season since 2010"

Below from footy wire
If we can get 32k for Thursday night our average will go to 26,333 so heading in the right direction
Still a fair way to go to get to the 2000 to 2010 period attendance numbers

interesting to know how many Vic members over the years.
I know a few who did not renew this year with lack of games.
3 game memberships and other short term memberships massively inflate numbers as they do for all Vic clubs that bang on about 100K + supporters yet struggle getting 40K members to its games paticulalry against interstate teams.

I think clubs should post membership revenue dollars instead of raw numbers and then you can see what the real value is.

Those stats are hard to draw any sort of useful conclusions from. Home game attendance is influenced by away fan attendance as well as member attendance. Home games can be played away from their main stadium (ie Cairns, Alice Springs, Tasmania etc). The smaller your membership number is the larger impact away fans attending your home game will have on the attendance percentage.

I think the key telling fact is GWS home attendance is lower than the Suns despite GWS having had more historical success. Thats pretty worrying. It seems the Suns stole an initial ~10k fans from the Lions in 2012 and have maintained that level of attendance despite being objectively the worst franchise over the past decade. If Suns manage to have a successful period of finals appearances it would not be surprising if they start to average 15-20k patrons per game.

I wonder if we can move towards 30k attendance in the next few years but I guess it will be harder as all the cheap seats would be sold by then and we would have to rely on punters willing to spend $50+ to attend games in the better seats.
