Atu- gone
Young- has produced some decent footy this season 1 year deal
Turner- good clubman, can play multiple roles 1 year deal
P Walker- gone
McGuiness- can he play AFL as a KPD if called upon next year? If yes 1 year if no gone.
Bonar- contracted til 2023


If Massimo is best available take him.

Not sure any of the guys we have for that kicking defender role are locks for our long term B22.

The concern I have is the plethora of similar players we already have?

What does it mean for Hayden, Atu, Bergman, Goater, Bonar, Young, McDonald, Archer, P Walker, Hall, Turner, Perez, McGuiness?

There is only so many you can play and at a guess, I think 5 or 6 on a list would suffice? 2 in seniors and 2 in VFL? 2 developing or specialist roles e.g. lockdown defender or play maker (Caleb Daniel type).

I would say we are going to keep Hall, McDonald, Perez, Goater and Bergman for next year.

If we select Massimo does that mean all of Hayden, Atu, Young, Turner, P Walker, McGuiness, Bonar all get delisted?

No point having so many players on the list who won’t be playing?

My opinion is that simply he’s more talented than most of those guys, and plays very differently to them.

Hayden, Bonar, Archer and Turner have been more designated to stopping roles and their skills don’t seem to be up to it really. Young and Walker are wingmen and McGuinness is a 3rd tall.

A player like Massimo has the skills and competitiveness to play through all 3 levels on the ground, but if he could prove it in the VFL he should be a better option than those we have in defence currently, especially with Hall out. I think he and Bergman would both be groomed as potential Hall replacements but both of them have the skills to play anywhere and for this year at least Massimo would essentially replace Bergman.

A bit of competition for spots wouldn’t hurt, and the more good users the better.

If the top few are around the equivalent of pick 30-40 in the main draft, I imagine someone around 10-12 in the MSD would end up a very speculative 60-70. There's probably not much to lose in getting a close look at someone and having first rights if they look good, but it could easily turn into another Charlie Ham situation where we choose to release the spot again for another pick at the end of the year.

Massimo and El Nour would change our defence profile and would offset some of our draft issues this year.

Cullet looks a ripper, and we’d kick ourselves if he went elsewhere and played good senior footy.

Really hope the club get creative, especially with Lynch’s contract, he’s served his purpose and is clearly not playing at any level this year.

Take two spots to mid season, put pressure on our current fringe players with hopefully 2/3 aforementioned players. Would even consider Voss as a defender too if one of those 3 aren’t available.

There's a heap I think are worthy of a spot to see what they could do. I think these guys are likely to be at our 2nd pick: Jye Menzie (small forward), Ethan Phillip (key defender), Will Reinhold (key defender) and Max Walton (rebound defender/wing).

MID-SEASON BOLTER IN TIGER’S SIGHTS​

Mid-season draft contender Massimo D’Ambrosio is expected to be back under Richmond’s watchful eye as the intake approaches.

D’Ambrosio strengthened his chances of landing on an AFL list on June 1 with a standout performance for the Young Guns against Vic Country last weekend, tallying 32 disposals, 22 kicks at 77 per cent efficiency, nine marks and seven rebound 50s.

A part of Richmond’s VFL program during the pre-season after being overlooked in last year’s drafts, the 178cm distributing defender made his VFL debut in its season-opener – showing positive signs in a 15-disposal and 10 intercept possession display – and is tipped to don the yellow and black for the remaining two matches before the mid-season draft.

Former Richmond defender and Tigers VFL coach Steve Morris has helped mentor the silky youngster during his time at Punt Road.

Sydney, Hawthorn and Geelong, who all have selections in the mid-season draft, are among the clubs who have inquired about D’Ambrosio.

The 19-year-old, renowned for his elite kicking and decision-making, returned to the NAB League and dominated for the Western Jets after his promising VFL debut, averaging a formidable 27.8 disposals, eight intercept possessions and eight rebound 50s.

Recruiters are eager to see more of him at state league level after proving his worth in the NAB League, with the Jets also having the bye this weekend.

The Tigers have managed to fill the gaping hole left by the retirement of Bachar Houli

We'll do a Jacobs and dither, Polec won't play again for the year anyway and some other team will take advantage of the MSD Covid generated (via distorted 2020-21 seasons) depth.

Would be great if the likes of El Nour slipped to our second pick (assuming we have one), but it does seem a bit unlikely. I just hope we have a crack at a KPD at that second pick, in particular a more mature player worthy of a second chance, such as Jack Maibaum. Even if they don't work out, which chances are a pick in the teens in the MSD won't, at least they will have a secondary benefit of shoring up our VFL backline through to the end of the year and help out some of the young guys down there.

Players can retire into the MSD though, is there a reason he'd have to justify it?

Hoping they loaded up his wage onto the playing list already and then he retires and gets "paid out" while getting minimum wage from his coaching wage (if he has one).

I'm not sure, there's no issue with a retirement but I'm tipping there might be an eyebrow raised over it. The irony is that Lynch should have been playing every week in the seniors, ideal player for the disconnect between d and f50

It's innovative (regardless of my opinion that I didn't like it particularly) but we're probably fortunate that other clubs have already broken the glass on using this approach. So even for a corrupt biased organisation like the AFL it'd be hard to pinpoint us for this being an abuse of the various cap distributions.

Not sure there's been an exact case like this before though. I wouldn't be surprised to see the AFL take this sort of approach with the first club to do it:

Swans do it - Look, we're not happy about it, but we'll let it happen this once, then we're closing that loop hole.

North do it - F*** NO!

I don't mind a long term project player or an immediate needs but what drives me nuts is the choice of a player who doesn't really fill a need, doesn't have the potential, the size, speed or skills to be a long term prospect and isn't fit enough to play this year. Please don't bother going LTI or retiring somebody to pick up another nothing selection.
