What are you excited for this year?

I believe we could finally expect something from Karnivool and also The Butterfly Effect should hopefully drop a new album this year.

Aside from that, I'm not too sure what else I'm expecting!

Alice Glass (formerly of Crystal Castles) is releasing her debut solo album later this month. At the moment this is the only release that I know of that I maybe interested in.

I can see this year being a lot stronger than 2021.

New Earl Sweatshirt is out.

Wilderun’s (who I hadn’t heard before) LP sounded great.

Best Burial EP since Kindred.

Also new Frank Ocean likely? Could be a very stellar year.

The new Hikaru Utada has surprised me, I had felt like their best days were well behind now, but Bad Mode proved me wrong, Utada's best album to date (!) and I've listened to it at least twenty times these past few days. Already a worthy aoty for me.

Big Thief album coming in Feb

Big Thief are a band I should love, but I find they're a bit by the numbers. Will always give their LP's a decent spin, but rarely come away with a couple of tracks I can keep coming back to to keep me interested.

In a similar vein the new Black Country, New Road is a really good step up. Only gave their first LP a couple of spins, but enjoyed it enough. There's a pretty big explosion of mathy Talking Heads inspired indie rock bands (Squid, Black Midi) at the moment, and this is probably the best LP I've heard in that group.

New Rolo Tomassi is great. Definitely a band I've been interested in getting into, but haven't had enough impetus.

New Pinegrove is decent. Still waiting for an album that probably wont come, but they've put out some decent songs again.

Agreed, been really enjoying that one

Critics don't like thirtysomethings?
Think we might be on different wave lengths here. I've seen lots of very positive reviews (83 on metacritic now, was higher I think). I wasn't much of a fan of it myself.

New Beach House!

Very keen on this, I think 7 has ascended to my favourite album.

New Big Thief is great. They've been putting out some consistently good stuff, but nothing that has really piqued my interest. They've definitely evolved as songwriters and one of few artists that can comfortably fill out a couple of discs.

Reminds me of Wilco's Being There in terms of being a fairly substantial 2xLP with no major dips. Unlike on single disc albums, you're happy to accommodate some minor low points as long as there's enough variation in the songs and the overall quality is good. Everything flows pretty well, there's a couple of well placed reprises or novella tracks.

It's really good stuff.

Best start to a year I can remember. Not sure whether you can consider the new Beach House album a double album, but that is fantastic. New Big Thief is great, new Cult of Luna is great. New Animal Collective was pretty decent, easily their best since Merriweather Post Pavillion

I thought their debut was a little overrated, but Black Country, New Road's 2nd LP is really high quality and potentially AOTY. Has a lot of growth left and really like the set of influences. Sounds like one of Broken Social Scene's better albums and then has a couple of longer, really strong closing songs ala peak Car Seat Headrest or Titus Andronicus Battle of Hampton Roads.

Really nice stuff.
