Pick 9 | St. Kilda | Koltyn Tholstrup | 188cm 80kg | General Forward/Midfielder

Disappointed Nate Caddy didn't make it here, but Koltyn is a worthwhile consolation prize. He's an athletic, dynamic medium forward who can pinch hit in the guts when his team needs to just get it forward. He's played games across halfback as well, but as a mid he tears games open with his core strength and a massive boot. Unsure of his potential as a flight risk, but just on skill and upside he's worth the pick right now. I will say this top ~15 is far more exciting than the 2022 group for mine, so much upside with athletic, skilled footballers that can play on pretty much every line.

Also Considered: Colby McKercher, Will Lorenz, Nathan Philactides
Wouldn't mind Philactides on name alone. Brings back memories of Jason Traianides.

North’s Draft Review

Pick 3 - Harry Sheezel
Pick 4 - George Wardlaw
Pick 25 - Lachie Cowan
Pick 39 - Tom Scully
Pick 42 - Cooper Harvey

Safe to North and most of its supporters would be pretty thrilled with a draft haul like this. We pick up 2 of the top 5 prospects in the draft and continue to add to our young but talented list.

In Sheezel and Cowan you get two very dynamic and creative players who make things happen at either end of the ground. Both have damaging skills and are well suited to the modern game.

Wardlaw gives us additional inside grunt and is essential a straight up replacement in our future midfield for JHF.

Scully adds to our razor thin KP forward stocks and adds a point of difference with his height and reach.

Cooper in time will play a role through the midfield and across half forward. His defensive intent and physicality will be used to good affect in the future.

All in all another good draft that will contribute to our rise up the ladder in a few years time.

MD Pick 13 - Sam Frangalas
Pick 13 - Melbourne
Sam Frangalas
Midfielder/Forward
Dandenong

Justification

Frangalas is inside my top 10 at the moment and I'm pretty optimistic about what he can do in 2023. If you consider my 2022 haul for Melbourne (Jefferson, Sadler and Cole), a powerful, big bodied midfielder that can go forward really balances out the draft nicely.

Profile
Frangalas is a big unit with power and strength. He projects as a clean inside midfielder that can go forward and hit the scoreboard. He's strong in the air and capable below his knees, which makes him dangerous inside 50. A penetrating kick, at times Frangalas can be prone to bombing long out of the contest but with time and space he can be a pretty neat user. Without knowing his testing results, it feels like Frangalas will use strength and power rather than speed to get separation at stoppage and if he takes his contested ball winning to the next level, I think he's got every chance of being an early selection next year.

Others considered
Nathan Philactides, Kobe Shipp, Colby McKercher

MD Pick 14 - Nathan Philactides
Pick 14 - Melbourne
Nathan Philactides
Half back
Oakleigh

Justification

This may prove to be too early in 12 months time, but on exposed form Philactides looks to be a prospect who has every chance of making it at AFL level. Rivers and Bowey look to be the long term options across half back and Salem still has a few years left in him, but Phila has shown plenty of scope to be part of that defensive rotation long term.

Profile
Philactides has speed and class, two traits critical in today's game. Operating primarily across half back, he's shown that he can generate plenty of attack from the defensive half. Philactides can break the lines with his speed, he changes lanes effectively, and he gets great penetration on his kicks which is important in clearing/picking apart defensive zones.

Others considered
Kobe Shipp, Colby McKercher

Is Pie 4 Life a pseudonym for Koala 4 Life or the other way round?
It’s a pisstake from the SFA board. The story is a bit long to explain but effectively it was my club’s biggest rivals back in the day and then the Koalas folded. Recently people found the old school threads and have opted to take the piss.

MD Pick 17 - Riak Andrew
Pick 17 - Sydney - Riak Andrew
192cm - Tall Utility

Andrew missed this year because of a meniscus injury and even without he may not have featured much due to being so raw but make no doubt about it this kid is a special talent. The younger brother of Mac Andrew, Riak was 192cm in March of this year and could grow even more and he shares the same elite athleticism to his brother with an insane leap and perhaps even quicker than his brother. A goal he kicked in a practise match this year was something special and although he is raw and will be inconsistent his talent and upside is undeniable and I’m going early but reckon this will be a bargain when we look at 2023 at this time of year.

Players considered: Ben Hill/Will Brown

MD Pick 18 - Jayden Matz
#18 Geelong - Jayden Matz (196cm, 82kg from SA)

Could have gone with either of Luca Slade or Patrick Wenkert, but I thought Matz showed a fair bit this year. Played mostly ruck in the U18s because of his leap and athleticism, but played KPD for SA and I think that’s where he develops next year.
