Season 2021 finished only just over a week ago but there's been a lot of news already regarding the upcoming season for a number of clubs. With player movements and other news getting underway as we enter the off-season plus with most Best and Fairest awards having been run and won, this thread will be the place to be for all your WAFL news during the off-season and coming pre-season as we get ready for season 2022.

  • West Coast have announced they will not be fielding a side in the WAFL for season 2022 due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. The Eagles preference is to field their own side in the competition but the impacts of COVID-19 over the past couple of years have made the venture "too costly" for the coming season. It is expected that West Coast will look for an alignment with another club with several clubs having some some interest, otherwise the Eagles may be forced to spread players across multiple WAFL clubs should an alignment not be forthcoming.
  • Perth have ruled out an alignment with the Eagles with the board deciding to not take the recent approach from the West Coast Eagles any further.
  • Peel Thunder are considering ending their alignment with Fremantle despite having been aligned with the Dockers for almost a decade.
  • East Perth's Nathan Blee, Julian Ameduri and Rohan Kerr have all announced their retirement.
  • Swan Districts' defender Alex Howard and veteran midfielder Matt Riggio have retired. Howard played 174 games for the Black and Whites while Riggo represented Swans on 218 occasions.
  • Peel Thunder's Will Schofield and Ben Howlett have retired. Schofield returned to Peel Thunder after finishing his AFL with West Coast Eagles and has called time after a back complaint ruled him out of most of the second half of the season. Ben Howlett landed at Peel Thunder after his time at Essendon in the AFL came to an end.
  • Peel Thunder coach Cam Shepherd has also departed the club after nine seasons.
  • West Perth have secured Ben Johnson for two seasons, with Johnson signing on until the end of 2023. Johnson was delisted from the West Coast Eagles earlier this month and returns to his original club having been drafted from the Falcons.
  • East Perth have re-signed coach Jeremy Barnard for another season with Barnard to coach the Royals in 2022, ending months of speculation regarding his coaching tenure at the club.
  • South Fremantle ruckman Brock Higgins has retired while the Bulldogs have signed former Port Adelaide and West Coast Eagles player Brendon Ah Chee.
  • West Perth are on the verge of signing former West Coast Eagles' midfield Mark Hutchings while it is believed Luke Meadows will return to the club after having a break in 2021.
  • Perth's Christian Eyres and Matthew Rogers have retired with both players played in Perth's 2021 Reserves premiership.

  • West Coast look set to return to its former method of playing it's non-playing AFL players in the WAFL with all Western Australian players to be listed at their WAFL club while interstate recruits to either be allocated to clubs via a draft system or alternatively at one or two clubs. At this stage, the Eagles preference is to have their interstate players play at one club but has yet to be agreed upon at this stage.
  • Claremont players Kane Mitchell and Tom Ledger have retired. Mitchell played 147 games for the Tigers while also playing 35 games at Port Adelaide in four seasons in the AFL with the Power. Ledger played 96 games at Claremont along with eight at St. Kilda in the AFL before asking to be delisted.
  • Peel Thunder have stunned the WAFL, signing West Perth coach Geoff Valentine for the 2022 WAFL season. Valentine had previously coached at West Perth for the past three years but has defected to the Thunder in a shock move.
  • West Perth are on the hunt for a new coach after Geoff Valentine's shock defection to Peel Thunder earlier this week. The Falcons are apparently very keen to bringing former coach Darren Harris to the fold but are set to conduct a thorough search for a new coach with Valentine having ended his three year stint at the club.

  • East Perth have signed former West Coast Eagle Hamish Brayshaw for two seasons, to the end of 2023. The Royals have also signed Tom Wallis, son of Essendon premiership player Dean for 2022 and have secured the signature of former Sydney Swans' player Elijah Taylor for 2022 in a direct swap with ruckman Ajang Ajang who heads to Perth.
  • The WAFC originally scrapped the WAFLW Reserves but sensationally reinstated the competition earlier this month after a backlash from several clubs. The WAFLW Reserves competition will therefore continue in 2022 while West Perth was granted a WAFLW League license for 2022 as well.
  • Claremont has signed Ronin O'Connor for 2022 and 2023, returning to the club after spending time in the AFL.
  • Subiaco midfielder/forward Rowen Powell has retired. Powell played 52 games with the Lions and has been forced to retire due to concussion concerns having sustained several concussions throughout his career and recent medical advice advised he hang up the boots.
  • Perth have signed former West Coast Eagle Brayden Ainsworth for three seasons, securing him at the Demons until the end of 2024.
  • West Perth have gone back to the future, signing Darren Harris as their coach for Season 2022. Harris played in the Falcons' 1995 premiership and also coached the club to the flag in 2003.
  • Several clubs are circling delisted East Fremantle product Tom Joyce who has returned to WA after spending time with the Brisbane Lions in the AFL. The Sharks currently lead the chase for Joyce with several other clubs interested in signing the midfielder for next season.
  • East Fremantle have signed Jesse Crichton for 2022. Crichton spent time with Fremantle in the AFL and returns to the Sharks after a five year break from the WAFL.
  • East Fremantle will play home matches at the WACA for 2022 and 2023 with East Fremantle Oval undergoing a major redevelopment. The WACA will be known as "Shark Park" for this period under an agreement between East Fremantle and the WACA. The last WAFL match played at the venue was the 1994 Qualifying Final between East Fremantle and West Perth.
  • West Coast Eagles have been readmitted to the WAFL with the potential partial alignment with East Perth falling through. It's predicted the Eagles will have to pay $600,000 for a license in the competition next year and will spend at least the next three seasons in the WAFL.
  • The WAFL clubs remain divided with the competition unable to agree on how to split up the $600,000 license fee from West Coast Eagles. Several clubs want the money to boost the competition's salary cap to $250,000 in order to ward off raids from country football clubs and other state league clubs outside WA.
  • Claremont have lost Jake Patmore after just one season back at the club with Patmore moving to South Australia to play in the SANFL.
  • Former Fremantle rookie Jarvis Pina has signed with Swan Districts for 2022. The former Peel Thunder product played 15 games with the Thunder in 2019 and 2021.
  • Subiaco have signed former Fremantle player Stefan Giro for 2022 and 2023. Giro played 14 games with the Dockers at AFL level but was delisted in August 2021.
  • Former West Coast Eagle Mark Hutchings will play at West Perth for the next three seasons, signing with the Falcons until the end of 2024. Hutchings played 120 games at the Eagles, including the 2018 premiership. The Falcons have also signed former East Perth player Mitch Dobson for 2022, Dobson played 35 games in five years with the Royals.
