Joel Selwood has highlighted the efforts of three Geelong newcomers who could be pushing for spots early in the 2022 AFL season after a ripping start to pre-season.

Geelong midfielder Cooper Stephens will be one of several youngsters aiming to get exposure to senior football next year and will be given the opportunity as soon as he is ready.

That is the message from Cats skipper Joel Selwood, who has echoed the words of new development coach Matthew Egan that young players will get the chance to play at AFL level when they show they are capable.

Selwood has liked what he has seen from Stephens, who has had two injury-interrupted seasons in Covid-affected years, and said he would be one of several Cats looking to put their hands up for AFL game time in 2022.

“He (Stephens) was one of a number of boys, with probably Francis Evans and Nick Stevens who attacked the pre-season pretty hard,” Selwood said.

“They didn’t play a lot of footy last season and Cooper was different again because he had an ankle fix up, so they were pretty keen to hit the ground running and be in front of individuals who were coming back and to do that work.

“Gryan (Miers) was another one who probably didn’t play as much footy as what we did in the years before, but everyone will be jostling for spots which is what we need. It was good what Matt Egan said about how we will play the young players, they just have to make sure they are good enough.

“So he put the young boys on notice and wasn’t shy in saying it to the public, that if you are good enough, you will be ready to go.”

Selwood praised Egan and fellow former Cat James Kelly for the work they have already undertaken since arriving back at Geelong following time away from the club working in other roles in the AFL industry.

“They have come back well rounded after going off on their own journeys,” he said.

“They have come back with ideas and great energy and they have an understanding of how this football club has been run and will have a mixed view on how they can take this footy club forward.

“So far though they have been exceptional getting to work straight away and doing all the planning for what is ahead. But the whole coaching group has been great, to be honest, how they have worked together and when we come back in January we will be ready to go.”

I’m hoping cooper can have a real go this year, he’s struggled with injury for a long time.If he’s impressing, why not give him a game? Any news on the draftees?

It is a reasonably big problem - it's being reported that there maybe as many as 200 players across the AFL who have covid. Meaning that it is highly unlikely that it is just Hawkins affected at Geelong. All will have to isolate for at least 7 days and in many cases longer. This will probably continue to play havoc through pre-season and possibly into the season proper.

It is unlikely that any player will be severely impacted, but covid does have a habit of sapping your energy, so yeah we will be impacted, but then so will every other team. I guess it is a matter of who best handles this.
