Good season for the reserves, top 4 spot locked in.
Congrats to Jeremy Laidler, coaching staff and players. :)

He isn't as an outside player like he has always been played in the AFL.
Basically, there's no-one in the senior mids that you'd give less time to, to accommodate Bell. If we lose an inside mid, you'd probably shuffle things around (more time for Paps, Heeney, a bit for Stephens and Florent), bring Campbell, Cunners, Wicks, or Ronke in. Even if you brought in a direct replacement (which we wouldn't), you'd pick Roberts or Sheldrick.

Because he’s just not quite AFL standard.
Bell is very athletic and a good gut runner and gives 100% every game but is indecisive at times. Kiss of death at AFL level as Dean Towers and others can attest to. Instinct. Inside Mid is probably the most difficult from that point of view.
He does CBAs in VFL but I think more as outlet or sometimes defensive. I'm happy to keep him on the list as a good honest VFL player who can do a role if needed. Sets an example for the kids.

Just finished the second half after I had to head out at HT, and wowee - that escalated quickly! I had to double check I was on the right game still as it went from this tight tussle in the first half to a free flowing blitz in the second!

Among the standouts for me were:
  • Our two young forwards - Amartey's leading and McLean's pack marking are both exceptional at this level.
  • Warner Jr. and Shipley were very impressive with their constant run and drive.
  • Ronke was clever and looked dangerous all day.

But the most exciting for me was Campbell. He didn't get huge numbers, but he was the Swan out there who looked "too good" for the VFL. He played like a veteran having a required hit-out on return from injury. Tough, dynamic, clean.

On the flipside, I still want to see more from Sheldrick & Roberts who look like fine mids and get a lot of the ball, but they're not hurting the opposition much. Looking forward to seeing if they can add some strings to their bows.

Great win though against good opposition. Like the seniors, our reserves are flying!
