GWS love taking our assistants. Buchanan, Schneider and Johnson. Now Kenneally and Laidler. Wonder what odds on McVeigh and / or JPK coaching our VFL side? Given the number of young kids we have, couldn't think of a better combo than these two.

I always thought he was a terrific development coach when in charge of our reserves and tended to throw players around to see how they performed in different roles, but also so the players could get a better understanding of various positions.
I look at Laidler and I just don't see the same focus, he seems much more result orientated.

I guess the argument could be made we have an exciting crop of youngsters and Laidler had a hand in their development.

But I mentioned Bell, who will probably delisted in the near future, as an example where Laidler could have tried something;
... he's played pretty much exclusively as a midfielder in the seconds. I would have liked to see him tried as a lockdown small defender. May not have worked, but worth a shot I would have thought.

IMO Bell would never have broken into our 1sts in a midfield role, so why not give him a chance elsewhere on the field where he might have better prospects?

Be great, if unlikely, to have Rhyce back, but the next development/reserves coach has to be comfortable that results, whilst nice, are not his main focus, it's preparing players for the senior team.

There was a recent Dalrymple audio where he was very consistent on putting players in unfamiliar or uncomfortable positions in their development years. He provided an example of Deledio or Cotchin playing small defender, I can't remember exactly who, but he said you need to grow them in other areas, put them in unfamiliar positions to see how they perform/react. He said you know what they can do, see what else they can/cannot do, perform in unfamiliar territory. Was a great audio if someone can remember it/find it.

Whilst I completely agree with what you've said re Laidler, I think a lot of the reason he was more result oriented over Shaw could be because he coached in the VFL as opposed to the NEAFL.
