Bowes is in that age bracket of what they've talked about wanting (he'll be 25 in Jan next year), but the question may be do we have a list spot next year to bring him in and if we're massively front loading Rankine and maybe another player or two next year and the year after would we have the space to absorb a big backend deal in the same period.

If list spots are limited there's probably other areas we'd have as bigger priorities and I really don't believe the Suns are giving away 7 and Bowes without expecting something decent in return.

If we don't have the list spots to fit in someone like Bowes when he falls into our lap we are incompetent. There are two dozen players I would instantly delist to have him in our squad

I agree in regards to number of list spots. If we are serious about rebuilding and a player like him at his age is available (and willing to come to SA) you just do what it takes to open up a list spot. Unless the money he is owed is just ridiculous.

I think the AFL was specifically thinking about GCS when they announced this type of trade will be approved by them this year......

"It’ll allow teams to off-load unwanted salaries to cashed-up rivals to clear tight caps for minimal returns in draft capital or otherwise."

I wonder if this is a once off 'embargo' while it suits an AFL owned club or will it go on next year and so on?

Where's the interest coming from re Bowes? Appreciate he's got talent and wouldn't say no if he was keen to come to the club. I feel he's a very similar player to TD..not sure we need another mid sized defender though?

No hes more of a Def-Mid - a poor mans version of callum mills not so much doedee from what I've seen

The issue is the 800k per annum.

The thing worth remembering is that he'd need to want to come here, which I find hard to believe possible. He's already getting paid a lot, he isn't from here and we aren't competing for a flag. Besides being a lock for best 22 we wouldn't have a lot of draw for someone like him.

if we can't afford him then we've screwed our cap savagely.

Yeah, but you can't just do that.

Everyone wants us to get younger - the flip side of that is kids need time to work out what they have.

We've stripped the list of older players and there really aren't that many mature players that were given long extensions. Maybe McPherson, but even he got a pretty standard extension.

If Bowes comes across, can’t his contract be renegotiated? We aren’t locked in to the terms GC currently have. Maybe instead of $1.6M over 2, renegotiate something over 3-4.

It can be re-negotiated but he's not going to accept losing his backended $ that are owed to him. You can spread the pain over subsequent years, but it would include paying his value as a player in thise years as well.

Lets not paint over the fact that GC want to have one last crack at rankine with these $ they save on bowes. I think they are kidding themselves its only about money but...

if they offer more to him and it changes his mind then get luck to them. If only Carlton had done it with Gibbs.

He might need to accept that he isn’t worth what GC are paying him to extend his AFL career. Can’t see anyone taking him on at $800k a year, even with pick 7 attached.

Bowes has been playing in defence in a similar role as Mitch Hinge. Very little difference in their output, unless we thought he'd be better suited to a different role there is nothing to suggest he'd be an upgrade based on results to date.

Why does he want to do that?

He’s already earned that back ended money by working cheap in the early years of the deal.

The point is that he can stay at Suns and get the money due to him and then earn his performance worthy wage next contract. So any deal needs that factored into the equation. You're effectively buying draft capital with otherwise free cap space. Any club is free to offer him whatever they want, but ignoring what he's owed over the next 2 years won't help you get the player at the pick discount.

Well that's an interesting rumour. Red mist is Sanders!! Presumable his alt account for after he's had a few cones...
