The clubs words suggested a refresh, but their actions were the complete opposite.

In a similar way they tried to undersell the impact of the camp, but knew the culture was completely fried - hence the appointment of Nicks.

I can understand it too - pretty hard to sell a rebuild after going Grand Final in 2017, to missing the finals by one game in 2018 and missing the finals by two games in 2019.

And then losing not a single player of note to the best 22 end of 2019 and winning the spoon 2020. That’s the reverse Sando spike.

Rejuvenation was the phrase we were using

Were the teams we fielded in 2022 younger than line ups we fielded in 2020 and 2021?

Round 1 teams
2022
23 years 10 months
58.9 games

2021
24 years 8 months
66.2 games

2020
25 years 4 months
94.0 games

I think the realisation came mid-2020 that we needed to cut deeper, go younger and accept pain for longer.

2020 we definitely weren’t rebuilding. If contracts were accepted we’d still have had Sauce, Hugh and Keath on the list. And all that has happened since is we pushed out Crouch because we thought pick 2 was on the cards. Everything else has been natural attrition of players with nothing left or leaving via free agency. We’ve not made a single proactive move aside from pushing crouch out. So probably a good thing.

Huh? Eddie Betts wasn't a best 22 player? Top 15 in the AFL in goals, top 20 in tackles inside 50 and top 20 in AFL for goal assists.

Alex Keath wasn't best 22? Our 3rd highest goal scorer wasn't best 22? Greenwood wasn't a best 22 player?

You still view the club as though Neil Craig is still in charge. I am 90% you are mental abilities are at the same stage as Rory Sloane's footballing career.

Another successful delivery of a 5 year plan.

Hey - we had a pretty successful plan implemented at the end of 2014.

New CEO, Coach and Captain talked up a 5 year plan in 2014 in which our premiership window would open in 2017. Was a pretty fantastic 3 years and headed in the right direction before we cocked it up.

I have seen some things on this forum but Balme coming for a lesser role than Kelly? FFFFMD

No disrespect to Kelly but I know how I'd react to my employer trying to get a more senior, successful person, who did my exact job, into the organisation I worked at.
Neil Balmes job at Richmond for years has been "Senior Club Advisor".

Does that sound like Kelly's role?

Balme wasn't coming for a hands-on, full-time job. He was coming to advise and for strategic leadership.

Offering shitty short term contracts is the clubs way of pushing players out.

I don’t agree with this method and it would be my biggest knock on Reid

And we wanted Dmac to go around again this year. Even with a jam packed list.
So .....far from being delisted, DMac outlasted all the naysayers .....Club wanted yet another year ....but elite coaching beckoned. :)

Love ya mate but that was last year ;)

So this was season 2 without him? I swear it’s been 1 year only. But these beta blockers seem to be impacting my cognitive skills. Put a cup of milk in the freezer instead of the microwave the other day. Having lunch with missus and just threw away a winning tab ticket.

I recall Fagan tried to sell the idea afterwards that we had a mysterious, never before mentioned 5 year plan that had just ended and was successful against unspecified criteria

Not sure that it was accepted at true though?

This one:

Fagan: Do you remember what was in it? Might be good for Shutts to release a recap and tick off all of our achievements before we launch the new one. Remind people that despite this season we’ve actually been rolling along ok mostly. I mean, what we’ve achieved in women’s football alone is the envy of every other club in the competition and something of which we can be rightfully proud.

Chapman: I’m pretty sure that wasn’t in there. We didn’t even know women's football was a thing when we wrote it. That's an achievement above and beyond the strategic plan. Also shows how useless these documents are really. Women’s football lobs on your doorstep and you react. Covid the same. You can’t plan for these things one year out let alone five.

Yeah, that one! 😂😂

There were several interviews where Fages and Walsh talked about building to 2017 and that was when our list would be in the magical window.

In about 2017, doesn’t sound quite the measured march on the summit.

Particularly as it was a 1 year thing, and I’m pretty sure the plan wasn’t to tear it down straight away ;)

Oh no doubt.

But once again - The benefit of hindsight allows us to see what's true and not with regards to club speak. Walsh knew where our list was at and identified it perfectly. Suggested we would be in the bracket to contend in 2017 which is exactly what happened.

IMO - the club has done plenty wrong over the journey, but they got it right in 2014 with the appointments and the strategy.

They also did the right thing beginning in August of 2019. They called for a complete external review, Fired the head coach, fired Burton and Campo, changed captain, cleared out 8 senior players to begin the rebuild and created a new head of cultcha.

For me this is a massive 12 months for the club. I personally don't think that Nicks is the right guy to lead us to the next step. As tragic as it is - I think the best thing for the club is a 4-5 win season.

That way we get rid of Nicks at the end of 2023 - have another year of development into our young list and then bring in a coach who can take us to the next step. Happy to keep Sloane as Captain this year and then transition to our new coach/captain combo. Looking at the list - I think that our list profile and age will be just slightly younger than our rd 1, 2015 side. New coach comes in and we make finals in 2024/2025 and really contend in 2026.
