Butts first 40 games have been very very good and he has had a much tougher situation to be thrown into than Talia & Rutten.

Dont forget that Trucks first 60 games came from 2003 - 2006 when we were one of the best teams in the competition. He had Bassett and Ben Hart as key defenders to learn from and play alongside.

Talias first 50 games were across 3 seasons where we finished 14th, 2nd, 11th and he had Rutten to learn from.

Poor Butts got thrown into the deep end as our #1 key defender in a terrible team with no senior KPD to help him grow. He is doing fantastically well.

Great points.

And that brings me back to us clearly keeping a sore Doedee on the pitch because of his experience I think. A lot of people just mindlessly talk about ‘just get him to 50 games asap, just get the games into the kids’ but if they’re not surrounded by at least some experience on game day, it can all fall apart. The kids aren’t just looking at these players ‘performance’, they’re looking for a leading voice, directions, guidance etc..’

I’m not sure if we’ve ever been this light on for experience down back in a long, long time.

Fans have decided that Murphy is a player that they want to bitch about, but he's obviously doing what the coaching team need from that role better than any alternative because he's first 22. He's not just depth.

Hopefully Rachele replaces him - but he's not getting selected because he's the coaches son. It's because of what he offers in comparison to the other options.

Even the biggest hater could see that Murphy and McHenry place a lot more pressure at the contest than Cook and Sholl do currently.

Is that enough to hold their place in the side? Obviously it is currently, and hopefully that changes as our squad improves.
I wouldn't mind this if it actually lead to scoring or stopped the opposition breaking away from half break.

The problem is it doesn't.

Although both of them do seem to have an endeavour to chase, they are both very dumb chasers being led around like a dog on a leash.

Betts is an example of a very smart pressure forward. He probably doesn't have the stamina or speed of the others, but he picks his moments and it usually always leads to the ball being spilt and or shots on goals. The other advantage to an offensive threat as a small forward is the defender will always stay close to you making it easier to pressure on the turnover.

It's another tactic from Nick's which may sound plausible in theory but in real world application does not work.

I don't think many people here care what the coaches think or value because they haven't proven themselves to be good at coaching yet.

The problem might be that not only is Murphy getting a game, but that the coaches believe what he offers is valuable

Worse is we could have given Worrell a good month of AFL footy, to see if A he could be a good AFL player, B if we want to keep him.

Tom said it was a mutual decision, it should have been made for him a few weeks ago.

Whether he's injured or not is totally irrelevant. I'm not sure why it even enters the conversation. Fact is his performance didn't warrant him being selected ahead of the next in line given we're supposedly rebuilding. "Tom, you're not being selected on output, whether it's the 2s or rehab is up to you". What's so hard about that?

Whether the decision gets made by the coaches, player, fitness boss, medical staff or a combination of all... we've demonstrated that what we're doing is wrong.

Heck, we ended Talia's career.

Need to reassess how we manage sore players.

Brown and Sloane currently cooked. Even Tex needs rests to maintain his best form. It's just that he is such high quality that he can still impact by kicking goals even if he can't move freely. The honest triers that we love are crap if they're not near their physical best. And that's why our 30 year olds tend to become bog average, their weapon was only ever effort and fitting into our system, as their body starts degenerating all we're left with is their experience and continuity credits.

Edit - Keays is a total liability as a primary mid at 22 possessions. Better off with anyone else in there getting it 15 times. He's all effort and nothing else, so he need# to get it a lot to have any sort of positive impact.

Apart from Media Clickbait Mayo there really is little evidence Crouch has had a poor attitude.

Still think we are better off without him, the game has moved on from his style of play.

I think it getting to the media was more a personal hatchet job on Nix. It didn't embarrass the club in any way, but it made Nix look a duplicitous fool.

Obviously Murphy does some of the non negotiables that they felt others weren't doing, such as showing actual genuine endeavour.

if you start from the basis that our selectors never ever make mistakes, then you can manufacture pretty much anything to support their decisions. The above is proof of that.

Strachan HAS been given games.

Taylor had one very good game. Was okay before that after being injured for a lot of the year.

Sholl? Yeah, he and Worrell probably deserves games

Strachan wasn't given games, he got games he earned and deserved. He deserves more, ROB is being given games.

And then got dropped when he didn’t deserve it, twice.

hi mate , im on the "Punting " section of BigFooty. Thats where I regularly post

So we haven’t had a serious issue with player retention?

I think it was pretty well known among AFL circles that we preferred to reward senior players for their “service” over a number of years, rather than projecting and paying young players for what they may become.

I recall Reid saying that a heap of cap space would be available after the retirement of 3 of our stars. "Very well paid boys" was what he said. Now, why would players struggling in their final year in the game be very well paid?
