I wouldn't mind this if it actually lead to scoring or stopped the opposition breaking away from half break.

The problem is it doesn't.

Although both of them do seem to have an endeavour to chase, they are both very dumb chasers being led around like a dog on a leash.

Betts is an example of a very smart pressure forward. He probably doesn't have the stamina or speed of the others, but he picks his moments and it usually always leads to the ball being spilt and or shots on goals. The other advantage to an offensive threat as a small forward is the defender will always stay close to you making it easier to pressure on the turnover.

It's another tactic from Nick's which may sound plausible in theory but in real world application does not work.

it's not just a Nix thing though, it's an AFC overarching strategy. We've been trying to apply randomised pressure using a small forward that's not ball orientated since Petrenko. Betts was a good pressure forward because his sole intent was getting the footy and when it didn't work he was close enough to get to or very near who did. He wasn't tasked with bolting from 30m away to try and apply pressure.

Fans have decided that Murphy is a player that they want to bitch about, but he's obviously doing what the coaching team need from that role better than any alternative because he's first 22. He's not just depth.

Hopefully Rachele replaces him - but he's not getting selected because he's the coaches son. It's because of what he offers in comparison to the other options.

Even the biggest hater could see that Murphy and McHenry place a lot more pressure at the contest than Cook and Sholl do currently.

Is that enough to hold their place in the side? Obviously it is currently, and hopefully that changes as our squad improves.

I get what you're saying about the pressure part but if these players keep on getting picked, when do they stop getting picked? Before you know it, they'll have played 100 games and never get dropped.

They're stopgaps, and hopefully Pedlar can get himself right because he along with Rachele make the forward more dangerous while still putting on pressure. I cringe whenever I see McHenry or Murphy line up for goal.

Butts is a lock down type player. He doesn't have much offence to his game and his kicking isn't overly good. I think when we get another KPD he's probably depth.

IMO he's no worse than Talia was at this stage of his career. Every team needs a good lockdown key defender. We had Truck. Then we had Talia. Butts is in that mold.

Pretty much except I think butts is a better kick and has more athleticism than Talia. And it’s quite possible he reaches Daniels, 1v1 strength

Not sure - I blocked him years ago. I certainly don't just believe things that randoms post on the internet, especially if it sounds so implausible as "Yeah, we're playing him because he's experienced, not because he offers anything else."

But hey, maybe he did say that. I'll happily believe it if there was a link.

I don't really give a hoot what other people think. I base my criticism on watching games and having some understanding as to what entails contested pressure. I'm not concerned with Sholl or Cook either as I've been quire vocal over Scholls squibing and half steps that do my head in,but I'd still probably prioritise a spot for Scholl on the teamsheet over either of those two mythological contested beasts and the imaginary impact they have on the play.

Sorry, I should have written 'Murphy inclusion'. He spoke of experience. It hits a nerve with some people if that's the reason they are picked.

I'm not arguing for or against the inclusion of Newchurch but Nicks' reasoning was fair enough.

It's well known the crows don't manage their salary cap well and that we lowball the wrong players.

I doubt we are currently lowballing players given our young squad & need to pay at least 95% of the cap.

It's been mentioned by coaches for years and supported as valid by the exact likes of Kristof and BACCS types, I'm not sure why he's questioning it now. Especially having been stated quite plainly.
