You'd win a premiership sooner doing that than drafting a ruck with pick 2.
Depends what the draft throws up at your pick. We were very unlucky a couple of times where the decent mid was a pick or two before us. One day hopefully the luck runs our way. In saying that Hamish majorly botched McAsey, McHenry, Jones just to name a few.

Couple minor things
We spoke to JHF. Too many red flags.
Apparently this is also the case with Phillipou. No idea what they are though.
Also, we see Thilthorpe as our future 1st Ruck
I'm not confident that as a club and specifically in relation to list management that we properly understand risk and reward. Simply saying "too many red flags" sounds like a lazy approach which either by design or in practical terms will exclude many (most?) highly talented but not choirboy type prospects.

If you retrofit this apparent approach to many past/current champions of the game how many would we seemingly put a line through.

But let's be honest, calling him the No.1 ruck for the Crows and him being a great pure ruckman are likely going to be two different things.

I personally think he'll be a more than serviceable Ruckman, it's just everything else he can being to the table is why he's pick 2 material.

While they might have won the flag last year, they are an extreme outlier when it comes to having a gun ruck in a premiership side. This year their forward stocks are worse and could really use someone like Lynch over having the best ruck in the competition (which is a low value position)

However the premier almost always has one of the top bunch of key forwards in the league

I would be extremely disappointed if Thilthorpe became our lead ruck instead of developing him into a gun key forward
Could pretty easily argue that they're an outlier because Gawn is himself an outlier. The analysis is a bit derivative. Dont think Melbourne win that flag without Gawn last year. He was immense, top 2 pick for that any day of the week.

I'd prefer us to spend big on players who stay at our club, AND who become the best players in the comp in their position. TT has a bit to work on but the odds are better than they would be picking another bloke from moggs

Yep, the modern day Pavlich is definitely something you don't want.

But that's not the question. It's whether they'd win the flag without Gawn AND instead with another top end player in a position like key forward (or midfield)

From the Bulldogs board

Crows asking if Jordan Sweet would like a trade home

Gives them more ruck back up after Frampton will likely move on

Sweet pretty set in Melbourne so would take a bit to get him over the line to return home

Dogs hoping to sign James Rowe as a delisted free agent but would happy trade a late pick to secure James and a future pick

So Port are interested in securing the Irishman, Connor McKenna.
My biggest take out of that article
It comes after Essendon launched a massive $800,000 per-season-deal for Suns young gun Izak Rankine, who’s now headed for the Adelaide Crows, while the Bombers are also eying a key forward.

So if two clubs bidding come up with the same price 🤔

Perhaps the VFL media can lay off now

What they got was what they got. Gawn and a flag.

I dont think Melb would change a thing if given the chance. Just that rolling out a hypothetical which ignores actual success, seems weird. It isn't ideal if TT turns out to be just a ruck, agree with you on that, because no doubt we drafted him to kick goals. But it's hardly a disaster if indeed he does come on and become something great

I'd be filthy if we turned away from JHF or Phillipou because of 'red flags'.
You get elite talent and make it work. There is simply no substitute for that level of talent.
We would have traded Dusty away and missed out on premierships if he'd been with us if we had that attitude. 10 'good players, good boys' don't make up for one 'elite talent, a bit troublesome'.

Phillipou is an interesting one. He started basketball with Sturt and I remember hearing whispers about 'issues' with his family. They wanted to be heavily involved in everything. He then moved to play with North (Sturt's main rival). Similar whispers heard.
His family also always kept him out of any involvement in high level basketball programs, despite him being easily the best player in his age group.
I'd select him though.

If true, i think the family stuff is a really really dumb reason to be not picking up a player.

Yes and No.

Wouldn't be the first or the last promising athlete to not meet their potential because of overbearing parents.

Hell, who can forget Al "money man who loves bad bitches" Lever and his public sooks every time Jake got dropped. Hard to see how that didn't already exacerbate a fragile situation.

By "red flags" are we talking:

- Drink driving, like Coleman medalist Charlie Curnow or 4x premiership player, 3x All Australian Luke Hodge?

- Domestic violence, cheating and drug abuse like 7x All Australian, 2x premiership player Wayne Carey, often called one of the best players of all time?

- Drug use, like 6x All Australian, Brownlow medal and premiership winning Ben Cousins; or more recently the All Australian small forward Tyson Stengle?

- Coming from a dodgy family, like dual Brownlow medalist, 8x All Australian, 2x premiership player and arguably one of the best players of all time, Gary Ablett Jr; or 3x premiership, 3x Norm Smith, 4x AA, Brownlow medalist Dustin Martin?

- Punching people many times, like 750 goal, 4x All Australian, premiership player Barry Hall?

- Giving heroin to a teenager leading to her death, like the 6th highest goal kicker of all time, 3x Coleman medalist, 4x AA Gary Ablett Sr?

- Assaulting people, stealing and sexual misconduct like 2x Coleman medalist, 3x All Australian Brendan Fevola?

- Cheating on your wife with your mate's partner, like 3x All Australian Garry Lyon?
