He is pretty good at getting the ball but can't use it and his kicking disposal generally results in a bad turnover. I don't see him getting a game in the the top 8 sides. He stands out in our side as we have the worst midfield in the league but put him in the Bulldogs, Melb, Geelong, Brisbane midfield and let's see his numbers.

Why do you think Nick's moved him out of the midfield last year? Berry and Laird are our two best mids and Soligo is rising quick. Schoenberg, Taylor and Pedlar will also pass Keays soon. We also have better forward options than Keays developing. The saving grace for Keays is that Ogilvie is not great at picking mids.

He was mostly moved out of the midfield because he was carrying an A/C joint niggle that required surgery at the end of the season.

If we have another down season Nicks is gone. He will be picking out best team and I don't think Sloane is in that.

I highly doubt Sloane will be Capt next year .....simply because Sloane cannot be guaranteed a permanent spot in the 22 .....those days are over & I'm comfortable those tough discussions will be had

As long as Sloane is played on merit ......I'm happy that 2022 was still a year of experimentation, with both players and roles .....2023 has to be "earn your position" .....or get delisted

If Nicks doesn't adopt that philosophy, it'll be to his own detriment

No .....and IMO, Doedee is still the man to be Capt

Sloane will start the season well, fresh, enthusiastic .....but it's amazing how after 5-6 weeks of grind & bumps ....the legs get heavy and he'll fall away in the back half of the season .....hopefully he's managed

Last couple of years, we've see Sloane fall away in backend of games .....we can't have a senior player, only playing 3/4, when the game is up for grabs in the 4th Qtr

He's said in today's paper he wants to be Captain and thinks he's gonna be available for Round 1.

If he's been hinted at that he won't be Captain next year he's certainly not showing it.

It was also in the article, the Club will discuss the Captaincy & may decide to go in a different direction .....all Sloane said was he's keen to retain the title .....he wasn't demanding it

I agree though, he should have put his hand up to relinquish the captaincy .....I think supporters would have been more empathetic to Sloane in 2023 .....he hasn't read the room on this one

Cook is barely up to SANFL standard at the moment. Would require a massive lift from arching him in the SANFL finals

I like him by the way just think he has stagnated badly

Hamill needs to stay in the park and Nank still has a way to go but is promising.

Unlikely any of those three are in front of Keays over the next 2 years

Agree on all fronts.

It's not unusual for a player to stagnate in their second season though, so don't be surprised if Cook takes a big step forwards.

I don't believe Sloane has the legs to run out a full game ......I still believe his best value is as a Defender, where he was Drafted from .....our FWD line is chockers, our DEF is still our weakness with a lot of inexperience, Sloane could bolster

If he's training fit, he will get picked, and they will justify selection as they always have,I.e, Leadership,experience,pressure/hardness whatever. I get, and agree with what your saying, but we have to be realistic. He's the Captain of the club.

We aren't there yet where we can make the hard, yet obvious and proactive calls otherwise we wouldn't be hearing the pre-emptive, softening rhetoric from Rory already.

At best, they give him enough rope to hang himself with ala V.B.

That's the point. If we keep him Captain, then we box ourselves in and HAVE to pick him.
If he's not Captain, then we can pick on merit.

He's just not an automatic first 22 now, unless he is Captain.

It's sad, but it's the reality.

The only way I see it is if we go with only one BIG and use Worrell and Doedee as the second tall defenders.

That could leave:
Jones Butts Worrell
Smith Doedee Sloane

Not the worst option.

Sides are playing smaller FWD lines .....that's a tall DEF you've named

I believe Jones will play more Wing ....and I think they'll persevere with Parnell, which is where I believe Sloane could assist the lad

Structures are going to be dependent on whether we have 5 interchanges or not ....I can see Sloane rotating off the bench into a few roles, based on need / state of game

Hard to see Worrell playing all 23 match's too ?

“Just let him be captain” is anti high performance and team first. Him not being captain is an obvious decision, he’s not exactly overseen a non-shit player culture.
