Josh Carmichael has been told by Blues that they will take him if he is still there at our pick.
(Fair chance he won’t be there but I am hoping he will)

Country football to AFL list in 6 months. Not a bad effort.
WTAF? Why? When we have mids that are fighting for spots and a decimated defence?

He is not getting to us so moot point, however, it is about replenishing the list. Of the uncontracted players we will be assessing need a nd upside, along with size of contract and it’s bearing on our Total Player Payments. Not looking to argue on who will get moved on, but Dow may be trade bait, even though contracted has some decisions to make, Setterfield has lost ground in the pecking order and is not getting games on the inside, even in the twos. Having been poached from GWS, it is likely he would have a $300k plus contract. Then there is Fogarty who falls in the Gibbons category having his best position as an inside mid, but at the higher level too small and behind a handful of small forward candidates. Traded from Cats so would be on a reasonable contract.

To take Carmichael, we would get a highly rated 22 y.o. who has “come from the clouds” from country footy to SANFL and interstate footy with big upside. To get him or similar, basically a physically mature player with upside on bottom dollar is great list management if we are quitting multiple midfield options at year’s end.

So not WTAF. It is no good grabbing talls for the sake of it. They must actually be AFL quality. Our picks are blowing out to something like 15 and 20, (not actual, just range). Covid closures may mean a better group than previously available, but would be beyond precedent if more than five of the draftees become AFL regular players going forward. MSD is a “free hit”, but plenty of fool’s gold out there.

Most of us would like to shore up our KPP stocks, but they have to be available and good enough. Don’t be surprised is no shiny new targets are still available at our picks and we reward blokes from our twos with an opportunity. Will Hayes is proven quality in the range of Lipinski who has been a mainstay at Magpies since leaving Dogs.

Best available in this situation or even in the main draft, is always an interesting call

Normally recruiters have players ranked in groups, rarely with a player that is an absolute standout over others

If, by the time our selection comes around, there are 2 - 3 players of similar quality, but 1 fits more of our needs, the selection is an easier decision

Carmichael is arguably not 'best available' but 'best available for now'. Whatever the thinking, I still don't understand the need for the draft guarantee. I don't know what purpose it serves, other than a kind of magical thinking that it will affect the outcome in our favour.

Be annoyed if by time of our pick, anyone of any possible realistic use to play this season in case needed for key defence or ruck duties is not there and then forced only pick for future than the now.
This could happen.

I really doubt it because a fair number of selections before us will be future prospects or midfielders. Unlikely more than say half a dozen mature age (~22+yo) talls are taken before us and no way there aren't at least that many prospects out there.
IE the difference between sixth and seventh best isn't the difference between AFL ready or not. Next man up.

Reckon Setters would have been on +$400K mark, that seems to be the going rate after a couple of years on the GWS list. We certainly didn’t get a good ROI on that trade.

Re: Carmichael, if we could have nabbed him, and we’re after Amon as a wing, that could have been the position filled. A bonus with a player that can roost the pill 50-60m, not to mention goal scoring ability from outside the fwd50.
