Out of interest, 400k would be in the range of about 15th highest paid player on a team's list on average (for 2011).

Or desperate...which Collingwood are for a key forward. If another club offers a contract he'd be silly to say no to, then that club is being a little silly![]()

Agree with a lot in your post above.I’m neither here nor there on McStay staying or going.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer a two genuine ruck set up, though I would like our second ruck to be more capable forward, a la a young Ryder or Rowan Marshall.
With Hipwood healthy, I wouldn’t necessarily have McStay in the team.
Nor am I keen on paying Dan more than $400k per.
If each of your best 22 is on $400k per, then your best 22 is worth have $8.8m. As Mitch has mentioned on his podcast, the role players in the team don’t even make league average salary. This is balanced out by the “stars” and bigger names in the team being on higher salaries.
Dan is a role player. Similar to Mitch, Starcevich, Ah Chee and McCarthy, and a lot of the fringe players outside the best 22.
If Dan is being offered 6 years, he should be taking it and not looking back from a financial perspective.
I think I agree with every thing in this.Agree with a lot in your post above.
The main points for me is that:
Dan at his best and dialed in to play is a weapon and a headache for opposition defenders. (better than a role player for sure)
Dan is 27 years old in 2 months time and his inconsistency in the entire time at the club (142 games) would be concerning for the club.
A 6 year contract for any 27 year old player such as Dan is not smart from any club. Reiks desperation to me.
A 6 year contract offer to Dan is something he would/should seriously consider as that is a very good deal for him.
If I were Dan's manager I would be advising him to take the offer.
If I were Brisbane, I would definitely not match the offer.
I like Dan to stay.. 6 years at 27 you have to think about it.
Although I really think we need 2 rucks.
So when Hipwood back be interesting what we do.
Be interesting tonight how Fort goes #1 ruck and how he goes against Hawkins. Which Oscar struggles with
who else is a free agent this year and next?Missed most it, but SEN were talking about McStay free agency before.
who else is a free agent this year and next?
We’re not getting an offer, he’s a free agent.Dan has unfulfilled potential, at 27 I think its risky betting on his reaching his full potential.
I think we should let him go for the best offer we can get.
I don’t see the point in having 2 rucks in the team if the second ruck can’t be effective while not in the ruck. I think it’s just wasting a valuable space. I don’t think it’s feasible to have 3 talls plus a resting ruckman which is what I worry Fages may go with once Hippy is back. One thing I've also come around to is the 2 ruck team.
It really counts towards the end of games. But your second ruck needs to be dangerous if resting.
400K for Dan is more than enough and if someone wants to give him an extended contract on a lot more then so be it.
I don't think he's finished top 12 in our B/F after 9 years but I'm hopeful he's still on the improve.
you also say the same with the second ruck, having someone who at best breaks even is a problem. even if only 15-20% of the timeI don’t see the point in having 2 rucks in the team if the second ruck can’t be effective while not in the ruck. I think it’s just wasting a valuable space. I don’t think it’s feasible to have 3 talls plus a resting ruckman which is what I worry Fages may go with once Hippy is back.
Hippy is so athletic though he could be utilised elsewhere as a wing or mid or something.
I thought Daniher played some terrific games as second ruck. His ruck work not so much but his work around the ground was really good. Only thing I am worried about with him returning to that second ruck role is what we may lose by having him in the forward 50 full time. He has had a red hot start to the season and he is a genuine chance for the Coleman this season I reckon.I might be remembering it wrong but I didn't think Daniher was a bad option as a second ruck, not great in the contest but good on the ground and got a lot of the ball around the ground. Also gives us a different smaller and faster forward line while he's in the with just McStay and Hipwood as the tall forwards. Pretty sure our record was very good while it was those 3 and Oscar as the ruck. Personally I think it's a near certainty that the structure will be Daniher, McStay and Hipwood with Oscar in the ruck.
First time I’ve ever noticed it, but McStay was using some type of stickie gel on his hands, and having it replenished by the runner during the breaks after each goal. Kept some on the sponsors logo on his left chest, that he could wipe on to his hands.Nine things we learned: 2022's hottest free agent could be a Lion
1. McStay might be the hottest free agent in 2022
With Darcy Moore the latest big name putting pen to paper during the week, the free agency pool is looking a little thin. However, following his performance against Geelong on Friday night, Brisbane's Dan McStay is someone to keep a close eye on. McStay is in the final year of his contract – and says he definitively wants to stay at the Lions – and played arguably the best game of his 143-game career against the Cats. He kicked three goals from 14 disposals that included an equal career-high 11 marks, four of which were contested. The 26-year-old is entering his prime as a key-position forward and sure to demand interest from clubs in his home state of Victoria. – Michael Whiting

Most forwards do it these days.First time I’ve ever noticed it, but McStay was using some type of stickie gel on his hands, and having it replenished by the runner during the breaks after each goal. Kept some on the sponsors logo on his left chest, that he could wipe on to his hands.
Yeah . I've seen the Kings , Lynch etc .Most forwards do it these days.
I don’t think losing him from the 50 for 20% of game time will be too big a deal. We’ve seen how dangerous Charlie can be when it’s his 50 and it’ll take a fair bit of adjustment from opposition teams to switch between Charlie and Joe running the forward 50 for periods of games.I thought Daniher played some terrific games as second ruck. His ruck work not so much but his work around the ground was really good. Only thing I am worried about with him returning to that second ruck role is what we may lose by having him in the forward 50 full time. It has been used for decades at all levels of footy. Not sure how much it helps. It’s like a sticky Vaseline.First time I’ve ever noticed it, but McStay was using some type of stickie gel on his hands, and having it replenished by the runner during the breaks after each goal.
