I'm sorry but no. it was a fail by Lamb. He had 1 job, improve our forward line through the trade period. He didn't. End of discussion.
Who gave him that mandate?

He had multiple jobs, including improving our draft hand - which he did.

He had the job of replacing Jackson - which he did.

He had the job of finding an outside receiver - which he did.

There are multiple ways of improving our forward line. It's not trade period or bust.
bang on

Taking a risk on an outside reciever in Hunter IS an improvement to the forward line in a way. look at Carlton with 2 Coleman Medalists and they still would get low scores and finished 9th (although I do they they'll be good next year). Its not just the forwards themselves, its the gameplan and how the mids kick to them.
An "Average" forward line won the premiership in 2021, and one of those forwards kicked 6 goals, the most of any player in a GF since the 90s.

Yeah, he definitely had a lot on his plate. How did he improve our draft hand though? With Jackson leaving this was inevitable. He still got unders for Jackson though and we left without any elite picks. But being out of contract I understand there is limited leverage but by no means is the Jackson deal a pass mark.

Weideman for 37 was a big pass mark however. I'm not sure whether Hunter is the outside receiver we need. Next season, when we play a team like the pies and they have guys like Crisp, McCreery, De Goey and co streaming through the midfield is Hunter really the guy you want chasing these guys? He's too slow.

How do you improve the forward line if not via the trade period? I mean we can hit the draft which I'm all for as long as everyone understands that its the long term approach.

Bang on.

Before the 2021 season started did danster think our forward line was capable of winning a premiership?

Because with a good game plan and decent delivery it did, and so can our current forward line.

We can also still trade picks to move up the draft and nab a forward this year or next year.

We've got one of the best small forwards and one of the best mid sized forwards in the competition as it is. We just need a half decent return from the talls and we'll be laughing.

This is genuinely the greatest long troll the board has had since I joined. Kudos.
Do you know what trolling means? This is my genuine opinion. Heaven forbid I don't rate Lachie '3rd Round' Hunter or Josh Schache. Or even Ben Brown. Because essentially the Grundy inclusion has meant that the forward line wasn't prioritised. If we also got a forward I would've been much more content with the Grundy inclusion.

You make a good point. Do you think Goodwin will make the change of the game style though? He didn't change it at all during the season. And with the Grundy inclusion it does seem like he just plans on bombing it high, long and slow to uncoordinated forwards and resting ruckman.

The future first and second from the Jackson trade give us significant opportunities to move up the draft order next year in the 'super draft' (wank term, whatever).

Our outside receiver is to generate attacking opportunities, not necessarily to run around chasing the opposition outside mids like it's an AusKick game. We have a defensive zone set up to deal with that. Besides, who was on offer that was faster that we should have somehow got?

I think we're all on board with the long term approach in the draft. As others have mentioned, we can significantly improve it by changing our game style. This is essentially the same forward line that booted an avalanche of goals to win the premiership last year. Fritta and Kozzy can kick a bag each. If we can get some goal kicking from our mids again (Trac, Harmes and Hunter can all deliver this) then we only need an average return from the talls to be scoring heavily enough as a team.

We'd all love a power forward, but given what was offer in the trade period we're clearly much better off filling that hole from the draft and doing everything we can to alter our game plan to get the best out of what we have now.

I think we all share the frustration of not seeing the game plan changed up during the season.

If Grundy plays out of the middle, Gawn forward can work in short patches (and only short patches) if we use him to:
  • decoy lead and draw defenders
  • park in the goal square and either mark (hard even for him to miss from there) or cause general chaos and let Kozzy go for the crumb
I can't be bothered hunting for the links, but pretty sure there's been some after season acknowledgement from the coaching group that we need to make some changes.

Petty may have gone forward way too late to make a difference, but the fact they did it means they at least recognise the problem.

your commitment to the long game is to be commended.

Yeah, I'm already excited about the 'super draft'. Even 1 year out. Having 2 first rounders gives us amazing leverage.

Yeah, there was no-one really on offer. for the outside receiver but I didn't think it was a big deal. I think there's probably a few kids at the draft that could do a good job of that though like Darcy Jones (although he is a WA prospect).

Let's say we offer someone like Georgiadis 900k. Significant overs. He'd definitely come to us for that coin. Instantly our forward line is much more mobile and dangerous. many of our problems are fixed instantly.

But yeah, a lot of pressure is on Goodwin next season to sort out this ball movement stuff. He was clearly too rigid (and dumb) this year to see the problems early enough to make any changes. Now he's got 6 months to sort it out. And be better with match selection.

Yeah, I think Grundy will start in the ruck. And Gawn forward. I just hate having bad kicks for goal in the forward line. It loses games.

Petty forward would be interesting. I'd trial him forward in all of the pre-season games and if its not working then move him back for the proper season.

So we might trade up but there is a good chance we don’t? Bet each way Tom Brown

I would trade #13 for a F1.

It would give the club 3x first round picks and 2x round picks for the 2023 draft. Gives plenty of capital to trade up or try to parlay it into 3x top 25 selections.

It fits with the strategy of wanting to to draft a batch of top propsects in a cluster every other year, similar to the Jackson/Pickett/Rivers draft.

In no surprise to anyone, old mate Knightmare, who has criticised (at length) just about every draft choice that Melbourne has made over the last five years, rated Melbourne as the third worst performer of trade period (including below Hawthorn, St Kilda, Carlton, Sydney, West Coast and Essendon) :$

I do also love how he says Jackson is 'one of the great acquisitions of this trade period'.

When Melbourne drafted him, our list managers were 'irresponsible'. Think he even went to the length of them being 'derelict in their duties' or similar.

I'm sure if Kozzy eventually leaves, the receiving club will be a 'huge winner', despite him calling Pickett a 'rookie list talent'.

Sydney Stack delisted. Yes please.
