Purposely didn't start this until after we finished our finals run but didn't think that I'd now have to trawl through/ignore stories about our finals loss. Ah well...

Remember, this thread is for news articles/possibly tweets if half-reputable and discussion posts will be deleted - feel free to chat about the articles in the trade thread. Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Also I won't be posting stories that break down to "Ex-AFL media personality thinks the Lions should pick up so-and-so" if there's no evidence that we're actually interested in that player.

Dogs land key defender, clubs eye Tigers youngster, Swan to re-sign (Callum Twomey & Riley Beveridge, AFL.com.au, 16/09)

LIONS FREE AGENT STILL WEIGHING FUTURE

BRISBANE defender Darcy Gardiner is set to wait until the end of the club's finals campaign before deciding on his future.

The Lions have tabled Gardiner a long-term offer and he remains determined to stay in Brisbane, but has set his focus solely on football ahead of the club's preliminary final against Geelong on Friday night.

Gardiner has been weighing Victorian interest throughout the campaign, though his position as a restricted free agent would allow the Lions to match any rival offer should he choose to leave.

The 26-year-old has once again been an ever-present for Brisbane throughout this season, playing 20 of a possible 24 games and playing crucial lockdown defensive roles during finals victories over Richmond and Melbourne.

Gardiner is one of just three restricted free agents still yet to re-sign beyond this season, with Collingwood's Jordan De Goey and Sydney's Lance Franklin also still considering their futures.

The Lions expect to lose fellow free agent Dan McStay on a long-term deal to Collingwood at season's end, while veterans Dayne Zorko and Mitch Robinson also remain uncontracted.

Eagles NOT happy as premiership star asks to move; pair of Pies targets speak: Trade Whispers (Ben Cotton & Max Laughton, Fox Sports, 13/09)

MCKENNA ONLY INTERESTED IN VICTORIA RETURN

Irish star Conor McKenna is only interested in a return to the AFL via a Victorian club, reports SEN’s Sam Edmund.

It was revealed last month that the former Bomber was quitting his Gaelic club Tyrone to return to the AFL in 2023, with Geelong, Brisbane and Port Adelaide linked to the 26-year old.

However according to Edmund, McKenna is currently only eyeing a return to Victoria, which would rule the Lions and Power out of the mix.

“I’ve spoken to Brisbane about this, the Lions’ information about this is Conor McKenna wants to come back to Australia, but he doesn’t want to come back to any state, in fact, he wants to come back to Victoria. So that’s the initial feedback from them,” he said on SEN.

“They do have an interest and they have had an interest before, whether they’re playing it down or not, they don’t expect to be a factor when it comes to Connor McKenna.”

It comes after former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley cautioned potential suitors for McKenna, who departed Essendon at the end of 2020 after 79 games with a year to run on his contract due to homesickness.

Geelong veteran and fellow Irishman Zach Tuohy endorsed the club’s pursuit of McKenna, but said he hadn’t made any contact with him.

“I‘m not involved, but I would be interested (in helping get him to the club). He’s a top player,” he said.

“Any good player you can get to the club you want; the more Irish players the better, as far as I‘m concerned. An all-Irish half-backline would be pretty special.

“I haven‘t spoken to him, no. I’m probably a generation or two ahead of him. Maybe a few of the other young Irish boys have.”

Wait and see on flag Hawk, young Lion close to new deal (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge & Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 18/08)

YOUNG LION SET TO SIGN ON

BRISBANE youngster Blake Coleman is heading for a new deal with the club.

The younger brother of Lions defender Keidean was due to come out of contract at Brisbane this year after his initial two-year deal on joining the Lions but is closing in on what is likely to be a one-year extension.

Coleman has had an injury-hit campaign in 2022, including last weekend when he was concussed while playing in the VFL.

The small forward is yet to make his AFL debut after joining the Lions in the 2020 draft as an Academy selection at pick No.24 after Brisbane matched Collingwood's bid for the Queensland product.

The 20-year-old has kicked 22 goals at VFL level this season for the Lions. – Callum Twomey

‘Not sure how’: Suitor’s trade play for Dogs gun questioned amid ‘twitchy’ three-club race (Ben Cotton, Fox Sports, 17/09)

Western Bulldogs gun Josh Dunkley’s call on his future looms as all three clubs pursuing the midfielder’s signature are now officially out of the premiership race.

Brisbane crashed out of the post-season in a 71-point preliminary final loss to Geelong as the Lions now prepare for a busy off-season including their pursuit of Dunkley along with Port Adelaide and his current club.

The Queensland-based team is also looking to secure father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher in the draft, which complicates its play for Dunkley given the Dogs would likely command at least one first-round pick in a trade.

Ashcroft could receive a bid with Pick 1 and Fletcher in the top 20, while the Lions currently hold selections 14, 33, 44 and 69.

Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph revealed on Fox Footy that all three clubs are still in the dark regarding Dunkley’s decision, but questioned how the Lions could pull off the move given their father-son plans.

Josh Dunkley, they’re waiting on him. They haven‘t got any real optimism that he will stay,” Ralph said.

“Certainly the Western Bulldog still think he’s a chance to stay – Port Adelaide are in the race too. I don’t think there’s a strong favourite at this stage

“If they (Brisbane) can get Dunkley in – they’d have to give up a couple of first rounders for him and it’s a lot of outlay in terms of picks. Not sure how they’d do that.

“Lots of movement at the station for the Lions as they work back from a disappointing preliminary final loss.”

Dunkley said earlier this month the prospect of moving closer to family would play a role in his call. His partner, Tippah Dwan, plays for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Suncorp Super Netball competition, however his sister, Lara, is a member of the Queensland Firebirds.

It comes amid suggestions Dunkley could be headed north given how long it’s taking him to reach a decision while the Lions were the last remaining suitor active this season prior to Friday night’s result.

“As of Wednesday morning, the Lions are very comfortable with where their conversations are at,” senior AFL Media journalist Damian Barrett said at this week’s AFL Trade Radio launch.

“We do sometimes at this stage in these periods put two and two together – and the fact that they‘re still alive in the finals and the other destination potentially is Port Adelaide and they’ve been out of action for some time and there’s been no announcement publicly, I think it allows us to think that it’s at least line ball from that perspective.”

The Age reported earlier this month Port’s offer was “considered more attractive” than Brisbane’s, and there’s belief from rival clubs he’s a strong chance to look for a fresh start elsewhere after sitting on a long-term contract offer from the Dogs for months.

Herald Sun reporter Jay Clark revealed clubs are growing more anxious for Dunkley’s impending decision.

“Clubs are starting to get a little bit twitchy for an answer, they would like him to move things on,” Clark said on Triple M.

“Brisbane would love to add another powerful force, another strong body to their midfield. Give Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage another Robin to their Batman.”

As the 25-year old Dunkley doesn’t qualify for free agency, he’d need to be acquired via trade.

McStay gone but Lions see positive future (Shayne Hope, AAP, 17/09)

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan is resigned to losing out-of-contract forward Dan McStay over the off-season after the Lions crashed out of the AFL finals.

McStay went goalless from 10 disposals in the 71-point preliminary final thrashing from Geelong on Friday but was far from the only Brisbane player to have an off night.

The 27-year-old is a free agent and has enjoyed a strong season, kicking 25 goals as a target alongside fellow talls Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood.

McStay has not yet informed the Lions where he will be playing in 2023 but has been linked with a move to fellow preliminary finalists Collingwood.

"I don't know because Dan hasn't told me, but I would suspect if he was going to be a Brisbane player next year we would know that by now," Fagan told reporters.

"If Collingwood's the club, then Collingwood's the club.

"That wouldn't surprise me but we haven't had that conversation."

Brisbane are expected to be active in the trade market as they look to take the next step, having featured in four straight finals series without reaching a season decider.

Western Bulldogs midfielder Josh Dunkley is one mooted target, but Fagan was not prepared to comment on potential trades.

Finalist ‘makes contact’ with Hawk as ‘30-plus’ stars may go; $3.25m free agent’s call: Trade Whispers (Max Laughton, Fox Sports, 23/08)

CONTENDER ‘MAKES CONTACT’ WITH HAWKS VETERAN

Brisbane has shown interest in Hawthorn forward Jack Gunston, making contact in an effort to lure the veteran north, reports SEN’s Sam Edmund.

The 2020 best and fairest winner, who turns 31 in October, is a free agent and has gathered interest from clubs like Collingwood and Melbourne in recent years.

The Lions appear to be the most interested party this year especially given Daniel McStay’s looming exit to Collingwood via free agency.

“I’ve made a call on Jack Gunston today (Tuesday),” Edmund said on SEN.

“He’s someone who needs to make a call on what he wants to do. He’s a free agent of course at Hawthorn.

“Brisbane, it’s a statement of fact, they have made contact. They’re looking to replace Dan McStay … they’ve known he is going for a long time now.

“At this stage, that inquiry from Brisbane just hasn’t progressed beyond that.

“This will become clear in the next week or two. They (the Lions) are definitely interested.”

Make me a Lion: Bulldogs midfielder confirms trade request (Callum Twomey, AFL.com.au, 19/09)

JOSH Dunkley has chosen Brisbane as his new home after turning his back on a long-term offer from the Western Bulldogs.

Dunkley has been wooed by the Lions and Port Adelaide throughout this season whilst also being presented a five-year deal to remain at the Bulldogs, where he is a premiership player after their 2016 flag success.

Essendon had also put forward a five-year offer but had not been in the hunt for Dunkley when his decision time narrowed after his failed trade request to the Bombers in 2020.

But the strong-bodied midfielder has picked the Lions as his new home and wants to be traded to the preliminary finalists. He is out of contract and not a free agent, meaning the Lions would need to secure a trade to get him over the line.

AFL.com.au revealed Brisbane's interest in Dunkley in August, with the Lions keen to boost their midfield brigade. Dunkley's sister plays netball in Queensland and his family regularly holidays in the state.

Attention will now turn to how the Lions look to get a deal done given they hold pick No.15 and have star father-son Will Ashcroft coming to the club.

Ashcroft is the standout player in this year's draft pool and it would be a surprise if the Lions didn't need to match a bid at No.1, while fellow father-son prospect Jaspa Fletcher could also attract a top-20 bid.

The Lions could try to use future selections to land Dunkley or be prepared to go into a significant draft points deficit, which would push back their first pick next year.

The 25-year-old Dunkley played 116 games for the Dogs, including 23 this year, which included 18 goals.

Story update (well, speculation really):

THE WESTERN Bulldogs are expected to target two first-round picks for Josh Dunkley, who has chosen Brisbane as his new home after turning his back on a long-term offer from the Dogs.

AFL trade news: Josh Dunkley requests trade to Brisbane Lions (Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 19/09)

The Herald Sun understands the Lions offered Dunkley a huge six-year deal worth between $700,000-$750,000 and still hope to secure Brisbane free agent Jack Gunston.

The likely acquisition of Dunkley does not impact the club’s capacity to secure Gunston as a free agent if he decides to leave Hawthorn and arguably strengthens the club’s claims given their improved midfield delivery.

Brisbane has cap space set aside for Gunston, who is yet to decide whether to exercise his unrestricted free agency.
Brisbane’s exit interviews start on Tuesday, with Dan McStay certain to take up a free agency offer at Collingwood.

But the Lions believe free agent Darcy Gardiner will stay and have no plans to allow contracted midfielder Deven Robertson to leave.

The Dogs would be prepared to trade Dunkley, but said in a statement “we will take some time to work through the club’s options leading into the trade period”.

“The club was clearly intent on Josh staying with the Bulldogs, having tabled an attractive contract offer for him to continue with us for the long term,” list boss Power said.

Docker deal getting close, Lions hunt picks, big Saint going again (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 26/09)

LIONS HUNT FOR MORE PICKS

BRISBANE is on the hunt for more draft picks as the Lions face a busy trade period luring Josh Dunkley to the Gabba as well as father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions have had discussions with multiple clubs around attaining more draft swaps, including Gold Coast, which looms as a possible pick swap partner given its suite of selections.

The Suns are prepared to put pick No.7 on the trade table for the club that takes on Jack Bowes and his heavily backended contract, but also have a stack of other selections that the Lions could eye in the second and third rounds – No.25, 31, 34, 43, 52 (worth 2528 draft points).

Brisbane currently has picks No.15, 33, 44 and 69 (worth 2086 points) in the first four rounds of the draft, but faces matching a bid on gun youngster Ashcroft at the No.1 pick and potentially Fletcher as well within the first round.

The club can go into a points deficit for next year, but will still need to satisfy the Western Bulldogs on a trade for Dunkley.

The Dogs are pushing for two first-round picks in return for Dunkley, who is out of contract but not a free agent. – Callum Twomey

Hope you don't mind but I saw this on Fox Sports this morning.

Ten biggest moves of trade period... and how one deal may trigger wild domino effect

JOSH DUNKLEY TO BRISBANE

Brisbane
had a big win last week when off-contract Bulldog Josh Dunkley turned down significant offers from the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide to request a trade to the Lions. Landing Dunkley, though, while having an eye towards a key draft looms as a tricky task for the Lions.

The Lions are tied to two of the best draft prospects of this year’s class in father-son duo Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher. Ashcroft, who last week claimed the Larke Medal as the best player of the AFL Under 18 national championships, is almost certain to attract a bid at Pick 1, while Fletcher’s draft range is between Picks 15 and 25, according to recruiters

It means the Lions will need to satisfy the Dogs in a Dunkley trade while also banking selections to match inevitably early rival club bids on Ashcroft and Fletcher.

Brisbane will enter the trade period holding Picks 15, 33, 44 (via Port Adelaide) and 69 in the draft. According to the draft value index, those four picks total 2086 points. But if North Melbourne holds Pick 1 and bids on Ashcroft then, the Lions would need 2400 points to match with the 20 per cent father-son discount. Then there’s Fletcher, who could cost the Lions between 890 and 730 points... when they already don’t have enough points for Ashcroft.

The Lions though have time and a few routes to explore.

They’ll be compensated for losing free agent Dan McStay. Where that pick will land remains uncertain – due to the AFL’s secret herbs and spices formula – but an end-of-first-round compo pick would give them just over 900 points, while an end-of-second-round selection would net them around 500 points. There’s also a chance restricted free agent Darcy Gardiner departs. A compensation selection would likely be in the second or third round.

That would give them enough points to match Ashcroft and, potentially, Fletcher bids. Alternatively they could go into draft deficit that would see their first pick at next year’s draft be pushed back.

As for Dunkley, Dogs list boss Sam Power last week made it clear how much the club rates him and wanted to retain him. Power said Dunkley was “at the peak of his powers in a football sense” after his “career-best season in 2022”, hence the club “tabled an attractive contract offer for him to continue with us for the long term”.

To secure Dunkley, Brisbane‘s future first-rounder mightn’t be enough, with the Dogs expected to target two first-round picks for him, according to AFL Media. Although Brisbane will hold some power at the trade table and could argue their suggested trade – a future first and second-rounder, for instance – is fair given Dunkley isn’t contracted and the Dogs will desperately want to be compensated for losing a player that topped their Brownlow Medal count.

The Lions could use future selections to land Dunkley. Alternatively, they could split their top 2022 selection (Pick 15) in a separate trade with a club that not only wants to get into the early part of next year’s draft, but also has second and third-round picks to offer back to Brisbane. It means the Lions would bank more points to pay for Ashcroft and Fletcher.

The Lions could also split Pick 33 in a trade and bank several later picks that way to help them acquire more points. Alternatively, any Brisbane players that want out for a better opportunity at a rival club might be encouraged to leave.

Jack Gunston is close to a decision between Hawthorn and Brisbane

Hawthorn great Jack Gunston says he is still weighing up a move to Brisbane Lions to replace outgoing goal kicker Dan McStay.

Gunston, 31, is an unrestricted free agent meaning he can walk to the Lions without the club giving up anything in a trade.

The three-time premiership forward said he was still considering his options at a TAB spring carnival launch function on Tuesday despite coach Chris Fagan’s decision to step away from the coaching role for the time being.

Fagan will take part in the AFL’s investigation into the treatment of Hawthorn indigenous players which is expected to take months to complete.

Fagan will vigorously defend himself in the face of claims Hawthorn players were mistreated during his time at Hawthorn as coach development manager and football operations boss.

Gunston is in-line to replace McStay who will head to Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent.

The gun forward said he was close to making a call whether to head north.

Gunston was at Hawthorn during Fagan’s time there.

“I’m pretty close to coming to a decision,” Gunston said.

AFL Trade news: Josh Dunkley explains why he wants trade to Brisbane, Jack Gunston weighs up future (Jon Ralph, Jay Clark and Simeon Thomas-Wilson, Herald-Sun, 27/09)

Brisbane-bound midfielder Josh Dunkley says he is confident Chris Fagan will be his coach at the Lions next year as he denied a culture issue was at play in his second trade request in two years.

Dunkley will move to Brisbane if the Lions can broker a trade with the Western Bulldogs, but says after 18 goals in his outstanding 2022 season he is prepared to play mid-forward in an onball unit that includes Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage.

The Herald Sun revealed last week Dunkley would sign a six-year deal worth $750,000 per year, and Dunkley said he had genuinely been unsure about his decision until last Monday when he officially asked for a trade.

He told the Herald Sun at the TAB Spring Racing launch that while Fagan could not go into details about the accusations from First Nations players about conduct in his time at Hawthorn, Dunkley believes will would coach the Lions next year.

“It was a tough decision and something I had to think about a lot,” he said of his trade request.

“Weighing up my life here (in Melbourne) and in Adelaide with my partner Tippah and my life in Brisbane as well. So at the end of the day I feel like it’s a good lifestyle decision and they have an exciting list up there.

“Fages was really good. He is really disappointed and everyone knows that. It’s been on the public record that he has been struggling with it, but he’s a great person and we didn’t talk too much about it. He just wanted to reassure me that he feels like he hasn’t done too much wrong and with the situation that is going on, it’s hard to talk about.

“It definitely didn’t make me second guess. Everyone has backed him in and all the news reports have backed him in, and from what I have had to do with him in such little time he’s such a good human being and he’s really cared for me, and I am looking forward to that relationship and getting up and meeting him.”

Treloar’s great mate Adam Treloar’s partner Kim Ravaillion is in Brisbane playing Super Netball, and he is likely to join her once his AFL career is finished.

It means that while it will be difficult for Dunkley to leave his best friend, they will be reunited in Queensland in coming years, with the 25-year-old adamant the decision was based around lifestyle.

His partner Tippah plays Super Netball with Adelaide and while all contracts in the league are up at the end of next year, she loves the exciting young side she is playing with.

But in the long-term they will settle in Queensland, with 2016 premiership player Dunkley describing it as an offer too good to refuse.

Dunkley asked for a trade to Essendon at the end of 2020 amid the turbulent finish to the club’s hub experience in Queensland, but is adamant the Dogs culture is sound.

It is no secret the ultra-professional Dunkley led the charge on that front at the Dogs, but he said his relationship with coach Luke Beveridge was good.

“I think that was never an issue. It was more for me the on-field stuff and my role and the lifestyle. I feel like I can improve my footy again in the team up there. The culture stuff never came into my decision making.

“The culture is really good at the (Bulldogs) footy club. The boys are really close

“This year has been the best year out of all of them. It was a good step in the right direction after the grand final, so there is no bad blood.

“Bevo was really good to speak to on the phone. We have had a great relationship from day one and before I was drafted he spoke to me about how much I can be a role model and leader, so Bevo has been great for me and he’s like a father figure.

“I said to Bevo it was more of a lifestyle choice. He backed it in and said he completely understands the long-term deal was appealing.”

AFL contracts: Every player without a deal beyond 2022 (Marc McGowan, Herald-Sun, 27/09)

Brisbane Lions (7)

Tom Berry, Blake Coleman, Tom Fullarton, Darcy Gardiner (restricted free agent), Ryan Lester (unrestricted free agent), Connor McFadyen, Carter Michael

Daniel McStay confirmed season-long speculation last week about his Lions exit and is tipped to sign a five-year deal with Collingwood once free agency opens. Dayne Zorko will continue for a 12th season, which could include the 33-year-old captaining the club again. Brisbane also hopes to lock away restricted free agent defender Gardiner soon despite interest from opposition clubs. Jaxon Prior re-signed for two years, while Coleman, Fullarton, McFadyen and Michael are all likely to be retained.

Lions look into Sun, Cat set to depart, Gold Coast go Berry-picking (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelic, AFL.com.au, 27/09)

LIONS JOIN BOWES CHASE

BRISBANE is among the clubs interested in Gold Coast's Jack Bowes and the Suns' pick No.7 as the Lions plot a busy trade period.

Bowes is due to return from overseas this week and will meet with clubs as he decides on his future.

AFL.com.au revealed last week the Suns were prepared to put up their prized pick No.7 for the club that also takes on Bowes and his heavily backended deal.

Geelong has long been interested in Bowes and could also use the top draft selection to target local prospect Jhye Clark, while Hawthorn and Essendon are also interested. The Saints, too, have been interested, with the Lions expected to meet with Bowes later this week as he comes to a decision.

The decision will be in Bowes’ hands as to where he is keen to play. He is contracted until the end of 2024, but the Suns are looking at ways to move out his salary as part of a plan to realign their cap. Bowes has played in the midfield and across half-back and had an injury-hit season this year after pre-season shoulder surgery.

The top draft choice would also open up plans for the Lions in their trade period, given they will need to satisfy the Western Bulldogs on a trade for Josh Dunkley whilst also having enough draft picks to match bids on father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Dogs are eyeing two first-round picks for Dunkley, who is a favourite to win their best and fairest this week. – Callum Twomey

SUNS EYE BRISBANE FORWARD

GOLD Coast is interested in Brisbane's out-of-contract small forward Tom Berry.

Berry, the younger brother of Lions star Jarrod, is out of contract and has struggled to break into the Lions' team consistently this season, playing only three games in 2022.

The Lions have offered Berry a contract but he remains unsigned and has gathered interest from the Suns.

The Suns will lose gun small forward Izak Rankine to Adelaide but have also been in the market for a pressure player, with Berry's speed and tenacity a key part of his game.

Berry has played 20 games for the Lions since being drafted by the club at the end of 2019.

Clubs have been looking at the Lions' depth players this season, with Deven Robertson having interest through the year but breaking back into the senior team for its finals series. – Callum Twomey

Gun for hire? Hawk Gunston mulls move to Lions (Jon Pierik and Peter Ryan, The Age, 27/09)

Speaking at the TAB spring carnival launch on Tuesday, Gunston said he hoped to make a call “in the coming days or early next week”.

“It’s just that change of lifestyle that does appeal. We’ll see what we end up on. Obviously, Hodgey and Birch have done it before. I have had a lot chats with those guys,” Gunston said.
Gunston is an unrestricted free agent and would not cost the Lions a draft pick.
He said Fagan’s uncertain future was not an issue.

“Hopefully, he still is the coach of the Brisbane Lions but the sole purpose of me if I choose to go there isn’t resting on Fages being the coach or not,” Gunston said.

AFL Trade Radio: Brisbane List Manager Dom Ambrogio has confirmed that midfielder Cam Rayner will not be going anywhere this trade period.

Probably a good reminder that there's no point listening to Trade Radio ever. 95% of it is idiots speculating and if there's any actual news, it'll get published in a reputable (well, maybe that's stretching it) outlet at some point and someone will post it in this thread.

Gun forward's Hawks career over as Lions move beckons (Michael Rogers, AFL.com.au, 28/09)

JACK Gunston has played his last game at Hawthorn after telling the club he intends to join Brisbane as a free agent.

The triple-premiership player played 211 games and kicked 410 goals for the Hawks after joining the club from Adelaide ahead of the 2012 season, after just two years with the Crows.

Gunston won the Peter Crimmins Medal for Hawthorn's best and fairest in 2020, but has struggled with injury in the past two seasons, playing just 17 games.

He was an All-Australian in 2018, when he booted 51 goals, and led the Hawks' goalkicking in 2015, '16 and '20.

The 30-year-old will join a powerful Brisbane forward line that already boasts key forwards Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood, and prolific smalls Charlie Cameron, Lincoln McCarthy and Zac Bailey.

The Lions are likely to use Gunston as a direct replacement for departing key forward Dan McStay, who is set to join Collingwood as soon as Friday when the free agency period officially opens.

Hawks football manager Rob McCartney said the club farewelled Gunston with its best wishes.

"We were always in open discussion with Jack and his management about his current position here at the club and what his future might look like," McCartney said.

"Jack has been an incredible servant during his 11 seasons here at Hawthorn. He leaves the club as a three-time premiership player and a best and fairest winner, but more importantly, a person who is genuinely respected and loved by his teammates, staff and our Hawthorn fans.

"The Gunston family will always be part of the Hawthorn fabric and we thank them for contribution they have made to the brown and gold."

Rivals circling uncontracted Brisbane small forward (Lachlan Geleit, SEN, 29/09)

Gold Coast are keen on luring Brisbane small forward Tom Berry down the Pacific Motorway, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

Berry, 22, has played 20 games for the Lions since making his debut in 2020 but has struggled to nail down a senior spot with Brisbane possessing one of the competition’s deepest forward lines.

After breaking through for just three AFL games in 2022, Twomey says the Suns are “definitely” interested in Berry’s services.

“He’s a different player to (older brother) Jarrod if you haven’t seen him play too much,” Twomey said on AFL Trade Radio.

“He’s played 20 games in three years at the club, he’s 22, but only played three games this year.

“He’s a small forward, really quick, a tackling player and one of the best characters I’ve met coming through the draft, a much-loved player of the Brisbane line-up.

“He just hasn’t been able to break into that forward group, they’ve got some pretty good small forwards, don’t they? Charlie Cameron, Lincoln McCarthy and Zac Bailey, so he’s only been in there for bits and pieces.

“But the Suns definitely have an interest in him.”

With the Suns set to lose Izak Rankine to Adelaide, Twomey understands why they’re targeting a small forward that can offer “ferocious” pressure.

“They’ll lose Izak Rankine, who is a very different player to what Tom Berry is,” Twomey said.

“But, in terms of the ferocious, sort of tackling pressure, that’s sort of the reason to have a look at him.

“He’s uncontracted … he’s received an offer from Brisbane to stay of course where his brother is one of their key players.

“But Tom is on the radar of the Suns.”

Berry kicked eight goals and averaged 25.1 disposals in the VFL from 10 games at the level in 2022.

Doesn't add too much to the previous story.
