Josh Dunkley showdown looms as Bulldogs play hard ball (Peter Ryan and Michael Gleeson, The Age, 06/10)

The Western Bulldogs are prepared to send their best and fairest winner Josh Dunkley into the pre-season draft if the Brisbane Lions don’t offer a suitable deal for the 25-year-old midfielder.

The club’s list management committee has agreed to the shock move that could leave them empty-handed after the Lions traded out pick 15 in a pick swap with the Giants on Wednesday, scuppering the chances of them landing Dunkley in exchange for selection 15 and a future first round pick.

The Lions did that deal after the Bulldogs refused to send later picks to the Lions along with Dunkley in exchange for two first round draft picks.

A Bulldogs’ source said the club would be prepared to cop the inevitable fallout and pick Dunkley up in the pre-season draft if he was still available at that stage rationalising the move on the basis it would deny a likely finals’ competitor a gun midfielder.

The Bulldogs are not prepared to accept merely a future first round selection for the premiership player and will turn their attention to attempting to poach a Lions player along with a future first round pick if the Lions cannot find a way to satisfy their demands.

A source close to the negotiations said the Lions were preparing to offer pick 21 and a future first rounder for Dunkley, however a Brisbane spokesperson told The Age the club was “insistent on not playing the negotiations out in public”.

The Bulldogs are not interested in Rhys Mathieson who is exploring his options but could enquire about emerging players on the Lions’ list.

The hardline stance from the Bulldogs is likely to accelerate the Lions’ thinking as they prioritise getting a deal done for Jack Gunston before turning their attention to Dunkley with six days still remaining before the trade deadline.

The Lions were courting Dunkley from midway through the season with the midfielder nominating the Lions soon after they bowed out of the premiership race in the preliminary final. The Lions offered a long-term deal for Dunkley to support brilliant midfielder Lachie Neale with the Bulldogs, who also offered him a long-term deal, disappointed to lose him.

AFL Trade 2022: Keep up to date with the latest trade news on day four of the exchange period (Jay Clark, Herald Sun, 07/10)

The Western Bulldogs are prepared to roll the dice on Josh Dunkley in the pre-season draft if Brisbane doesn’t meet their trade demands for the star midfielder.

The Dogs want two first-round picks in exchange for Dunkley, but the Lions will only hand over their top two choices (pick 21 and a future first-round pick) if they receive picks 30 and 39 back from the Bulldogs.

The Dogs have knocked that proposal back and have discussed the prospect of letting Dunkley go through to the pre-season draft.

It would be a bold move from the Dogs as Dunkley is out of contract and would be free to be picked up by any team in the pre-season draft if the two clubs failed to reach an agreement by the trade deadline on Wednesday.

The Dogs have also said they would be prepared to discuss some Lions players as part of the deal, but Brisbane only wants to include Rhys Mathieson at this stage.

The Bulldogs are adamant Dunkley is worth two first-round picks, similar to the deal which sent ex-GWS Giants’ midfielder Tim Taranto to Richmond for picks 12 and 19.

The impasse leaves talks on the toughest deal of this year’s trade period at a standstill, with the Bulldogs prepared to take the biggest risk of the post-season by letting Dunkley go in the draft for nothing.

The Bulldogs have an earlier pick (No.11) than Brisbane (13) in the pre-season draft, meaning the Dogs could re-draft Dunkley for next season on a one-year contract.

It is understood the Dogs are willing to welcome him back this way.

Dunkley, 25, has been lauded as one of the most professional and popular members of the playing group and had his best season in 2022 despite a pending trade request.

But Essendon (pick 4) looms as the major threat in the pre-season draft order, as Dunkley also tried to make a move to the Bombers two years ago.

Essendon has significant salary cap room to accommodate Dunkley, 25.

It is the Bulldogs’ preference to grant Dunkley’s wish to be traded to the Gabba after another fine season taking out the club champion award.

But the Dogs are adamant they do not want to give back two second-round picks in the Dunkley deal in line with Brisbane’s demands.

The Dogs initially said they would trade Dunkley for Brisbane’s pick 15 and future first-round selection, but the Lions on Wednesday traded pick 15 to GWS Giants for pick 21 and a future second-round selection.

The Lions have selections 21, 25, 34, 35, 36 and 56 in this year’s draft and are trying to bank enough draft picks and value index points to snare father-son gems Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

Jet midfielder Ashcroft will be the No.1 pick in the draft.

The standoff is common for the mid-part of the trade period although Carlton benefited when Gold Coast let Jack Martin through to the pre-season draft three years ago after the Suns knocked back a second-round selection for him.

Lions list boss Dom Ambrogio and Dogs’ list boss Sam Power are renowned as two of the toughest trade negotiators in the game, setting the scene for an intriguing final few days of the trade period next week.

The Dogs secured Adam Treloar from Collingwood for pick 14 and a future second-rounder in the 2020 trade period in a bargain-basement deal for the $900,000-a-year ballwinner.

The Dogs also netted picks 26, 33 and 42 in the deal.

Michael Whiting: Just an update on this. Bit of confusion over which future 2nd Bris sent to GC as part of the Tom Berry deal. It was in fact the GWS future 2nd (confirmed by Lions). They still have their own future 2nd available to trade.

ANOTHER YEAR FOR LIONS' LESTER

RYAN Lester is set to go around for a 13th season in Brisbane.

The 30-year-old is yet to put pen to paper on a contract extension, but he is understood to have been offered a new deal for 2023.

Despite being squeezed out of Chris Fagan's plans in 2022, Lester has been included in the leadership group for the past five years and long been a favourite inside the Brisbane headquarters.

Lester only managed three senior appearances this year, but he was in the squad for large chunks of the year, including all three finals and round 23.

The Victorian shared Brisbane's reserves best and fairest award with Jimmy Tunstill after playing 18 games in the VFL this season.

Lester played 17 games in 2021 and has played 161 in total since being selected with pick No. 28 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft. – Josh Gabelich

Rule provision could unlock moves, swap sets up deals, gun Hawk waits (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 07/10)

HENRY, DUNKLEY IN SIGHTS AFTER PICK SWAP

GEELONG could offer pick No.25 to Collingwood for young forward Ollie Henry, after completing a lopsided trade with Brisbane on Friday that saw it ship out five additional picks to secure the second-round selection.

And the pick swap will also give the Lions a stronger draft hand to make a renewed trade offer for Western Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley.
The Lions put forward a deal for Dunkley involving picks 15 and a future-first-round pick but were wanting the midfielder and three of the Bulldogs' picks back in return as well, which was shut down, before trading back from No.15 for more draft capital.

Brisbane now has picks 21, 34, 35, 36, 38, 48, 55 and 56 in the first three rounds of this year's draft to match bids on father-sons Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher, as well as a future first-round pick and two future second-round selections that could help shape an offer for Dunkley. – Riley Beveridge, Callum Twomey
FREE AGENCY WINDOW SLAMS SHUT

A DEAL taking Hawthorn's veteran forward Jack Gunston to Brisbane will have to be conducted via a trade, after the AFL's free agency window closed at 5pm AEDT on Friday afternoon.

Clubs had to lodge the paperwork for any deals they wished to complete via free agency by the end of this week, leaving Gunston and his move to the Lions as the most high-profile deal still left standing.

It had always been likely that a deal for Gunston would be completed via a trade, given Brisbane's reluctance to dilute the free agency compensation – currently pick No.35 – that it received after Collingwood secured a move for Dan McStay.

Tom Browne: Revealed / exclusive

A six club mega super deal is poised to break open trade period.

There are advanced discussions for gws to get pick 1, north 2 and 3, port Ratugolea / Junior Rioli / Horne-Francis, West Coast picks 8 and 12.

Brisbane Geelong involved in deal.
I wouldn't normally post Tom Browne but this will probably turn out to be so terribly off base that it will be funny.

Premiership star skips out on free agency for move north (Glenn Valencich, 7News, 07/10)

Brisbane have agreed to secure Jack Gunston in a trade with Hawthorn, rather than signing him as a free agent, reports 7NEWS Melbourne’s Tom Browne.

The Lions’ compensation (second-round pick, currently No.35) for Dan McStay’s departure to Collingwood would have been diluted had Gunston simply signed a contract.

The Queensland club will instead send a third-round pick to the Hawks to get Gunston.

The deal should be finalised and submitted on Friday night or Saturday.

Trade Period state of play: Where the major deals stand ahead of huge week (Callum Twomey and Riley Beveridge, AFL.com.au, 08/10)

Josh Dunkley
This one appears set to go down to the wire. The Bulldogs are chasing two first-round picks for their best and fairest winner and quickly knocked back the Lions' offer of pick No.15 and a future first-round selection in exchange for Dunkley, picks 30, 39 and a future third-round selection. The Lions then went and moved back down the order through a pick swap, but also loaded up on selections on Friday that gives them a stronger hand to play with. The deadlock remains, with the Bulldogs open to letting Dunkley go to the pre-season draft if a deal isn't reached.

Jack Gunston
The three-time premiership Hawk will now head to Brisbane through a trade instead of free agency as the Lions didn't want to dilute their free agency compensation pick they received for losing Dan McStay to Collingwood. A Gunston deal is expected to be sorted through the swap of a third-round selection from Brisbane to Hawthorn but has been tied up in other deals.

Dogs star's manager expects Lions trade talks to 'go the distance' (Dejan Kalinic, AFL.com.au, 07/10)

JOSH Dunkley's manager is confident the Western Bulldogs midfielder will get to Brisbane, but he feels negotiations will "go the distance".

The Dogs are seeking two first-round picks for Dunkley after the 2022 Charles Sutton medallist requested a trade to the Lions.

The earliest pick Brisbane currently holds in this year's NAB AFL Draft is No.21, making the pre-season draft a growing possibility for Dunkley.

But Dunkley's manager, Liam Pickering, believes a deal will get done for the 25-year-old.

"I hope so, I'm confident," he told SEN on Saturday.

"He doesn't want to be at the Bulldogs, he wants to be in Brisbane so hopefully the two teams can work out something that they're all happy with."

Pickering added: "This will go the distance I think."

Dunkley, pick No.25 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, has played 116 games for the Bulldogs.

Pickering said suggestions the Bulldogs could let the 2016 premiership player walk to the pre-season draft were ridiculous.

"That would be ludicrous. What? Get nothing for him? That's just cutting off your nose to spite your face. You end up with nothing for him," he said.

"They've got a good relationship, Josh and the coach (Luke Beveridge), so I hope it wouldn't end up in that situation because I think that would be a poor reflection when they have got a good relationship.

"At this time everyone is posturing so I get it and I'm not going to say too much more."

Revealed: The full details of the mega trade that hit the brakes (Callum Twomey, AFL.com.au, 09/10)

IT WAS set to be the AFL's biggest ever trade, but was stopped in its tracks.

The mega deal that involved six clubs that was in the works to deliver Jason Horne-Francis and Junior Rioli to Port Adelaide, have Greater Western Sydney take the No.1 pick, see West Coast boost its draft hand, give North Melbourne three first-round selections and, by extension, see Jack Gunston join Brisbane hit a snag through an AFL ruling on Saturday.

The Power had applied to be permitted to trade both its future first and second-round selections to make the deal happen.
Port would have secured main targets Horne-Francis and Rioli as well as pick No.36, which would have come from Brisbane, who had an involvement in the proposed deal to execute their trade for Gunston.

The Lions would have sent second-round pick No.36 into the whirlpool of selections and spun out of the deal with No.40 and 43. Although the Gunston trade was not directly a part of the agreed mix, it would have then seen the Lions likely send pick No.40 to the Hawks for Gunston, who will join Brisbane as a trade instead of free agency as the club didn't want to dilute its free agency compensation pick for losing Dan McStay.
PROPOSED MEGA DEAL DETAILS

NORTH MELBOURNE
Trade out: Jason Horne-Francis, pick No.1, 2023 third-round pick (tied to Fremantle)
Trade in: Picks No.2, 3, 33, 53, 2023 future first-round pick (tied to Port Adelaide)

PORT ADELAIDE
Trade out: Picks No.8, 33, 43, 53, 2023 first-round pick, 2023 second-round pick
Trade in: Jason Horne-Francis, Junior Rioli, pick No.36

WEST COAST
Trade out: Junior Rioli, picks No.2, 40
Trade in: Picks No.8, 12, 2023 second-round pick (tied to Port Adelaide), 2023 third-round pick (tied to Fremantle)

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
Trade out: Picks No.3, 12
Trade in: Pick No.1

BRISBANE
Trade out: Pick No.36
Trade in: Jack Gunston, pick No.43

HAWTHORN
Trade in: Pick No.40
Trade out: Jack Gunston

Deals set up big finish, Pie's hopes in limbo, Dons' plan for duo (Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge, Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 10/10)

An upgraded offer from the Dogs is expected to be reliant on Josh Dunkley's move to Brisbane, with no progress between the Dogs and Lions on a proposed deal. The Lions have packaged together picks, including their future first-round pick, but also have wanted a pick in exchange as well as Dunkley as they prepare to match early bids on father-son duo Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions hold pick No.21 and have had clubs look at the selection, with Hawthorn offering pick 24 and Jack Gunston to move up the draft board, but Brisbane was not keen to do that deal.

AFL Trade Period: Follow all the latest news on the big deals as it happens (Jon Ralph, Herald Sun, 11/10)

The Lions will on Tuesday hope to step up their chase for Western Bulldogs best-and-fairest winner Josh Dunkley but have been unable to secure a higher pick than their current No.21.

Despite their efforts rival clubs with picks inside the 20s are unwilling to trade them so far.

It means the Western Bulldogs will have to accept pick 21 and the Lions future first-rounder for Dunkley if they hope to move on Fremantle’s Rory Lobb before Wednesday’s trade deadline.

The Dockers are now expected to release Lobb but would drive a hard bargain on him, potentially even asking for a late first-rounder from Luke Beveridge’s side.

It means the Dogs might need to trade Dunkley to secure enough picks to service the Lobb deal, even if they eventually offer a mid-20s pick or future second-rounder for the Fremantle tall.

Run and Gun: Lions land Hawks sharpshooter (Josh Gabelich, AFL.com.au, 11/10)

BRISBANE has secured the services of three-time premiership star Jack Gunston after striking a deal with Hawthorn, sending pick No.48 and a future fourth-round pick to the Hawks.

The 30-year-old lands at a third club after playing 211 games for the Hawks, following 14 matches across two seasons with Adelaide.

The Lions will use him as part of a three-pronged forward line alongside Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood.

The Lions decided to trade for Gunston rather than acquire the Victorian via free agency, to avoid cancelling the free agency compensation they received for Dan McStay.

Hawthorn and Brisbane were close to finalising this deal on Friday but couldn't agree to terms when they reconvened on Monday, before finally completing the trade on Tuesday morning.

Trades LIVE: Hawk moves to Lions; Freo set high asking price for Lobb (Ben Cotton, Max Laughton and Catherine Healey, Fox Sports, 11/10)

10:45AM — LOBB TALKS KICK OFF

Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs have reportedly engaged in their first meaningful talks for Rory Lobb.

While no such deal is in place, it’s a promising step given the Dockers initially said they had no plans to trade the contracted big man.

Multiple reports state the Dockers are targeting the Dogs’ Pick 11, however the Dogs have only offered up Pick 30 so far.

A deal could therefore be contingent on a Josh Dunkley trade, which could see the Dogs end up with Pick 21 to potentially offer up for Lobb.

Dogs' draft stand remains, Hawks star weighs future, talks for Freo talls continue (Callum Twomey, Josh Gabelich, Riley Beveridge, AFL.com.au, 11/10)

DUNKLEY DEADLOCK DRAGS ON

THE Western Bulldogs are adamant on sending Josh Dunkley to the pre-season draft if their trade price set for the midfielder isn't met by Brisbane during Wednesday's trade deadline day.

Negotiations haven't progressed between the Lions and Bulldogs on the 25-year-old best-and-fairest winner, with the pre-season draft a growing chance as the close of the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period edges closer.

The Dogs have pushed for two first-round picks for Dunkley and also discussed players being involved in a potential deal, however Brisbane is not prepared to use players in a swap.

The Lions had looked to trade their pick No.21 and future first-round pick for Dunkley and receive a pick back in return however that won't proceed, leaving the 2016 premiership player in limbo on the final day. The Bulldogs board has approved sending Dunkley to the pre-season draft if a satisfactory deal is not decided.

The deal could be linked to how the Dogs fare in their chase of Fremantle tall Rory Lobb, who is contracted for next year. The Dockers are keen for a first-round pick if they are to release Lobb, while the Dogs have presented a second-round pick and other pick swaps.
VETERAN LION ON RIVALS' RADAR

FORMER Brisbane and Carlton midfielder Mitch Robinson remains on the radar of two clubs as a delisted free agent once the Trade Period ends on Wednesday night.

The 33-year-old announced his retirement at the end of the season after not being offered another deal by the Lions, following 147 appearances across eight years at the Gabba after playing 100 times for Carlton.

Since then, two clubs have kept in touch with Robinson about extending his career in 2023.

At this stage, it will depend on how many list spots are available at these clubs ahead of the draft and what they can offer Robinson.

It is understood that neither club has progressed talks to a point where a deal has been tabled, but those conversations are expected to progress once the dust settles following the Trade Period.

Robinson will move away from Brisbane for the next phase of his life and is prepared to move anywhere if the move makes sense for him and his family.

The Tasmanian will explore a career in player management and media if he doesn't land another gig at an AFL club. – Josh Gabelich

AFL Trade Period 2022: Follow the latest updates from deadline day (Jay Clark, Herald Sun, 11/10)

The two players loom as the two toughest deals ahead of Wednesday night’s trade deadline but Brisbane made significant ground telling the Bulldogs it would trade its pick 21 and future first-round selection for Dunkley and pick 39.

The peace deal is expected to help finalise Dunkley’s move north as the Bulldogs may need 21 to secure Rory Lobb’s move from Fremantle.
The impasse comes as Brisbane told Western Bulldogs it would be prepared to find middle ground to avoid the Dogs losing Dunkley for nothing in the pre-season draft.

News Corp can reveal Brisbane said it would be happy to give the Bulldogs picks 21 and a future first-round selection for Dunkley in exchange for only one second-round pick (39) back from the Dogs.

Brisbane initially said it wanted two second-round selections (30 and 39) back from the Dogs for 15 (before it was traded) and a future first-round choice.

But the Lions have attempted to find middle-ground in a deal for Dunkley who is set to earn about $650,000 a year on his modest new contract at the Lions.

Brisbane believe the offer of 21 and a future first-round pick for the out-of-contract Dunkley is fair considering it gave up pick six and 19 for Brownlow Medalist Lachie Neale.

The Lions have also received pick swap offers for its pick 21 which could see Brisbane shuffle back in the draft order if the Bulldogs do not accept 21.’

Essendon does not want to get involved in the Dunkley deal and any pre-season move despite having interest in the clearance winner two years ago.

The Bombers are expected to baulk at the prospect of snaring Dunkley as it does not want the distraction and mess of having a player on their list against his wishes for only one season under new coach Brad Scott.

Big Wednesday: Decision between three states looms for O’Meara (Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan, The Age, 11/10)

The Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions have not advanced talks on a trade for Josh Dunkley with the Lions offering pick 21 and their future first-round pick, but want pick 39 this year back so they can recover some points needed for father-son selections Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Bulldogs won’t hand over 39 and want the Lions to add later picks to the pick 21 and future first-rounder that is on the table.

7AM — CRUCIAL PICK COULD UNLOCK SEVERAL DEALS

A humble early second-round draft selection, currently held by Brisbane, could be the key to unlocking at least three deals on the final day of the trade period.

The Lions on Wednesday morning still hold Pick 21. That’s the Giants’ natural second-round selection as the two teams one week ago executed a pick swap that saw Brisbane hand over its natural first-rounder (Pick 15) to the Giants, who gave the Lions Pick 21 and their future second-round pick.

Brisbane is now hopeful Pick 21 can help it unlock a trade for Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley, who remains in limbo.

After weeks of haggling, Brisbane has told the Bulldogs it would be prepared trade Pick 21 and a future first-round selection for Dunkley and Pick 39. That’s a step back from the Lions’ initial demand of Dunkley, 30 and 39 in exchange for 15 (before it was traded) and a future first.

But, as it stands, the Bulldogs won’t hand over Pick 39 and are keen for the Lions to add later draft selections to Pick 21 and the future first already on the table.

The Bulldogs board has reportedly approved the club to send Dunkley, a premiership player and the Dogs’ 2022 best and fairest winner, to the pre-season draft should no satisfactory deal be presented.

However Fremantle has the Bulldogs trying to trade for Rory Lobb, with Pick 21 potentially the selection that could unlock the Lobb deal.

The Dockers want a first-round pick for losing Lobb, while the Bulldogs have produced offers involving a second-round pick and some swaps, such as Pick 30 and a future second in exchange for Lobb and a late pick.

The Bulldogs, ultimately, may find Pick 21 would convince Fremantle to give up Lobb, should they receive it from the Lions, and unlock the trade

And should the Dockers acquire Pick 21, that selection could play a part in a trade with Hawthorn for Jaeger O’Meara, who’s reportedly set to leave Hawthorn and chose between joining either the Giants or Dockers.

If O’Meara decides he would rather return to Western Australia and join the Dockers, Pick 21 could be crucial to getting the deal done as Fremantle’s earliest pick in the 2022 draft is now Pick 44, plus they traded their future first-round pick to Melbourne in the Luke Jackson trade. However the compensation could be determined by which clubs are willing to take on the majority of the wage on O’Meara’s contract, which still has one year to run.

Ultimately, the pick for now is still with the Lions. And they’ve reportedly received offers to swap Pick 21 – almost certainly to get more draft points to help them match bids on Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher – and would follow that option if the Dunkley trade isn’t executed.
