Unfortunately, whilst he has been a favourite of mine, I am quickly realising Membrey is one of our more 1-dimensional forwards.

He is decent when the ball hits the deck, but it's not a stand-out part of his game. He is not big enough for the ruck. He is also very slow with decision making whenever taking a mark up the ground, such that it can absolutely kill the momentum of any team, let alone one that relies on quick ball movement.

Membrey is really only effective within the forward 50 as a marking target and, even at that, requires the ball to be kicked on his head because he is unable to take a regular leading mark, unless it hits him straight on the chest. So not only is he rather 1-dimensional in where he needs to play, but also how he plays there.

I see losing Membrey and replacing him with Hayes/Sharman as the best balance of value acquisition (via trade) vs "drop off" in quality of replacement player

Membrey is not going anywhere unless he wants to leave. And that’s a win for us as well, him leaving would do more bad then good.

But yes, if we were going to commit to a rebuild I agree on the theory. IDK what it would take for the club to actually commit to a rebuilt though when we are apparently in our “premiership window”, so let’s see

I don't disagree with you.
It was my response to the comment that "we should rebuild " "we should trade Ross and Hill" which is naaah, that's not going to work.

Nick Larkey and Mitch Lewis playing well - both selected well after Josh battle.

Another example of stuff up by our recruiters - discuss!!!

Early days, but the rankings I've seen out so far have mids filling most of the top 7 or 8

No doubt we finish just outside the 8 again and miss the cream of the crop though...

Wardlaw, Ryan, D'Aloia, Long and Hewwett all look ideal for us. Ashcroft will go to the Lions and Crows have a good next gen kid they'll have to stump up early on.

Wardlaw sounds like just what we need, a bustling inside mid with class and clean distribution. Tsatas is a wing mid that sounds promising and Magor is a dominant forward/ mid.

If we still had a hard on for another tall key forward Harry Lemmey sounds like a 199cm tall Rooey with a rockstar name.

I don't get this, prying a new top draft pick from a club will always require overs, I'd prefer to take two firsts to the draft than trade them for fin cal
Problem we have is we've got so many clubs to compete with for his signature.

It's not like Port and the Crows or freo and wce. Where one usually bows out of the race due to their circumstances that year.

In Victoria you almost always have 4 other clubs competing for the same player.

But therein lies the problem.

They had picks 3, 1, 7 & 8, and 4 in a 6 year period.

That's your rebuild right there. But alas, whilst Petracca, Bont, Cripps etc. waltz around dominating the comp for other teams, the Saints really only have Max King to show for it.

That sort of sh*t sets you back a decade.

This is so brutal but so true. We've had so many cracks at the draft and bar king we've just completely ****ed it.

High picks aren't definite stars, they are weighted lottery tickets. Top 5 picks you probably have a 50/50 chance at an A grader to star. Top ten you probably drop to a 1 in 3 chance, top 20 1 in 5 or something etc. We haven't had much access and then the recruiters are probably making it a lower strike rate just through using an assistant coach with no experience in recruiting as our main strategist. We also had our clean skins policy to further hamstring us and that's how you get where our list is at.

He is a forward first and foremost. He is a not a ruckman and not a backman. Has been a top goalkicker for a few years now and a good mark. Not a quick ball mover but he does his job. Why would you move him on? Hayes and sharman are additions not replacements and the latter wasnt picked despite injuries last week, so where is he in the pecking order? The small forwards are not doing it and we only need 2 IMO Higgins and Either Butler/Gresham. Gresham is the difference to a good score for the team, hard man to stop.

Hayes King Higgins
Gresham Membrey Sharman

Thats your forward line- just need good delivery and enough inside 50's
