Jordan DeGoey:

AFL player rating: 14.2. This is ranked 17th in the league and also puts him just behind Shai Bolton as the second best player in the mid-fwd category (Jade Gresham is ranked 8th with a 11.0 rating which puts him 102nd in the league).

He has kicked 48 goals in a season playing just as a forward and also had over 20 touches and a goal a game playing in the mid-fwd role.

If he doesn't cost anything draft pick wise, I can't really see any on-field downside. He is the exact type of player we are looking for. I think he is worth it.

Just on this tangent, I don't think you can downplay what 2009/2010 did to the fan base.

I was born in 1980. For the first decade of my life we were poor and I didn't follow it too much.

Then we came good for a few years and fell back down. (91-92)

But we came good almost straight away. Then fell back again (97-98).

But we came good almost straight away. Then fell back again (04-06).

But we came good almost straight away. Then fell back again (08-11).

After that... we never came back. Most Saints supporters who were at the 2010 GF or were watching closely probably felt the same way when Goddard took the mark - it's finally happening. Then it got ripped from us over the course of the next seven days.

Since then we've never won 13 games in a season (2020 was a 13-9 pace in 22 game parlance but we played 17) and never played in a prelim (between 2000 and 2009 every club played in at least one prelim).

So a supporter base raised on two truths (we've won one flag, and the cycle is swift) now can't hang it's hat on the one truth that contained hope - the speed of the cycle. Because it's been a flat line for a decade.

I can understand the sentiments detailed above. I can't do it, although I regularly do my head in at games in front of my three children, which I really prefer I didn't. But I'd never forgive myself if I stepped back and it finally happened without me making the effort I've made for the last 23 seasons. So I'll keep the same Level 2 seats and driving 90 minutes each way and organising my weekends March-August around who we are playing and where.

But I don't begrudge someone stepping back for their own sanity.
Yep we are the Ground Hog Day team

My mate and I have a StKilda labeled Spumante that I flogged from the soical club in the early 80's. We've always said that we'll open it if we ever win a flag. It's been in the fridge a few times, 97, 09 and 10, but sadly gets put back in the cupboard afterwards.
It will probably kill us if we do ever drink it.

This s**t club.
Ha ha,I have a slab of Foster's in my shed from when we were Gunna beat the crows
The cardboard has died since then ,but all 24 stubbies are still untouched

Just having a look into JDG and what he might bring as a goal kicking option.

Last year he kicked 23 goals in 20 games. One of those games he was subbed off early so 23 in 19.
He kicked 2 or more goals on 5 occasions. The total from those 5 games was 16 goals.
That means from the remaining 14 games he only kicked 7 goals and was goalless in 7 games.

Ok, but the Pies sucked last year. How about the top 4 Pies of 2022?

De Goey has 15 goals in 16 games.
He kicked 2+ goals in 3 games only. The total of those 3 games was 8 goals.
That means from the remaining 13 games he kicked only 7 goals. He was goalless in 6 games.

On the surface I was alright with getting JDG in as a match winner but he's absolutely not worth the money that's been spoken about. It'd be insane to pay him 800k+ for 5+ years.

Would rather grab someone like Sexton from the Suns if we want another senior body in the front half. Maybe even ask the question about Ollie Henry from the Pies who might be gettable given he was sub or out of the team in the back half of the year and now they are also bringing in Bobby Hill he's only going to drop in the order.

Henry kicked 21 goals from 13 games.
He kicked 2 or more goals in 7 games. The total from those 7 games was 17 goals.
This means from the remaining 6 games he kicked 4 goals. He was goalless only twice.
I’m not expecting degoey to put the team on his back and single handed win games.

What he is good at is a point of difference to our one paced midfield.
Able to break the line when the oppo has heavy numbers around the ball.

He’d fit into our midfield like the last peice of a puzzle.

As for Henry he’s a nice player but small forwards are not a need right now.
And sexton is a spud who would have been delisted by lost teams.

JDG only goes thru the midfield on occasions

He is no Petracca and by my reckoning compares more with a Hamill or a Zurhaar

Henry ain't a small forward either at 189cm and can take a strong grab and knows where the goals are and has 10 years ahead of him

Sorry that’s incorrect.
Degoey goes at around 80% CBA
Most at Collingwood.

Btw petracca was at the same rate, but since brayshaw signed his contract he has moved back into the midfield and trac is only doing less than 50% CBA

And 189cm is small these days, it’s not the 70s

I think you are a long way off the mark with your assessment on what role DeGoey plays

Is he as good as Petracca? Definitely not But they play very similar roles

He doesn't just go into the midfield on occasions

Centre bounces attended in his last 5 matches are 23, 24, 20, 12, 19

Compare that to Zuhaar 0 centre bounces attended in 5 games

Petracca 10, 11, 21, 12, 29

189 is not a small forward
Tim Membrey is a small forward

So 80% CBA and he is barely averaging 20 disposals a game and this year less than 1 goal a game

But hey here is 800k a year

He's playing more on ball these days. Nearly identical stats to Gresham and a similar amount of on ball time.
